Thats a nice blue there. If it was that far away, did you use binoculars to spot it?

A 20D using a 500mm (x1.6) and a converter (1.4) means it was a loooooong way out. The DOF needs luck to manage at that distance maybe; the leaves in the lower foreground just have a better focus than the bird's beak.
