I have to admit, this lens is soft wide open and CA is quite bad controlled. If you take photos for the web resolution (like samples here), it doesn't matter because it won't be noticeable (and people will LOVE your photos because of nice DoF and bokeh), but I don't recommend this lens, if you want to print your photos (A4 or bigger) and/or do some cropping of the original picture.

I've recently visited our city center with my friends in Poland and covered it only with a 28 1.8. ...

Got this lens last week just before my weekend trip to Chicago. Took over 300 shots and was so very happy. The shots I took outside at night were just perfect. Will post a few after I finish editing and converting.
As a beginner, I am very pleased with the results of this lens with my T1i.

I think I am about to start a long and meaningful friendship with this lens.
I'm sure I will be able to find faults with it, but the FOV is right, the size is great, its f/1.8 is quite usable for my purposes and IT FREAKIN' FOCUSES.
I do actually have some duckies around here but as dinner is nigh I was drawn to the kitchen:

I got this lens less than two weeks ago, bought specifically to use on a weekend trip to Chicago, wanted something wide enough, able to handle low light and light enough to carry all weekend - it did not disappoint. I love this lens!

Michgirl, I like that first one. Was that with the 270EX? What are the settings for those two? I can't get EXIFs.
I did not take the 270 with me, that was on-board flash shot in P with ISO 400, 1/80 @ f/1.8. The second was no flash, P again with 800 ISO 1/30 @ f/1.8. What I find amazing at this lens, even without IS, hand held shots are pretty sharp. When I first started shooting with DSLR, camera shake plagued me like crazy, even with IS.

19th of December 2010 (Sun), 11:28
Wow. In the first, you really dispel the notion that the pop-up flash is useless. B&W probably helped a lot, but I just love it for what it is. In the second, handheld at 1/30? Great job! That speaks for you, not the lens.
michgirl
19th of December 2010 (Sun), 11:35
Thanks! Here is the shot straight out of the camera, no adjustments at all - I do use the pop-up flash quite often and think it does a pretty good job.

Give it some time ... it is not a perfect lens, but once you get use to it you will change your mind. I was also disappointed originally and it took me more then 1 year to learn
to use it and get good results. I regularly print A4 shots @f/2.2 and they look great.

I'm having a hard time finding this lens in a local store! Want so much to physically compare it with the Sigma 30. .
AntonLargiader
22nd of December 2010 (Wed), 12:26
I had to order it. My local store wouldn't carry it, citing past complaints. However, I was just there and the guy said that after looking into it a bit more, it seems the complaints were about the 2.8, not the 1.8. So maybe it was just a cost issue; not a popular lens so not worth carrying in inventory.
FWIW they also wouldn't carry the Sigma.

How many of you are correcting CA before you post photos? At the beginning of this thread is a pretty bad example of CA (although I think it is a 100% crop). I like the idea of this lens but I don't want to have to CA-correct all of the photos.
I never correct the CA on this lens. My copy really doesn't seem to have bad CA problems.

fnothaft,
Thanks very, very much for including links to exif data, detailed info on pp, and original size images. I'd like to see more posts like yours in the sample photo archive.
Beautiful compositions there. IMO the first and third images do look a bit oversaturated in certain areas (the houses on 1 & 3 and the blues on the bottom half on 1). Maybe you can also enhance the colors of the background landscape in 1.

Not a problem! Glad to hear that it was useful, and I think I'll keep on doing such for photos that were extensively (or just interestingly) PPed. I keep on hearing something about me oversaturating photos... ;) I'm red-green colorblind, so I bump the saturation up to what looks vivid to me, but is way too vivid for anyone else. I'll probably go and bump saturation down a little bit on these photos. 1 might also make a really killer B&W.

I don't doubt that the Sigma is a great lens..... on your second, third, or even forth attempt at getting a good copy that focuses correctly.
For those that don't have a micro-adjust option on their body, the Sigma scared me too much to chance it.

I'll take some comparison shots tomorrow from a tripod wide open for bokeh. As far as Auto-focus, both are great, no complaints with Canon's USM

As far as Auto-focus, both are great, no complaints with Canon's USM
50mm 1.4 has micro USM, which is not the same as ringUSM. The auto focus is acceptable, but 28mm 1.8 is far better. Plus 50mm extends when focusing, which
slows it down a bit, 28mm has internal focusing, similar to 85mm 1.8.
As far as optical performance 50mm is better - sharper from f/1.8 to f/2.8 and similar form f/2.8 to f/8 with slight edge to 50mm again. I havenīt use them past f/8.
Actually that is something you can expect - it is not fair to compare fast wide angle to fast normal lens.
P.S. I am speaking about crop sensor here, canīt comment the optical performance on FF.

Focus speed is great, build quality seems good so far. I will notice slight CA (chromatic aberration) wide open in low light, but that's pixel peeping.
You definitely wouldn't regret an upgrade from the 2.8

IMO, if you're shooting at f8-11 then you might as well use your Tamron 17-50, it's the f/1.8-2.8 that makes this lens special - but thats just my opinion.

Thanks Guys.
So what kind of strap do I need to buy to use with the Utility Loops?
I looked up the website but can't seem to find a strap that ended with 2 hooks
Its the Op Tech uni-loop connectors (that can be used to attach to a wide variety of straps and slings)
http://optechusa.com/system-connectors/uni-loop.html
actually, looks like he's using the Op Tech Utility Loops
http://optechusa.com/system-connectors/utility-loop.html
The connectors look similar to the ones on my old OP/Tech strap, but I can see that they have now been changed: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/140198-REG/OP_TECH_USA_1001252_Classic_Strap_Black.html

Nice flare shot
IMO, if you're shooting at f8-11 then you might as well use your Tamron 17-50, it's the f/1.8-2.8 that makes this lens special - but thats just my opinion.
Thanks for the compliment. Whenever I get a new lens, I try to force myself to use it for a week or so to get a hang of it. See what it does well, see what it doesn't do well. I've been even more stubborn about this one because it reminds me of when I learned on film with only a 50mm. I suppose I'm challenging myself with composition and enjoying a bit of nostalgia.
In addition, I've started a 365 project and my default lens has been my 28mm because its my most compact setup. I'll throw the Tamron on if I know I'll be in daylight and/or need the wide angle.

Would you guy's say this lens is as sharp as the Canon 50mm f/1.8 II?
I have the 50mm on my 500D and love it's superb sharpness but in many situations the focal length is too long. I was thinking of either the 28mm f/1.8 or the 35mm f/2.

For sure! I have the 50 mm f/1.8 on my T1i also. And when the focal length became limiting, I got the 28 mm f/1.8. Love the pictures from it, it focuses faster than the 50 mm and the contrast is a bit more pleasing.

Yup: http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=455557. Seems to be a pretty decent lens also, but it does have some big drawbacks compared to the Canon: quite bulky and heavy, 77mm filters, annoying mf/af switch system (clutch and switch). It does seem to be sharp though, but I'd get their 24mm 1.8 over the sigma 28mm 1.8.
Most of the samples I've seen, focus more on the Sigma's ability to focus very close...

Just got this lens and here is one of my first test shots. I was more than impressed!
This is exactly what I got this lens for and that is shooting indoors under extremely low light situations.
I had small lamp off to the left and the light from the tv coming from behind me, that was it.
I was able to hand hold and take this photo with these settings. Gotta love that 1.8 :D
Exposure: 1/25 sec at f/1.8
IS0 1600
No Flash needed, available light only. :D
Highly Recommend this lens!!!
