Yes it was a good game, first half was tied 10-10 but in the end the Wasps won, dont know the score because the heavens opened up and I had enough for what I needed and if you dont get out of the Twickenham ground quick, they stop cars leaving for 45 mins to let the walking public thru :-(
You cant get pitch side without a pass and a bib, at Twickenham they are really strict and wont let you move from your pitch once the game has started. You are correct, I am sat pitch side, working for a paper. Did not pay to get it, was paid to be there.
I have to say the R.F.U and Powergen really put on a good spred for photogs - in our room, hot and cold drinks, soup, rolls, wrap's sandwiches. Wireless Networking, powerpoints for laptops etc.
here are a few more

David,
I was at the game as well, but my seats were not nearly as good as yours! ha ha
As I am still learning and have an interest in rugby can tell me what settings you used on your camera, AV or TV or fully Manual?, ISO etc
Also what lens did you use?
Thanks in advance,

Beatiful shots!
Is this more popular than the tri cup or similar or what is it, five nations? I have just been learning rugby by watching on TV here and we get so little of it....LOL

Great photos. Couldn't agree more--Rugby is a great sport photograph! Wish we had as much rugby over here.
I'm planning on making the local club's match this Sat. I shot of couple of matches last fall and it was a great time w/ some nice photos to boot!
Good shootin',
Mark

Katzy, I shot all these in manual mode. I took a reading off the grass to get my mid tone settings, stopped down 1/3 of a stop and used that. I had to keep checking it every 5 mins or so because the light was failing. The shots are a mix of both ISO 1000 and 1600 most were shot at about F5.6 or 6.7 I was shooting at 500th sec to freeze action. The body was 1DMKII and all these were taken using the Sigma 120-300mm
Superdiver.
I have no idea, this was my first ever rugby game. I have seen a few on TV but mainly soot football over here. I really enjoyed it and am going to try to get some more rugby work.
That being said, I found it a LOT harder to shoot than a football match and to get pictures that told some sort of story, not just a mass of bodies.

Dave,
Thanks for the info, will give it a go!
Superdiver,
The game was a cup final between club teams across England and Wales. The other comp you mentioned is called 6 nations and is a northern hemisphere comp. That is international rugby between England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland, Italy and France.
There is another comp in the southern hemisphere call the tri-nations, and that is between Australia, South Africa and New Zealand.
Hope that helps,
Katzy

Starting to make more sense now...LOL
Do the winners of the two hemispheres ever play each other for a true world title?

Nice shots! You weren't allowed to move up and down the sidelines for the match at all? I'm used to a decent amount of freedom when shooting the Guiness Premiership.

great shots - especially for your first ever game of rugby. also very good for being stuck in a single spot in your first game. i enjoy running up and down the sidelines during kid's games (to make sure i get photos of as many of the kids on the team i'm taking as possible) and to get a good idea of the opportunities from anywhere on the field. if i'm shooting the A grade games, i tend to stay in one or two spots. shooting junior rugby league is far easier than shooting junior rugby (union)- because the kids learn rules and positional play far earlier. but i greatly enjoy shooting (and watching) a good game of rugby (union).

You lucky bastard!
How much do tickets to an event like that cost? A pretty penny, I would bet!

superdiver,
the tickets are not cheap! at this stage they have city packs (follow a venue) or team packs (follow a team) and get a ticket to all the games your team plays or the all the games at a venue. It about 400 pounds for 1 ticket for me to see all my team's group games!
that's want happens when sport becomes a business
