I bought it used and I'm amazed. So sharp even at 1.8. Far better than my (sold) 50 1.4.

Yeah it really is an under-rated lens! Everyone has bashed on it for so long, but now that I've tried it for myself I've no idea why I didn't get it before. It's a great lens!

It's great on a crop format. But on a FF I really preffer 50 1.4...

I've tried a lot of 50s, and I'm still on the hunt for the perfect one.

I was never all too happy with the Canon 50 f/1.4, I've owned 2 of them. The first was mediocre all around, the second was sharp but lacked character.

I had the 50L for a time, and it was actually really awesome, but it was so big it didn't easily fit in my camera bag so I found myself leaving it at home a lot.

Now I have the Sigma 50, and focusing issues aside I'm very happy with the quality.

I use the 28 on my 5DmkII all the time, it's actually very good on that camera. It's a great low-light kit for shooting events too. just wide enough.

Since most of you posters already have your 28mm, you have not noticed that both Amazon & Adorama are now taking back orders. Adorama has raised it price by $40. Either there is a shortage due to increased demand, or Canon has slowed production. ???

Anyways, I am not so patiently waiting for my shipment.

I'm actually quite surprised at the "overnight success" this lens is suddenly getting. It's long sat dormant probably stock-piled in camera stores and online. Now suddenly we're all clamoring to get one. Kinda funny if you ask me lol!

I would say this though, if you can pick one up for a good price, get it! It's great on both Full-Frame and 1.6x. I haven't tried it yet on a 1.3x body, but I presume I'd enjoy it just as well.

I gave up on the Amazon order and bought the last one at Abe's. I'm quite excited about its addition to my lenses because this prime will mimic the missing 'normal lens' that I did not have. All previously were slower zooms.

It really is a little gem. I absolutely love using it on my 5DmkII. I know it's not the sharpest of sharp lenses wide open, but it's absolutely more than usable, and with a little post production magic it can produce some killer results!

You'll be more than pleased with it on a XSi, I think it's fantastic on my 40D.

Don't be surprised if you hang on to it.

My favorite lens combo is 28/35/50. I don't have a 35 right now, But I expect to get another 35L someday.

Why get rid of it honestly? It's not terribly expensive, but I find it to be invaluable.

Well, it's only a question of 7 mm. Does sound a bit overfluous, especially when you could trade it and get, say, an 85mm.

I do believe that 7mm is a big difference, thats why im thinking about holding on to it, but im also thinking i should trade it for a 50 1.4...my 1.8 just isnt cutting it. And i have the 85 1.8 already or i defiantly would trade it for one.

I guess we shall see when my 35 gets in...

brandon9585

If you're going to trade it for a 50 1.4, get the Sigma. I haven't used the Sigma but I'm not a fan of my Canon at all. The build quality is below the 28, as well as hit or miss focus accuracy and speed. My friend's 50's USM just broke on his and it won't focus beyond about 5 feet, and of course it's out of warranty by a few months. I can't wait to sell mine.

mxracer535

Yah keep hearing about the USM failing on the canon 50. I also keep hearing about focusing issues with the sigma and how a lot need to be sent in or replaced, somethings multiple times...why is it so hard to make a good 50???

brandon9585
7th of September 2009 (Mon), 03:30
I don't know man. Even the 50L has problems. I would kill for a 50 1.4 MkII. I'm just going to trade it for the 60mm Macro in the meantime.

My EF 50 f/1.4 sucked so I sold it off along with other things and bought the 50L. That had great IQ but wonky AF problems. I sold that and now have the Sigma. It's wicked sharp but the focus was crap. It's on its second trip to sigma for calibration.

I feel that the lens is worth fighting for though. I know it potentially is spectacular.

My low light kit is slightly different from what I typically use but it's been fun. I'm sporting a 28/50/85 kit. Very different and interesting. If canon ever makes a 35 f/1.8 you can bet I'll be picking that up.

Well, well. Different strokes. Personally, I think they are close enough not to warrant both. I assume you'd think both a 24 and a 28 would be superfluous? I even think my 28 and 50 are bordering on being too close to eachother.

you would think 7mm would make a huge difference but i find the 28 and 35 to be really close. they do have a little bit of a different look - i feel like the 28 has more of PJ look - so there is reason to have both if you can afford it. strangely enough, i find there is a huge difference between 24 and 28, despite it being only 4mm. IMO the 28 is much closer to the 35 than the 24.

But if a lens is not getting used as it deserved, better to get something you would use.

Are you finding it too wide? Or just not as convenient as a zoom?

Not wide enough. And, for the amount of set up and tear down I have to do with my lights etc, I need/want/like the convenience of a zoom.

It's a nice sharp piece of glass, but I don't have room for all my strobes in my bag with it. Though, it is nice to carry around the town when I just want to bring a body + 1 lens with me. Lens of choice. Unfortunately, that's not that often, for me.

The deciding factor, however, is school. It's my priority, and I do need the dough for my books. So, it makes sense to me to sell it right now.

The reason I sold is was because I could get better results with my 17-55 f/2.8 IS. I had no need for the 28, it was simply experimental. It also wasn't really my style. I did, however, like the size of the lens, nice, small and discrete. Built very well. AF was moderately fast (faster than 50 f/1.8, on par with 85mm f/1.8), Low light hunt wasn't to bad... The lens overall was conveinent to have as far as options. it just wasn't a necesity. So, off it went. If I miss it, I'll get it again... I sold it for just as much as I purchased it for.

I honestly think it's a great lens for the money, nice and wide.

You just gotta know where it's strengths and weaknesses lie in, such as the softness wide open.

I'm torn between letting mine go for a 35L....but with the 35L it's tough to get the nice wide roundness at the sides that the 28mm is capable of. :D

Hey, thank you..

Yeah, mostly. Sometimes my girlfriend will hold a lightstand or a flash for me. I trigger it with the self timer..I really need to invest in a remote.

Do you have to run back and forth for each shot? Does it get misfocused a lot of times?

Sorry I have so many questions haha.

Hmm... I do like this lens, but it's quite expensive at almost $500. Makes the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 a bit more attractive. I would like to stick with canon but question first:

A lot of the reviews have complained about its performance wide open. Is this over exaggerated? Is it comparable to the nifty fifty?

I was about to say "Are you crazy? This lens isn't $500 new." Until I looked at B&H, it sure is! $499.99! Looks like that Canon price increase that took place on the 1st really jacked up the prices worse than I thought.

Damn. Should have bought those 580EXIIs earlier...

I also think the complaints about wide-open performance are exaggerated. It's not mind-blowing, but it's absolutely useable. my copy has a slight touch of CA, but I personally do a lot of B&W so it doesn't matter a whole lot.

I'm just gonna throw this out there as well...

I think that we ALL (myself included) spend too much time on forums evaluating lenses with test charts and batteries. We should be out actually shooting with these cameras and lenses that we buy, and also ENJOYING them :)

If you can get your hands on a clean used copy I think this lens is a great bargain and I'm very happy with it.

Picked up one of these today. I WAS going to get a 35L, but I thought to myself:

"I want a light lens (the 35L is pretty heavy for a prime) and I can't justify the 35L price for a 'every-day-lens'."

So I had mentally decided to get the 28 1.8. So I told myself I'd get one as soon as I saw it in a shop (not an easy lens to find).

So today, the same shop that had the 100mm 2.8L IS against the odds of my finding one (which I bought when I saw it a few days ago), also had the 28mm in it when I checked today. So I picked it up while it was still there.

Hope to post some samples soon. :)

(If I'm super honest... during my tests (to see which millimetre I'd use more - 35mm or 28mm) I quite often hit the 28mm mark over the 35mm mark naturally... so perhaps I was blinded by Love if you know what I mean. ;) )

Focal length being pretty subjective, I actually prefer 28mm on FF over 35mm (tested it with my 16-35). So often I picked 28mm without thinking.

I like the focal length (as I said about) and the part in focus looked pretty awesome (pity it wasn't what I was focusing on). ;)

I'm thinking this may be a good alternative to the 35L. Looks like the minimum focusing distance is slightly closer. I traded my 35L for a 24-70L because I missed the versatility, but it would still be fun to have a wide prime. This just might fit the bill.

Stealthy Ninja
15th of October 2009 (Thu), 04:00
^^ It's certainly CHEAPER by quite a bit (less than 1/2 the price).

For me, it's a light lens that won't be giving me back problems when I lug it around in my bag all the time. If I needed it for working or special occasions, I would have saved for the 35L. As it is, I think the 28 1.8 will be a nice enough alternative to the 35L.

I think the main differences are:
Build (also reliability... the L is less likely to be front/back-focusing...)
Aperture (1.8 vs 1.4)
Bokeh (related to the aperture)
Sharpness (the 28 seems pretty darn sharp...as I said, the parts that were in focus were sharp... darn back-focusing... but the 35L is sharper, especially when you stop the 35L down to 1.8... the 28 is wide open at 1.8, if you get what I mean)
Availability (for me at least, the 28 is MUCH harder to find than the 35L).

kandyredcoi
15th of October 2009 (Thu), 04:45
actually if i come up with some extra cash, i'd probably sell the 28/1.8 for a 35L, i was gonna use it mostly for cars and found it a bit too wide, plus the 1.4 should be awesome in low light conditions :D

Stealthy Ninja
15th of October 2009 (Thu), 04:55
Yeah, it depends on what you want it for. :)

I can get away using my 2.8 lens (16-35) for what I want. I just want something lighter. :)

I also like 28mm over 35 (that's just me).

kandyredcoi
15th of October 2009 (Thu), 05:11
^yea theres nothing mechanically or physically wrong with my 28/1.8 just thought its too wide for when i take pics of cars...thats all, might go up for sale as we speak along with my 50/1.4 to make room for a 35L

Maybe someday, I do miss my 35L, it was welded to my old 5D. I'm content though with my zoom trio, that's usually all I take with me when I'm space-limited.

To the dude(s) who want to photograph indoors, seriously if you want to shoot indoors regularly learn to use a flash properly. It will really help.

The only time I don't use flash indoors is when I'm not prepared (didn't bring the flash) or the ambient light looks nice (like candle light, or stage lighting). Otherwise flash nearly always looks better (and you get the little twinkle in people's eyes). You just have to know how to use it properly is all. ;)

Thanks. I agree. However in this case, it is the birthday party of a friend and pretty low key, so its an environment where the flash might be a little unnerving or annoying. Even the DSLR might be too much. Maybe LX3 will go, who knows.
