Yeah - I know I am not a moderator, but I have an interest in this because I am still on dial-up. I noticed that the contest's rules have changed since they started. It used to be a limit of 100k for photos and now it's 200k. But people are posting images over 500k which is unnecessary. It would really make it easier for people like me if everyone would just follow the rules. I have kept all my pics under 100k.

Thanks,
Stefan

Stefan, there are two ways on posting images on the forum.
1) Making attachements, that is this page will host the pics you're uploading, the condition being the filesize limit of 100k or 200k.
2) By adding a link to your photo at your site, this way the file size does not matter, could be even 5 MBytes.

When I "Save for Web", I adjust the Quality slider till the filesize is what I'm after (which is normally <100K or <200K).

For the contests, if the output at 100K looks good, then I'll go for that and use a forum attachment. Other times (as with content #13's image), the IQ is too poor with a filesize of 100K, so I save the file at 200K instead, and link from my site.

I haven't so far found the need to go >200K with an image 800x<=800px in size. ;)

Well, true... but not quite specific to this topic. IIRC, the rules for the contest on this particular forum ask the files be limited to 200K, regardless of whether they are an attachment or a linked file. And although linked files don't tax the forum servers, they are still agony for a dial-up user to download. As a recent user of dial-up, I can sympathize with Stefan. I wouldn't even bother viewing images here if I were still on my old ISP.

An aside/recommendation: if your ISP offers a "slow" DSL connection -- typically around 756 kbs -- for a very modest cost, go for it. When Verizon offered that in my area, I jumped on it. It was only $5 more than my dial-up ISP service, offered a few nice extras, and is more than adequate for web browsing and image/software downloads. I wouldn't want to try downloading a movie or something else really huge, but photos and short audio and video clips come in very fast.

What he said ^.
Basically the file size limit is there for people who are not blessed with a lighting fast connection that can handle downloading all the photos.
