Had no idea how easy this picture trick actually was until I sat down and did it....

(to add, I will be attempting this picture again, but with three different pictures, the first two with the same settings (background then background and laptop, then a third picture metering for the computer screen so I can use the menu bar at the top, and dock at the bottom of the screen)

the point is to get this effect without photoshop...not cuting out the screen on the layer with the computer and having the pic without the conmputer on layer under...but to make a desktop picture and frame it so it fits into the enviroment...

I see what you're talking about, although at 1/25s and slower I'd have to call this an unreliable test. Try it in good light (or use a flash if you have one) at shutter speeds of around 1/200s - 1/250s and tripod mounted. If you're having the same issue, I'd return it for a better one.
BTW, the 50mm f/1.4 (Canon) I had was sharp from wide open. I think you've been a little unlucky with those two lenses.

the 50mm f/1.4 is known to be a bit soft wide open.
These shots were taken with a tripod.

If those were taken with a tripod I'd say you have a bad copy or there's some other issue. I've shot wide open with mine numerous times and never seen anything as soft as those photos suggest. Even compared to your 2.8 shot.

maybe my copy is bad. it just seems ridiculous to me because the reviews I have read all indicate this is a really good lens.

My 28 1.8 on my 40D is able to focus fast and properly in near dark (talking candle-lit in a dark room here). Out of all my lenses it's by far the best focusing one, never stops to impress me.

I'm satisfied with the AF in low light, but that will of course also depend on your camera.
I've been a happy user of the 35 f/2 for a long time, but haven't compared them on sharpness, color etc. The USM focusing of the 28 f/1.8 is reason enough for me never to go back to the 35 f/2

I used the 28 1.8 for the first time on full frame (used 5D - before I got this I only used it on a 40D) this weekend and I have to say, it was spectacular. Having used only crop bodies before, the wide shallow DoF was really new to me and I'm just loving this style of images. It's really the perfect focal length for indoor full body portraits.
Now I just have to post process 1143 images, but I'll surely post a bunch in here :D

Just got this lens last week and am having fun with it. Enjoying learning how to use it.
Initial observations: yes it is a little soft wide open, but only at certain distances up close, it seems to be fine in center.
Focus speed is excellent, manual focus ring is perfectly dampened.
Build quality is very good, and looks good on my 50D.
Very nice lens for general walk around use. No complaints thus far. I am excited about exploring all the possibilities with this wide aperture.

Two from a wedding from two weeks ago. I just love shooting with with a shallow Depth Of Field. Left these relatively unprocessed, just some spot cleanup and the default raw settings.
Don't mind the weird poses in either shot by the way... We were goofing off after a long ceremony and taking the "mandatory shots". I always end up picking the goofy shots as my favorites though... Also gives a bit more connection to how the couple really is.

That is a very heavy crop, and even at that it's not that bad. In broad day light tough to get crisp detail without a little loss of detail due to CA. Im sure this lens would fare better than my Nifty ;)

Just curious how well this lens does on the 7D. I am thinking about picking one up. I find my 50mm 1.4 a little long inside. My 15-85 is great but a little slow in low light.

I used it on my 40D almost exclusively indoors - before I got a 5D. Now I use it on my 5D and it trades places occasionally with the 50 1.8. I still really love it as a normal lens on crop though. Focus is really snappy, and it focuses in near dark - way beyond what my eyes are capable to pick out.

Examples and/or settings used? Wide open it can be a little soft, especially around the edges, but certainly not bad enough that it's usually a major problem.

I always found my 28 1.8 to be sharper than expected. I'm wondering if sharpness depends on number of megapixels of the camera? I was using it on a 10mp XS. In the end I found I was only using 1 prime per outing, and the 50 1.4 beat it out.

Sigma has 2/3 stops more light gathering ability while the 28mm f/1.8 has killer AF, especially in low light. IQ is roughly the same between the two, although they have slightly different bokeh. The 28 has a much better MFD which, imo, makes it a more versatile lens. The 28 is FF compatible, the 30 is only for APS-C.

After much deliberation I decided to give this lens a shot on FF. Finally ordered it along with a few others. Looking forward to posting in here soon. I ordered the Pearstone lens hood for this lens from B&H... I hope it fits properly.

Just pulled the trigger on one of these from a fellow POTN member last night. It's coming equipped with the OEM hood and a clear Hoya Pro 1 filter. This will be my first prime lens so I'm pretty excited. I'm thinking it will spend a lot of time on my 40D with the battery grip pulled off as a walk around combo. Sometimes it's really hard to leave the 1D3 at home though :)

Ok, so my 28mm just arrived and I ripped out some test shots and F/1.8 and the shots are damn sharp. Either I got a miracle copy or negative rep this lens has is just flat out wrong. I was really iffy ordering this lens but boy am I glad I took the plunge.
The bokeh and sharpness at F/1.8 are pretty impressive for a wide angle lens on a FF camera imho. The MFD is so useful and awesome. The colours could be a bit better for a $520 lens but still pretty good. AF is blazing fast and accurate. Build quality for the money paid is acceptable. Overall Im pretty happy and will be keeping the lens for sure!!! Will post some test shots tomorrow.

Just got my 28 f1.8 in the mail today!!! Normally I'd use my trusty Miniature Beagle to help me with some test pictures but since she's at my in-laws with the rest of my family I had to make due with the wooden version ;)
28 f1.8 wide open on my 40D and PP'd in LR3:

How is that hood, I heard the aftermarket ones for the 28mm don't fit very well. I couldn't find one that fit, and even the Canon one took forever to find, it was out of stock all over
Here's one I took last night with my 28
