Anyone have thoughts on 28 1.8 vs. 17-55 for shooting some indoor casual afternoon/evening party shots with NO FLASH. IS vs. 1.8 aperture.
I find my 17-55 has a far better keeper rate with IS than my 28 @ 1.8 in low light with no flash at high ISO's. Seriously that's one of the reasons I sold the lens because it was obsolete for me. But, I do miss it's size and sometimes the bokeh. :[

Just joined the club! Looks like my 85 1.8 will be in the sell forum soon as I just don't use it that much with the 70-200.
My 50 1.4 is glued to my 5d but I think it will start sharing duties with this new bad boy!

I would hang on to the 85 if I were you. The combo you now own is the perfect light weight street shooting setup.
28 f/1.8, 50 f/1.4, 85 f/1.8
You could shoot just about anything with that. I have the same setup minus the canon 50, I have a sigma 50, but it's always in repair so I almost don't count it lol.

Great capture!
I love the composition and the expression of your subject.
I had this lens for about a year, a wonderful piece of glass. Brought it with me to Perth, loads of great images and memories captured with it. I upgraded to a 5dmk2, and eventually sold the 28mm and bought the 35L.
Still miss it a little, the size was just so perfect, so small and compact.
Perfect walkaround / street photography lens on a 1.6x cropper!

I'm trying to ignore all the 28mm bashing. Would you guys say the IQ is comparable to the nifty fifty? Since that lens is often said needed to be stopped down but I'm quite happy shooting with the nifty fifty wide open. Thoughts?

Well - the nifty is a superb lens from 2.5 I would say. This baby works perfectly from 2.0. On my copy 1.8 is a little soft but still VERY usable.

I really really wanted to shoot some car light trails, I never got the chance before, I was hoping to go to a bridge today to get some shots of cars on the motorway but my car has been hurt :( so I decided i'll stand in my drive and take some shots on my road, these are the few that I got.

I've had my 28mm sitting in exile for about 10 months. After buying it second hand, I hated it... because it could not make a sharp image, and the best it could do stopped down to f/8 had obvious purple fringing, in most any kind of light.
I bought a Sigma 30mm, which I have enjoyed. I could not figure out how to dispose of the Canon lens; I did not want to sell it like that, but didn't relish the thought of paying Canon's minimum service charge, which might have been half the value of the lens. I did harbor some hope that if I could try it on a new body with microadjust, things might improve.
Fast forward to my new 7d. Wow... doing the microadjust test shots, it was amazing how much even one tick would change the softness and purple tone. I wound up with a -4 adjustment, and a fantastic lens!
Here's a SOOC shot at f/3.5, at minimum focusing distance.

And, here are OOC crops of the 3/8 inch logo at f/1.8, and 2 stops down, at f/3.5. It's a different composition, since the image above was shot at an angle, which made the wide open logo shot look worse. (Even so, note that there's a bit of curve to the surface.)

Not bad, especially since shooting at MFD is a challenge for most lenses.
So, now, I'll have to decide which lens to keep. I'm leaning toward the Canon, which is pretty sharp at f/1.8, has the shorter MFD, and is smaller. The Sigma has a bit more contrast, the faster aperture, and is less prone to CA.
With all the tales of the 28mm being not sharp (and more broadly, all sorts of lenses with reported problems), I now wonder how many could have been "fixed" with a little microadjust.
Of course, there was nothing wrong with the lens. And, nothing wrong with the camera body. Both were made within manufacturing tolerances. If, for example, acceptable tolerance is + - 3 units, a lens that's +2 or 3 and a body that's +2 or 3 puts the combo out of whack. Adding microadjust to bodies was a brilliant stroke!
After mild processing...

This thread pushed me over the edge of buying a 28mm 1.8 :D
I tried a LOT of Sigma 30 1.4's in the store. In fact, 7 ones have let me down upon testing them. Lost my faith in the entire brand, because to me, consistence is everything.
Eitherway, I found a nice deal on a used one, from a fellow photographer who discovered that a wide-normal prime wasn't really his thing.
It's probably arriving tomorrow! very excited :D
I'm looking forward to comparing this to the Tokina 35mm macro, which is my favorite lens to use at the F5.6 / F8 range, but also amazing wide open (2.8)

Nice. Pretty shallow DOF for f/5. Gives it a look that makes the scale seem bigger. This close focusing it what's going to have me keep this lens over the Sigma 30mm.

i had this lens for awhile and loved it on 1.3. it was 'wide' enough 90% of the time for me. it was light and spot on. i was gonna hold on to it until i could upgrade to the 24L but found an awesome deal on a 16-35. so i sold the 28 to fund that. i miss this lens.

Okay, this of course is a personal preference, so I hope I don't upset anyone, but to me the colors of the SIGMA are far more vibrant and have more contrast. A lot of times, I don't even touch the colors, just correct the WB. The images are beautiful as is without PP. The colors of the 28 were kind of washed out and unexciting (and you can't always correct that in PP).
Another thing that I noticed right away when I had the 28 is that it doesn't handle strong light sources in the frame as well as the SIGMA. I'm not talking about flair. I'm talking about situations such as a sunset where one shoots against the sun - the SIGMA balances all areas very well, creates nice smooth transitions. And then the 28 blows the highlights beyond repair.
And then of course, both lenses cost about the same but the 28 (to me) is an f/2 lens where the SIGMA is sharp at f/1.4. I even had my 28 calibrated and it was still too soft for my taste at f/1.8. I always stopped it down.
About the reliability issues of the SIGMA, yes, it is true. The one I own is my fourth. But if/when you find one that works well, it is just as reliable as any of the other 3 lenses I own which are all well regarded CANONs.
This is just my take on things ...

One more thing - all lenses I own, I have acquired over a long period of time and are a result of a lot of trial and error. I've owned at least two dozen lenses and I always go for what I think is the best in class. If I have to sell all my lenses and own only one, it will be the SIGMA.

Ive been considering this lens lately just to have a light lens to work with at 28mm. But with a 17-35mmL and 28-80mmL Im having difficulty justifying it with 50mm and 85mm primes as well on hand... I just love primes enough to consider it.
Since I shoot 1 series the Sigma 30 is completely out. I have found with the MKIII that I have to desaturate many of my photos so it wont be too much of a disappointment to have shallower color to me.

Send it to Canon for calibration. Better than taking the beating on it for being crappy. Or sell it to someone willing to pay to have it calibrated at a loss.

There's no great solution, here. Paying for calibration, at non-warranty shop rate, will be nearly half the value of the lens. I had the same problem with my 28 and 40D. I put it in a closet for 10 months, until I did a body upgrade. Microadjusted, and the lens is great. I did feel a bit lucky that it was just a camera+lens alignment issue.

50D does have microadjust. As to whether it's worth it for you, I can't say.
And, these, at f/1.8, which have been lightly processed; I did nothing to hide the purple fringing that's starting to creep in there.
