I am currently an apprentice for a master printer/researcher and was asked to do a down and dirty, impromptu product shoot of an all-in-one printer for a review. All I had in my bag was a 7d, 85mm f/1.8, 28mm f/1.8 and a 580exII. Well the 28mm, with its great MFD, was all I needed. :)

All SOOC, resized and sharpened for web:

http://img825.imageshack.us/img825/6316/uo5n7post.jpg

I took some photos with this excellent lens yesterday, must say I'm quite impressed. I'm thinking about getting it soon. I was thinking about the 24L but now I'm not sure if it's worth the extra money. The image quality produced by the 28 1.8 is really great.

Almost pure raw:

GAH! Great now im torn between this and the 35mm f/2

Anyone here make the decision between the two, or perhaps have used both and can provide some contrast to help me decide between them?

(I decided to start perusing the sample threads for both this and the 35mm f/2 and came out with a vastly different opinion of both lenses...Geez..)

(Oh and besides you Twoshadows ;) You've given me your opinion already...)

Do you need fast low light focusing? Then this is your lens. If you are looking for bang for buck and that doesn't matter go with the 35mm f2.

That is a good point and well, yes i would like good low light focusing lol...Why else would someone want an f/1.8 prime?

Kenji, trust me you won't regret getting this lens. i mulled a month over getting this lens and in the end i was like I should have trusted my gut and got it sooner. its a great lens for the money considering some of the negative rep its gotten over the years on the net.

Its plenty usable wide open and it has blazing fast AF that works in the lowest of lighting situations which is a fantastic since I bought a 28mm F/1.8 lens to use indoors on FF for the most part where a F/2.8 can't get the job done in low light without resorting to on- board flash.

The build quality is on par with that of the Canon 85mm 1.8 I had some time ago, that is to say its pretty good. Overall image IQ is good. Good colours, contrast and sharpness. The weakness of this lens is the corners IMO. But then I never really cared for the corners all that much unless Im shooting landscape. And even then the corners aren't "that" bad as some might make it out to be.

Overall pretty happy with this lens. In its FL range and in the prime world of lenses the only AF lens that can one up it is the Canon 24LII which costs 3x and the AF isn't as good surprisingly. The only other competitive lens is the Sigma 30mm F/1.4 but that is limited crop cam users.

I still think its a shame Canon doesn't include lens hood's for lenses that cost 400+. I bought the Pearson one from B&H FYI and its great.

Hope this helps from a recent buyer of this lens. :D

This lens has been given the most recommendations to me, Second was the 35mm f/2, and im just not sure the FL and the AF are what im going to want...Too close to the 50 I think and buzzy, Plus 1/3 a stop slower.. The people who recommended the 28 to me are also people i've talked to a lot on the forums so that also helps me

So I'm going for it, Ordered it plus the Vello EW-63II lens hood from B&H (Pearstone one is discontinued, the Vello one replaced it)

sounds great. I just bought the lens and pearstone lens hood a month ago and its discontinued, lol.

Anyhow, I can tell you without a doubt that 28mm is far more different than 50mm then you might think. Think about... its almost half the focal length. For me at least, they are two very different focal lengths.

Indeed, 28mm is a bit farther than the 35mm is, I was genuinely afraid the 35mm and 50 were going to just feel too close that one or the other was going to sit around and be unused...

Heres hoping i love this lens, I dont see the Bokeh complaints some people have on this lens like with others BTW, the Bokeh honestly looks pretty good to me

Got mine today

Im being reserved in my judgment so far as I have not gotten to shoot it very much (I slept most of today because i didnt sleep much last night and felt kinda sick)

My initial impression however, is positive, I want to say this lens has a very undeserved bad rap...

Although, I'm going to say the CA at f/1.8 is absolutely ridiculous, clears up quite a bit to f/2, In fact I'm feeling f/2 is a pretty "sweet" aperture on this lens because it seems to clean things up a lot without losing very much speed-wise over f/1.4

Heres the first few shots from it, no processing besides white balance and exposure(ie no sharpening), more just testing it out for the most part

My 28 1.8 doesn't really CA that much, but there's somewhat of a haze at 1.8 that clears up at f/2 - 2.2. Maybe that's what you're referring to.
Also, might be an issue with my monitor or the fact that my eyes are still almost closed at 8 am, but most of your shots seem quite a bit underexposed to me... The first 3 can do with +1 EC and the last 2 can do with at least +2 stops as I see it.

Is anyone using this for indoor sports?

Hows the af speed?

Shot some badminton last night and found that even on the 1dmk4 at ISO 12800 I was struggling to get a decent shutter speed (1/320) with my 17-40 at f4. Need a fast wide option, already got the longer stuff covered with my 70-200 2.8.

probably better off with a 16-35L with its faster AF. you could sell your 17-40 and get a mkI for an extra $250-$300.

It certainly worked! I've never thought about night time landscapes but you've hit the sweet spot.

Was there much light to start with or put it another way, how long did you wait after the sun had set?

Thanks for the comment... I really didn't expect anyone to think these were all that great...

To answers your questions there was not much light to begin with. Lets put it this way the lens was having a tough time finding a spot to focus on. I would say this was maybe about 1.5-2 hours after sunset. I took this shot quite a bit after the first few from this set above.

I'm considering getting one of these again as I'm making the move to all primes. I like the 28mm focal length, and I recall liking this lens for close up work but not so much for wide landscapes. My intent would be to use it for street photography because it's so small and light. I'd be using it on FF (Dig & Film) and 1.3x occasionally.

This lens is pretty awesome, but it needs an autofocus correction with bodies. I have second one, the first was awesome at my 40D, but i sell it after several usm brakedowns. My second one has some front, or back focus issues, but after correction it's razor sharp at my 5DII. It's nearly as good as 135 f/2L and images from 28 are easier to sharpen in post-process.

I like it, because of it's dimentions. It's so small and light, that you don't feel it when it's in your bag, and it's very discreet. Sorry, if i made some mistakes, english is not my main language, and i'm pretty tired right now ;)

No problem at all with your english :) It was perfectly understandable. I have owned the 28 f/1.8 in the past and I did like it, but I purchased it at a time that I was moving a lot of gear around so I wound up not keeping it.

I may or may not pick it up, but a big incentive to get it would be its physical size and having f/1.8 available for low light.

Mike - you may also want to consider the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 - fStopJojo swears by it.

I'll send that motion !! Lovely lens..Gives you almost 50ml in the old scale and stops down to 1.4. Worth your consideration.. :)

I'll send that motion !! Lovely lens..Gives you almost 50ml in the old scale and stops down to 1.4. Worth your consideration.. :)

Quick little thing having owned both:

-The 30mm f/1.4 is better optically, better bokeh, sharper, more flare resistant and much less CA to deal with at the wider apertures

-The 30mm is obviously faster, especially as i treat the 28mm f/1.8 as a 28mm f/2 not an f/1.8 because going from f/1.8 to f/2 improved my copy quite a bit in terms of CA

-The 28mm has better AF, its a bit quicker and that, And it focuses A LOT closer, the maximum magnification is 1:11 on the 30 versus 1:5 on the 28...

-The 30mm is cheaper, comes with a hood and a case and has a 4 year warranty...

I love my 28mm, but if it wasnt for the Sigma 30's dreadful MFD I probubly would have kept the Sigma over the Canon...

Makes sense to sell the 28 then...

The 50 gives the same FoV on FF, and the 85 gives the same as the 50 did

Just missing a 135 to replace the 85

This lens is still perfectly usable on full-frame. Especially if you want a 28mm for the specific focal length.

I'm a fan of 28 / 35 / 50 as a trio. So once I get the rest of my glass in order I will probably get one of these again.

Personally i dont like 28mm equivalent, I MUCH prefer 24 (Yeah yeah i know I'm weird) or 50, So if i went full frame id likely dump the 28mm sadly....

It's not weird. Just a personal preference. I like 24mm as well, but it sometimes is too wide. 28 is often just wide enough for me. 35 is my favorite all-around, and 50 is great for closeups and details.

Thank you... i agree aboout kid's expression... as far as the lens itself it depends on the use and the money you are willing to spend... i wasnt so strict about the focal length and i also couldnt afford 35L so i choose 28/1,8 (over 35/2 due to USM and 30/1,4 due to AF compatibility) and am pretty happy.

ilias ,important is what aperture use it on these fashion shotsQQ

I had to use manual and choose f over 2,2 (up to 4) for sharpness and DoF and speed up to 1/500 with iso 800 (mostly) and some 400...

Do you consider aperture important for sharpness, DoF or something else?

That's very true, for me personally my specific interest in the lens is BECAUSE of its focal length. I like very specific focal lengths (particularly 28, 35 and 50mm) I know they are some what close in range but I feel that when used properly they can each give a specific look.

I also like the idea of the 28 because it's so much smaller than my L primes, which are already smaller than the L zooms I used to have. I would consider the 24L II again but, A) It's not cheap and I don't have $1500 on hand, B) It's not small, and I would prefer a small lens for a wide, and C) sometimes for me 24mm is too wide for what I want to shoot, 28mm is a sweet spot.

I just wish the 28 had better image quality, then I wouldn't even hesitate. I mean, it's clearly not bad, but it's not incredible either. Nothing like the insanely good Nikon 28mm f/1.4. I'd definitely go after one of those via an adapter if it wasn't so darn expensive and rare.

Hey there, I'll get the hood, but BH didn't have any in stock. So I got the filter in the mean time. But I can say that I don't see any problems with the extra piece of glass.

Here are two that I took with the lens. Nothing special. Also no PP, Just import LR3 and resized, and uploaded to Photobucket.

Both were shot at 1.8.

It's indeed not a very flattering image. Not an image I'd take at f/1.8 (no reason to take it at 1.8) but that's what testing a lens is for.
The lens profile would probably help with the CA. To not use it is kind of "unfair" since it's just a matter of turning on and in my workflow that's on by default.
If you took the same shot - or have access to both lenses, I'm interested in seeing a comparison between the 28 1.8 @ 2.8 vs the 28 2.8 as well as both lenses on f/5.6 or so (which is what I would use for your image, since there's no dominant foreground element drawing the focus and there seems to be plenty of light and no movement).

Even with the lens profile and the CA correction there's practically no difference.
And I think it's stupid to ignore the bad performance at 1.8, generally.
You'd be better off with the 2x cheaper 28mm 2.8 because it's much sharper and has less CA, if you won't use the larger apertures of a lens, which is pretty much impossible on the 1.8 due to the horrible image quality.
I'm looking forward to compare these lenses to the Sigma 30mm 1.4!

Yeah, no doubt you can take amazing pictures with 1.8, but for me personally that CA was a deal breaker because I would use the aperture a lot. It all comes down to usage.

My copy of 28mm 1.8 makes very nice image quality in general. Yes it is a bit soft at corners @ 1.8-2.0 but good enough at f/2.8 and so on.
Anyway, EF 28 1.8 also has real USM and better looking bokeh compared to EF 28 2.8 (7 blade aperture compared to 5 blades).
Also, 1.8 version has much less vignetting.
At f/4.0, 1.8 version is clearly sharper on corners compared to 2.8..

edit:
I took one test shot at full aperture f/1.8

Cool shot! Never thought the 28 would be able to do a bit of macro.

Thanks! Yeah it focuses pretty close, so this worked out great.

Rene, nice work especially considering you were near the limits of your equipment. :)

I loved that lens on my 1DmkIIn when I owned that a few years ago and now on my 1DIII.

how does the 28mm f1.8 compared to 24L ii in terms of IQ at f3.2? (sharpness and contrast) aside from the focal length and the aperature..

I just picked up this lens from BH. I feel the image at 1.8 is very soft. Do you think it's normal, or this is a bad copy? Please let me know what you guys think.

Thank you in advance.

The 28mm f1.8 is soft at f1.8 if I read this review :

Use a tripod, flash and shoot at max sync speed. At 1/40s it could be a little camera shake. I mean if you're going to measurebate, do it right ;) :D .
