View Full Version : Canon EF 28mm f/1.8 USM

Like lots of owners of 1.6 crop cameras I would like to own a small fast prime lens with the equivalent FOV of a 'normal' focal length on full frame. The Canon EF 28 f1.8 seems to fit the bill and gets good reviews but I can find very few example shots.
If you have this lens show us what it can do! :)

Ok,
Check here:http://www.pbase.com/bosphorousman/inbox
Tip:
If you're using a 1.6 sensor camera and focusing at wide apertures, larger than f3.5 - f3.0, then you need to turn the MF ring to the right past the point of focus. Then press the shutter half way to zero in on your subject. This will give you more accurate focusing with the Digital Rebels. The 20D is supposed to have better focusing with larger aperture settings.
It's a great little lens that's on my camera most of the time (300D).

Nice shots - contrast and colours very good, but I still wonder about image quality after reading more reviews.
I would appreciate it if you could post some 100% crops - just crop the shot down to a rectangle of about the right size (max of 800x533 for a landscape format) and then save that as a file. Do not resize it - just do modest jpeg compresion and post the whole file - that is a 100% crop. I do it in Paint Shop Pro but any software should do this. Crops from both the centre and sides are best to show lens performance. Just make sure the cropped portions are in focus and there is no motion blur.

Why? The forum guidelines say max of 800 pixels on the longest side so any 100% crop below 800x799 would be 'acceptable'. I agree that you can generally make a judgement of IQ on a smallish 100% crop of the kind of size you quote. Several small crops from different parts of the image is more useful than just a large central crop. The crucial factor is not the size of the cropped image, it is that they are 100% crops i.e. no resizing.
That is assuming you can ever make such a a judgement using a monitor screen - the ultimate test I suppose is a print at 300 pixels per inch or so, isn't it? Am I right there? :)
So much to learn!

Thanks for the link - nice shots taken in just the kind of situations I would envisage - low light, not much space to move back etc.
Would you say that the IQ from this lens is better than your zoom at the same focal length and aperture? Which zoom do you have BTW?

Easiest way to get a 100% crop, is to set *canvas* size to 800x800px in PS I think...

Mike - you may also want to consider the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 - fStopJojo swears by it.
I have researched that lens as well. On paper it is ideal - f1.4 and closest to the magic 50/1.6 focal length. The trouble is - for every photographer who swears by it there are are two who swear at it! It really puts you off to hear of guys sending their lenses back - often more than once - and still not getting a good copy.

Thank you In2photos for those two links. They confirm that the key things are to take the crop from the original image (NO RESIZING or RESAMPLING) and to save the crop with NO RESIZING or RESAMPLING. Using smaller areas allows you to save with minimal compression.

Mike-
I use the 17-40L, the 100-400L, and the 28-135 IS as my zooms. The 28-135 has been used the least with the addition of my 28 f1.8, 50 f1.4, 85 f1.8, and 100 2.8 macro.
I find that the 28 f1.8 stopped down to f3.5 or f4.0 compares favorably to the 17-40L when it is stopped down to f5.0 or f5.6.
Hope this helps! :)

Thank you - very useful. I suppose in general primes should provide better IQ than zooms, but when the zoom is an excellent Canon L zoom like that, then 'compares favourably with' is good enough for me! :)

ok not sure if i did a crop correctly but here we go (for the leaves picture, which i believe was taken at f5.6 iso400 with my 300d). just viewed pic at 100% and cropped any old area. i suppose ill need to take this same shot at f1.8 and iso 100 for you to be able to do a real comparison but hopefully this helps a bit in your decision. the picture was simply just pointed in the middle and shot.

I would call those results excellent. It would be very useful to see a shot and a 100% crop from it taken at f1.8 if you can be bothered. As the DOF will be wafer thin I know that it will be a challenge. A crop from the central in focus area would be enough - at f1.8 I imagine most of the periphery will be intentional bokeh anyway!

ok shot of my longboard was aimed at somewhere on the "classic"
so heres the 100% crop too wide open at f1.8 ISO100. heh i think thats pretty nice and sharp already. sure blows the 28 on my 28-135 outta the water (my wheels have some texture on them so it may look more fuzzy than it really is). and remember thats with some compression already to make it fit the 100kb limit of this site. again no other processing done
man come to think of it the contrast and image quality on this lens is superb! my other lenses, when i do an auto contrast or auto levels in PS it usually shifts it alot to make it correct (according to PS) but when i take pics with this lens and put it in PS and do those auto settings, almost nothing (if anything) changes!

As this thread is aimed at people who might want this lens I thought it would be useful to share a comparison with the only other lens I have that includes 28mm in its focal range - the EF-S 17-85 IS. I took two shots of small flowers both at 28mm, f11 and 1/80th sec. The full images look just the same on screen but these 100% crops show the superiority of the prime:

Mini Review
So far: it does suffer from CA wide open as expected, focus is good but I often find it front or forward focusing but I'll put this down to narrow DoF/user error combined with the 350D's AF.
Brief indoor use with the 430EX shooting at f/2.2 proved pin sharp but I won't upload people pictures to the forums.

Does anyone have studio portraits to show with this lens? I'm getting it primarily for the field of view and to let me work at close range while maintaining depth of field. With the 50mm or 85mm, when I work close to the subject the depth of field can be too shallow.

I just got mine earlier this week and I am completely in love with it. It's the perfect complement to the 50mm f/1.4 and the 85mm f/1.8 and rounds out my studio primes nicely. I shoot with a 30D and wasn't sure I was going to like using it outside as a walkaround or 'normal' lens but I'm ecstatic and the focal length and field of view suit me very well.
The weather has been gloomy, so between that and being very busy I haven't done much more than some baisc testing. I'll get to shoot in the next couple of days but I can say that from my tests, this lens is superb and my copy is very sharp.

Just got this to go with my 40D as fast walk around prime. It's a great little lens I love how close it can focus. Very versatile. These are messing around shots straight out of the camera. I shoot RAW+JPEG but these are the JPEGS straight from the camera (Standard Picture Style). I was tossing up between this and the Sigma 30 f1.4 but they are basically the same IQ wise and this lens can focus a lot closer. Buy the way how !@#$ing good is the 40D!

I just got this lens and WOW!!! I'm loving it.
I went from 35 f2 -> sigma 30 f1.4 -> and then this baby and all I can say is why didn't I buy this in the first place?
Mine is very sharp @ wide open. And I am loving the focal length.
For you crop guys looking for general walkaround prime, this is IT!
This is very first shot I took with it which does no justice.

It had focus issue. Notorious front focus issue. And it hunts in low light which didn't make sense to me because I bought it to use it in low light.
It was a good lens but not as good as this one IMO.
Sharpness is about same @ 1.8

Cheers. We have apparent notoriety in Aus too, the official Sigma Distribution/Servicing Centre has a reputation for poor service. Something to keep in mind when tossing up between the 30 1.4 and something else.
Shame, the 30 1.4 looks so good when it works. Might have to buy one and just hope for the best.

I agree. The 30mmf/1.4 is a nice lens. I buy canon only, since their service center is near by (14 miles). To me service is a very important part of buying a product. I live in the west coast and sigma is in NY. If they had a service center in orange county, ca. I would *maybe* consider them.

Hmmm now you have me thinking. I sold my 35 because it just wasn't fast enough and accurate enough in the AF department. Was a great sharp lens otherwise. Then recently I tried the sigma and loved it at first. When focusing close it front focused but only a little. Then in real world testing I shot a gig with it and when I focused on the bass player it was nice and sharp and in focus on the monitor 4 feet away from him!! Not happy at all! So it went back yesterday. Now I'm in seach for a good lens for gigs. While I'd love the L, I don't have the money for a lens that I only use once a month.
Anyone have any shots of gigs or real low light stuff wide open or close to wide open?

the 28f/1.8 iss about 2 stops faster than the 24-105L's f4. So focal length wise you are covered.

get the 28mm for sure,
the sigma 30mm is limited to the 1.6x crop sensor bodies,
so if your looking to upgrade to anything above a 400D/40D series (5D & 1D series) it wont work,
unlike the 28mm :)

I have both but on a 20D.
If you are asking about "handholdability" then they work out about the same, however as always the slower IS lens gives more DOF but does not cope with moving subjects so well, the faster non-IS lens gives minimal DOF but will freeze movement better.
So they both have uses depending on the subject, so I would say no neither lens is redundant.

Here's a 100% crop of the originals. These were processed equally in Lightroom. Blues were desaturated to remove a slight tint from my hair. Yellows and some orange were desaturated to subdue the colors in the brick wall. Both pictures above had additional processing of USM 250, .3, 0 on the eyes only. the only thing i find a con is doing the close up head shots, has a little too much distortion i find.. but if you've got a 50mm (1.8, 1.4 or L) then your set!

^^^ great shots, the first one is my favourite, are those wide open? Great colors and contrast on the first and last one, the second one looks to be a little soft though, it maybe just the resizing...
I can't decide between this and the 30 sigma. I'm leaning towards the canon one. How does this lens work in low light? Does the AF hunts a lot?

2nd is soft because my friend was taking it and has never used an slr before, so she didnt focus it properly lol..
if your EVER going to look at upgrading to the 5D or any sensor thats larger than the 400D's 450D's 40D's sensor (1.6 crop) then definitely get the canon,
apparently people dont like this lens.. i have no idea why though, i've loved using it, the af is awesome, works awesome in low light, the only difference is the 2mm and the f1.4 compared to f1.8
i've used both sigma and canon and i would recommend both, but still the canon takes it for me because i will be upgrading to the larger sensor in the future

How good is this lens for portraits on a Crop 1.6 body? I need something wider than my 50mm 1.8, and I'm looking into this. Does anybody have more portraits using this lens? Mainly senior portrait style.

its awesome for anything more than one person^^
you may however find it slightly too short for doing single portraits as you have mentioned, have a look into the sigma 24-70 2.8, great IQ, tack sharp and you wont need to worry about it being the wrong focal length, or you could invest into a flash :)
which with your current gear list i would definitely recommend! lots of people will go and spend huge amounts of money on glass without even considering a flash, big mistake as i found out, as soon as i got a flash the pictures i was taking increased in image quality by a huge margin, especially portraits

Thanks for the advice. I have had a 430EX on my wish list for some time, but I've wanted more glass for right now.
I did want to know about multiple subjects in the picture too. I have a session coming up that is a mother and her 2 year old son. She's a friend of mine from work, and a photographer herself.

theres nothing stopping you using the 50mm and walking back an extra meter :)
the 28mm is a really great lens though, i find it hard to use on single portraits for anything less than 1/2 body shots because of the lens perspective when you get really close,
very handy focal length though..

I agree on that point, I have borrowed (been with me for a long time now haha) the 50mm F/1.8 and I love it... always walking around.... but some time when working in a confine space, I nearly kill my self falling off a cliff haha.. so Im also considering of getting this 28mm 1.8...
Another thing... since u talk about flash, I been borrowing flash from a friend, it is from his old film SLR... but I gave it back already... so Im looking into buying one.. wat flash are u using and what would u recommend...
