View Full Version : Eye Controlled Focus--WHEN?

Hi,

I wonder if ECF (Eye Controlled Focus) will be offered in the next EOS Digital. What makes the Elan E series so delightful is the ECF feature.
While I am tempted to buy the soon-to-be-released EOS Rebel Digital, something tells me that if I wait till next year, the next EOS Prosumer Digital will have ECF like the Elans or the EOS 3. Well, maybe just 7 point focus and not the more advanced EOS 3 kind, anyhow.
Anyone know whether having a CMOS or other sensor instead of film affects implementation of eye-controlled focus? One other thing that I would badly want in an EOS digital is to allow the infra red light of the 420EX to be used in all focus points, eye controlled.

Raja:
Me too wants a ECF digital EOS (I use it everytime in the EOS 5) but I'll buy now a 300D instead of wait for a probable prosumer EFC digital EOS next year, because probably that camera (if really exist) will be more expensive than the 300D, and more possible a 10D followup, and also I want to enjoy the DSLR benefits now and not in a year :)

I hope never. It is a useless toy designed for the family snap photographer. Maybe on something cheap like the 300D, but the pro and semi-pro market has no use for it.

That is a little harsh IMO. I have been a pro news photograher for 20 years and I find it useful from time to time. Everyone works differently. The more tools the better as long as I can decide when to use them

And a little selfish of KennyG, too. Just cuz he doesn't want it, he hopes nobody else can have it too?

Thanks for your input kennyG, however I have to disagree with you, I found it a useful tool on the EOS 5's and 3's that I have owned. When set correctly it worked without a problem and was an excellent tool. I was hoping to see it on a digital body but i'm not holding my breath.

Best Regards

I've not had the opportunity to try it,. bt if I ever get an Elan (the "Film" version of the 10D) I will get the Elan 7 E so I can have the option of EC.

I played with an EOS 3 for a while, and after I had trained it to my eye I had so much fun photographing wildlife. It gave me the time to concentrate on composition and not worry about the AI Servo slipping the focus out because the subjet had slipped away from the focus area.
It is a very good tool, but you have to use it before you realise that.

I love the ECF on my Elan 7E ... wish Canon would bring that technology over to the Digital world ... I can see no technical reason why not ... ?? must be a marketing thing ?

Canojn seems to be very carefull about which goodies to include where,. Imagine the $2500.00 D30 with only 3 focus points while some of the cheap a$$ rebels had 7???

The more goodies they hold back,. the more they can use to tempt us to buy the next model.... which WILL have EC!
