The 28 is usually usable at f/1.8 on a 1.6x crop. It is better at wide open on FF. :)

The 28mm f1.8 is soft at f1.8 if I read this review :

http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EF-28mm-f-1.8-USM-Lens-Review.aspx

Thank you.

I guess it's normal then. I checked my friend's Sigma 30mm and the result is not better than this at 1.8.

Use a tripod, flash and shoot at max sync speed. At 1/40s it could be a little camera shake. I mean if you're going to measurebate, do it right ;) :D .

Yeah I know, I didn't do it right.
I used a tripod however. I'll try this again at sync speed.

Thanks!

Really loving my 28 more the more I use it. I was wandering with the 28, 85 1.8 and 70-200 IS recently and it was the 28s that came back spot on time and again. Nice, nice lens and underrated I think.

I love this lens. Partially switched to canon because of it.

Haven't had the chance to shoot anything too fun yet, but these were made possible by a fast wide angle prime:

Agree with you, westoe.

I ended up returning my 28mm and going with the Sigma 30mm. I just couldn't live with the softness of my 28mm copy and there is only so much editing that can be done. The Canon 28mm had a slightly quieter focusing motor but my Sigma 30mm copy is an absolute razor sharp lens and quite usable all the way down to 1.4.

I should have gone with the 30mm right off the bat but I listened to the internet and all the Sigma hate. Even if the lens does give me fits later on I'll just use my warranty, that's what it's for... and here in Canada Sigma lenses are backed by a 10 year warranty.

Greetings! I have the EF-S 17-55 2.8 which I've been using on my 50D as my walk-around lens for over two years now. I love it, but I've noticed I tend to shoot a lot on the 24-35mm range, so I've been contemplating purchasing a prime in this range.

Would the EF 28mm 1.8 be worth the cash over just continuing to use the 17-55 2.8? I think my other option is to save up more money and get the 24 1.4L.

My main "wants" are usable/sharp photos at f/2 and smaller, fast/quiet/accurate AF, and maybe something less bulky than the 17-55 2.8.

It's a good choice for your wants. Very good at f/2, fast/quiet/(and very) accurate AF and very small and unobtrusive - even with the hood. Regarding the hood, I have a third party hood (that I never remove form the "ready" position) and it is excellent.

Good luck with your decision. :)

For me, I use this lens as my main 'indoor lens' - meaning I keep it on my camera just about the entire time. It is for whatever may arise and I know my camera is always ready for a quick shot indoors. It is wide enough, fast enough for whatever may happen at a moment's notice.

If I specifically want to do close-ups, I change to my 50 or 85. Outdoors I usually have the 15mm-85mm as my "whatever may happen lens". But I find the 28mm just right for 'snap shots' at family gatherings, parties, grandkids running through the house. I have used it for over a year.

Kind of what's been said already - I tried to avoid using it at it's widest and I've got some odd "bokeh" in some circumstances -probably more due to odd lighting, but I've been impressed with it on the whole - it's ideal for indoor work as has been mentioned... for the money and providing it's not your only lens I reckon it's a pretty good bit of kit!

Not a huge fan of layer styles, but the framing in that shot is off the charts.

I am looking for a fast lens, around normal focal length on a crop camera, to use indoors in low light for taking pictures of family. I know flash works, but there are times I would prefer to not use a flash. After reading some reviews online I got a bad feeling about this lens, but after seeing pictures taken with this lens it looks like a great option.

I used this lens 90% of the time indoors with my T1i, absolutely love it. Sharp, fast, fantastic. However, I have yet to adapt with it to my 5D MkII, it just seems too wide. But for a crop - it is excellent.

^ and I feel somewhat differently. 35mm on my crop just wasn't doing it for me, I love the 28 1.8 on my 5d2. So focal length is a personal thing, but I think this is a great lens for the money - especially on FF because there really aren't other options in this price/size range.

I made the hard decision of basically getting rid of mine once I picked up the 24-70L. It'll probably pop up on this site soon.

Great lens though. I'm sure I'll miss it.

I put it up for sale and then had a change of heart. For now, I will keep it, and down the road, if I find I am not using it at all, I will sell it.

Know what you mean about missing it and what great lens it is. Guess that is why I changed my mind

I'm looking for a wide prime and couldn't decide on the 28 1.8 or the 24 2.8 so I rented them from LensRental I ended up liking and taking more pics with the 28. The 24 was wider naturally, but the 28 is built better and I got better shot with it. Now if I can find a good deal on one I'll be joing the club lol

They are more alike than they are different. The 30 offers 2/3 stop faster aperture while the 28 has a closer minimum focus distance and slightly better AF. Either lens will serve you well I imagine.

I've owned this lens before, twice in fact, and liked it a lot both times. I'm thinking about getting another one as I just got a 24-70L again and I forgot how to use zooms ;).

I also forgot how humongous and hefty the darn thing is, I miss the simplicity of primes.

Only thing I'm wondering.... I've already got a 35L, once I sell the brick I was going to get a 50 again, but I want to also try the 20 2.8 for something new. Would there still be room in my life for a 28? 20/28/35/50/135 sounds like a lot of fun, but also a lot of lenses.

Mine is only around 1.8 or 2.0 that it definitely puts out some CA. But even at that, it's a livable amount and can be mostly corrected in post.

Good to hear. The 2/3 stop loss hurts if this lens replaces my Sigma, but the AF reliability balances out the loss. I can deal with some CA but if its noticeable to an untrained eye, then I might be disappointed. I don't really have any other options though, since the L lens lose the portability factor.

agphotography
3rd of May 2012 (Thu), 13:06
In my opinion and experience, all of the fast non-L primes exhibit some CA when shot with large apertures in situations that would exaggerate the effect (tree branches against the sky, specular highlights, anything chrome, etc. etc.) but I rarely found that it ruined an image. I mean, sure if you go looking for CA, you'll probably find it, but if you can't see it at print size, why look?

I really enjoy the L primes, but if I had to, I suppose I'd be ok with giving up my 35L for a 28 1.8, it's a perfectly decent lens, and with today's amazing RAW processing, you can really push the envelope.

A lens' bokeh is a very subjective thing, far from a universal acceptance. I think honestly people get TOO hung up on how a lens renders OOF areas. I mean, don't get me wrong, I appreciate a smooth graduation from what's in focus to out of focus, but I've never set out to buy a lens because of how it renders bokeh. The internet has fueled this fire with fake words like "Bokehlicious" floating around and the obscene quantity of youtube videos trying to showcase a lens' bokeh abilities or "bokeh balls".

Honestly, if a lens is a focal length and speed that would compliment your shooting style and has good center sharpness, almost nothing else matters in the end. (Unless you're an Architecture or Landscape photographer, then you honestly do care about extreme corner sharpness, but they mostly live from f/5.6 onwards)

Just sayin'

The reason I don't like pentagon and very harsh "bokeh balls" is because it reminds me that I'm viewing a photograph.

Smooth, round and pleasant bokeh helps the artistic communication -

It's like a musical recording that has distortion or digital clipping on it that shouldn't have it there... Takes you out of the moment.

Those pictures look awesome!! Thanks for posting.

thatkatmat

I certainly understand, but don't agree, too smooth, too "pleasant", is boring and not very artistic to me...lol, it's like music that's been worked over too much in the studio, sometimes I just want a raw garage sound....
I have all sorts of glass that produces all sorts of bokeh....I do this on purpose, so I can get many different looks.
But, if you're like me, your taste changes over time, who knows, 5 years from now, we both might have a whole different view of what beautiful bokeh is....
Thanks for the compliment, I just got the 50D yesterday and the 28/1.8 a couple days before that....Cheers!

But as far as the viewpoint - yeah - I'm on a "smoother and cleaner is better" kick right now, HAH!

And distortion does play a part in music as well, :)

To each his own!

But shame on you for posting those pictures and making me want to spend more money I don't have (just spent the last pennies out of my piggy-bank on a Canon 85mm f/1.8) :(

agphotography

I've been finding lately that the lenses which catch a bad rep on forums are actually perfectly good lenses in the real world.

For example, the 28 1.8 doesn't always get glowing reviews, but in the multiple copies I have owned, I have yet to be disappointed in them (except at extreme ISOs, for whatever reason it gets a little weak there). Another perfect example is the EF 20mm, for whatever reason people rip on this lens like there's no tomorrow when in fact it's actually quite sharp and the vignetting or CA it may display are painlessly corrected with today's amazing RAW software.

This is just to say that, while I love my L lenses that I have left, I wouldn't be the least bit afraid to give them up in favor of lenses such as these if the need arises. Use what you've got my friends, that's all I can say, make the most of the equipment you have, and if there is a true need that cannot be met by altering your shooting style, then you know it's time to add a new lens.

thatkatmat
20th of May 2012 (Sun), 22:05
Simplistic:, It's nice you have an open mind, if you want smoother bokeh than this 28mm, the 30mm Sigma is a great choice, but it's lacking Canon USM and it's an EF-S, both of which overide the f/1.4 of the Sigma (to me).

agphotography....I tend to agree with you, while I haven't ever shot the 20mm/2.8 if I needed 20mm, I wouldn't hesitate grabbing one. I've never been let down by an OEM prime. The hype, or lack thereof of any lens on these forums is always exaggerated, usually by newbies who judge all lenses at the 100% zoomed level. But, I understand, I was once a newbie too, easy to get caught up in the minute details that really don't mean much....

mannetti21
20th of May 2012 (Sun), 22:47
I've tried 3 copies of the Sigma 30 with no luck...my first 4-5 photos with this lens has convinced me that it's far more useful than the Sigma. The autofocus is leaps and bounds better...for that, I can give up the f/1.4 as it makes no difference if the Sigma only hits 50% of the time.

And FWIW, my copy is very, very sharp at 1.8...I'll easily be able to make large prints wide open.

Manetti21, while I haven't had the bad luck with the 30mm that you have, I do agree that the Canon 28/1.8 USM smokes the Sigma 30 HSM and yes, my 28/1.8 starts out nice and sharp, very useable ( I shoot wide open without hesitation), with none of the halo effect that the 30 gives....It's a good, solid little lens and a strong performer....that's why I bought another one :)

Simplistic, I wasn't directing the newbie comment at you, it was a general observation and like I said, I used to do it too...

Being new to photography doesn't matter. What I was saying is a global statement directed towards anyone with an interest in photography.

The key is to NOT get caught up in gear hype. Not to worry about the latest and greatest this or that. The absolutely BEST thing you can do for yourself in your "photographic infancy" is to learn everything there is to know about the lenses and equipment you already have. Find their strengths and weaknesses, find WHY you like a certain focal length, and how it improves your images. From there you will know what you will actually NEED to purchase in the future.

I can say this because I was one of the worst offenders of gear hoarding and camera lust. I was convinced I needed to have every possible focal length combination and I just had so much STUFF I couldn't concentrate on my photography. When photography becomes more about the gear than the images you create then there is clearly a problem.

It took me a long time to break away from those habits, and I have been trying to spread this information as much as possible to spare people from the kind of hassles I have put myself through agonizing over gear.

All that being said, Simplistic, yes the 28 would pair very well with the 85 and 10-22. That would be a very useful trio on a 1.6x body.
