I just bought a PowerShot S50 and am still reading the (very long!) manual. I haven't found a reference yet to this troublesome feature:
Everytime I take a photograph, regardless of whether it's on Automatic or another mode, I get a one-second delay in the shutter. I was shooting a gymnastics camp yesterday and kept getting kids as they landed instead of while they were flipping or twirling or cartwheeling. It's very frustrating.

What can I do to alleviate this?

Welcome to the world of digital photography!

You can press the shutter button down half way to set the focus before you want to take the picture, then press it down the rest of the way when the shot is right.

You can also set your camera to continuous shooting mode.

Lastly, you can use hyperfocus. It might be helpful if you read the following acticle on setting hyperfocus on a PowerShot G3. I wish it was a little more specific for your cam, but it may help. http://www.marcjutras.com/ehyperfocal.html

don't forget good old exposure lock and focus lock, they will cure the problem I think... look them up in the manual then experiment with it, you should notice a huge difference
