IS Panning

I am getting an S3 and the IS has 3 settings.

Continuous
Shoot Only
Panning

I have read that "Shoot Only" is best to use, but I often
shoot aircraft landing and taking off so I always pan them.

Since Panning compensates for up and down motion, it must
be in addition to Continuous or Shoot Only function - or is it?
It seems confusing to me.
Can it be set to "Shoot Only" AND "Panning"?

"Panning" setting tries to correct for up/down jittery motion only. If you are panning the camera, you don't want the IS fighting your motion; hence you should use that option for getting your aircraft shots. Don't see how you can use shoot + pan for IS. Use "shoot only" for things that are static... or turn IS off completely if you are comfortable without it.

Yes, that's right - no Panning & Shoot Only at the same time. Found a knowledgable Canon Cust. Serv. rep. He said when in the Panning mode it is also Continuous. I guess I'll have to change it whenever I go to and leave PDX - almost every day.
