Has anyone tried the course offered by NYI? I'm new to photography and I thought it might be a good idea to learn the basics. I got a brochure from NYI detailing the course that they offer but I'm not sure if it's worth the money. It is reaaly worth it? Thanks.

Reyno,
I am a student now. I have found it very informative and worth the money. If you want to check out more info about the school and the students there check out this website/forum:

I know that there are several topics about NYIP floating around the forum - try doing a search. Don't sign up right away - usually they send a coupon for more off the class about 1 month after they send the original materials.

I was ready to sign up, but it's been put on hold for wedding planning.

Reyno ,I graduated from NYIP a few years ago, and the things they teach you is awsome, spending the money is well worth it.

There are 2 courses at NYIP: Digital and Photography Pro.

I assume that everyone is talking about the Photography Pro. I too am debating on which course(s) to take / books to read. Does anyone have the syllabus for the Photography Pro course?

Thanks,

Chris

They don't have traditional syllabus, but if you go to this site you can read about the objectives for each unit.

Also, Don't let the name(s) fool you. In my opionion the digital course is more of a photoshop course, everything in the pro course can be used on digital photography.

I looked over some of the material...seems incredibly outdated...they don't even mention digital cameras!

It's a mail-order course kinda. You mail the assignments back and forth but they also give you a recording of them discussing your work.

Yes, the material seems outdated. They are starting mention digital equipment on the lectures. Between the obivious differences of film and digital the techniques to capture the shots are the same. You just need to understand the settings of your camera.
The only thing I would truly say is outdated is the lecture format, they are currently on cassette tape.
