I find best use for parties and indoor group shots.

Definitely! I'd say the best uses for the 28 1.8 is either for indoor shots on a crop (it has really saved a lot of shots for the past six months) or as a wide-angle street lens on FF. Outdoors I'm usually more inclined to use the 50, but that's because I favor a tight composition.

Can anyone tell me how this works for indoor portrait close ups on a cropped body? Too much distortion?

brandon9585
10th of April 2009 (Fri), 19:30
I haven't any trouble with distortion on mine indoors, but you need to be pretty close for close ups. A 50mm would probably be better for that. This lens is better for group shots I think.

Well, sometimes I take pictures of my son on my lap or right in front of me. Don't want his features distorted....... Love my 35 2.0 but sometimes feel as if it is too tight and usm would be nice.

first day i had my 5D :)
i loved the lens.. but found it too wide for what i do (mainly portraits)
a 35 F2 would be better, or even a 35L

I never take the hood off. It protects against bumps and flare.

Always use the hood!;) And take off the UV. It can induce and exacerbate flare and mess with bokeh.

Thanks. I really really really like the lens, but in the year that I've had it, I find that I barely use it. I've basically shot an indoor pottery studio gathering a few times, and a few karate events. Other than that, it normally just sits in the bag.

Another 1.8 shot, taking the emphasis of the cars :)

I have gone through all 22 pages of this thread and I now feel confident that I will enjoy shooting with this lens on my 5DmkII (and subsequently the 40D I'll be getting soon)

I've heard enough mixed reviews on this thing to make my head spin, but I'm glad to finally see some actual IMAGES to prove it's capable of solid results.

I'll have a fun little low light kit when i get it, 28 f/1.8, 50 f/1.4, 85 f/1.8
Ought to be a good time :)

Thanks everyone!

Yep.. it's a very nice lens and gives me exactly what I want from it in term of bokeh, speed and sharpness. I thought it would be soft like hell after owing a 200mm 2.8L II and as everyone was saying ''not usable until F4'' but... out of the box, at 1.8 I got sharp shots. I like the size to.

i got mine used a few days ago and i'm pretty disappointed...clearly it must be a pretty bad copy cause i don't think that the lens really is that awful. it has a terrible backfocus at close distance and it's very soft wide open. and even stopped down to f8 it has a huge amount of chromatic abberations. sharpness-wise (even stopped down) it doesn't even come close to my 50/1.4.

right now i'm thinking about reselling it or getting it serviced...

Well first thing, this lens sharper aperture is around F2.8 and F4, at 1.8 it's sharp enough to.. (well my copy)

it does suffer a lil bit of CA just like my 85mm 1.8 from 1.8 to 2.8,

of course if you pixel-peep you'll see that it's not as sharp as a L lenses but still sharp enough.

Well first thing, this lens sharper aperture is around F2.8 and F4, at 1.8 it's sharp enough to.. (well my copy)

well, mine's not even really that sharp between f/2.8 and f/8

it does suffer a lil bit of CA just like my 85mm 1.8 from 1.8 to 2.8,

and again, it has CA even at f/8

i'm pixel-peeping, yeah, but i'm not comparing it to expensive L lenses, but to my 50/1.4 which is cheaper than the 28...
and at f/8 i was expecting the same image-quality (at least in the image center), but it's not the case.

but the worst thing is the focus. whereas my 50/1.4 hits almost 90% of the time, even wide-open, the 28mm MISSES about 80-90% of the time. just like my old 50/1.8, which i hated...

No way your lens works properly. That's probably the strongest quality of it, the accurate focus. When it works, it is as good as any other top of the line lens (AF). Get it fixed. And also, the lens can be sharp. Not wide open but when stopped down slighly, it is very very sharp (f/2.2) ...

That is some great separation from background! Look at the the right side of her face (technically her left side) and how stark it is against the background. Not sure if this is a characteristic of this particular lens, but it is cool none-the-less.

Mike - you may also want to consider the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 - fStopJojo swears by it.

I have researched that lens as well. On paper it is ideal - f1.4 and closest to the magic 50/1.6 focal length. The trouble is - for every photographer who swears by it there are are two who swear at it! It really puts you off to hear of guys sending their lenses back - often more than once - and still not getting a good copy.

I swear by by Sigma 30mm 1.4 - I use it at weddings all the time. It's ideal for wedding reception venues and the like, where you're at ISO1600-ISO3200 and wide-open. :)

hello all...i recently got a 28mm 1.8 and a little disappointed with the quality. at least when i shoot and focus center..it doesnt really focus on what i want, but when i do manual its fine of course. i read a lot of mix feelings on this lens but thought i'd give it a try since i see nice photos, maybe my lens has potential? also the purple fringing is a problem...how do you usually avoid that on this? is it typical for a wide angle to have fringing easier?

for focusing how can i test to see if my copy is good or not or if im supposed to be in some setting that im not.

thank you for any advise !

The USM on this lens is awesome. Something is definitely not right with your lens then. Easiest thing to do is take a ruler and put it under some bright light. Throw the camera on a tripod on an angle to the ruler. Lower the aperture of the lens to about 2.0 or so and focus on one notch on the ruler and see where the focus ends up in relation to the point you focused on. Heavy amounts of purple fringing is normal at lower apertures in harsh lighting conditions and is the only thing that I do not like about this lens. You'll have to correct it in post processing such as Photoshop.

hey brandon, thanks for the tip. i actually did that when i got back from work...used bob atkins' 45 degree chart? anyways i believe at 2.0 there is no problem with front/back focus...at least from the many test shots i did...but on 1.8 it seems its off...back focus to the 3 mm mark...but sometimes 2mm. i tried taking random shots with center on 1.8...everything is back focus...but on 2.0 it is pretty much on how i want...does that i mean i have to bring my lens in for tweaking? since i compared this to my 50 1.4 and at 1.4 its perfect... thanks again for your help...and to any others!

The chart is pretty much the same test. I usually stop the lens down to 2.2 and beyond to try to get the purple fringing a little bit more controlled and get the sharpness up. I never shoot at f/1.8. If you have a warranty on the lens, send it in if you're not happy with it. I sent the 50mm in twice and they had the work done pretty quick and sent it back overnight shipping.

Why so? As for my self, I think I've reach a state of mind where I know what I do shoot and how I do it so I know which range I need and how I use it.

Hope that makes any sense :)

Dunno. I'm used to my 17-55, and boy has it treated me well. The only down side to it is that it is huge and intrusive and some people get a little scared when I'm in their face! I'll use the 28 for a little longer and see how I can adjust. It's all about improving weaknesses right?

Mmmm I dunno, what do you mean?

What I like about prime is how free weight they are. I had a 17-40, 24-105 and a 70-200, now I use 28 / 135f2 / 2002.8II and I can fight them all in a small slingshot aw200!

don't be fooled by people trash talking it. Honestly the lens is great on a 5DII (especially for video!!!!) But it's also a lot of fun on the 1.6x bodies too, it becomes a 45mm, I haven't used that Fl in some time, but it's nice to have again :)

Fixed focal length lenses will really open your eyes to a new world in photography, zooms definitely have their place in the world, I'd be lying through my teeth if I said I never used mine. But primes force you to think about your composition, focal length, aperture, DOF, everything!

Personally I absolutely love and prefer to use primes because it's what I began with all those years ago. I like my zooms for sports and when I need the convenience. But when I'm street shooting, or I want to be low profile. there's nothing like a good set of primes!

I really like the 28/50/85 combo. sometimes I even bring the fisheye just for kicks!

ALaS
27th of July 2009 (Mon), 02:55
I just like the convenience, especially when shooting with lights set up. I guess it's the same with a prime you just move around more, but the lights can get in the way..

Improving weaknesses as in, I suck at using primes, so I'm going to try to better myself as a photographer. I wasn't saying that prime lenses are weak. They're actually kind of fun.

And, yes one of the reasons why I picked up the 28 was to reduce size and weight for every day go abouts.

I'm another who's is trying to decide. I want either the 24L or 35L or maybe the 28 1.8. I have used the 24L I and loved it, I can't afford the II. I had a copy of the 35L that I loved but sold due to health expenses. Now I have a bit of money for a new lens and I'm again not sure. I tried 2 copies of the 35 and both had focusing issues. I have a feeling the store got them back from other people and just stuck them back on the shelf instead of sending them to canon. And of course no one has the 24L I for sale. I'm looking for a used copy but I keep thinking of other things I could use the money for if I get the 28 instead.

What I need it for is indoor gigs and nice narrow DOF shots. I have a 24 2.8 which I love, but it's a tad slow at some gigs I shot this past weekend. The 50 was ok for it, but still too slow of shutter speeds for the FL.

Either way I would use the lens wide open often. I know some copies are sharp wide and some aren't just like any other lens. So how is the focusing in very low light. Think ISO 3200+ and shutter speeds around 6-20 tops.
