I might have to. I really want to do macro. I'm probably gonna start with a 430EX. One of my car windows stopped working unexpectedly and I had to spend over $500 because the window parts were supposedly rare. So that's on my credit card now. Once I pay some more of it off, my next purchase will be a flash.

The 430ex does a nice job Especially if you can get it off the camera mount.
This shot was taken with MP-E65 NOT 100mm but at 3x lifesize it shows how much light it can easily chuck out

Pipe down.

Nice tutorial, though...so, when you make another one, I'll give ya cost of parts, and 5 bucks for your time. ;) I'll pick it up over the weekend.

Goincarcrazy, that's a great tutorial. I may try that foam diffuser when I get a flash. Hopefully within the next month I'll have paid things off and will be able to get one. I normally do no like using the on-camera flash. But I'm gonna see what results I can get from it for the time being.

Just put a paper towel, or a sheet of bounce over it, and it'll be 'diffuse' enough. ;)

I ran across it a while ago and finally decided to try it out! It works pretty darn good, I must say! I can't remember the guy's name who made the DIY, but I thank him! haha. It cost me about 5 bucks in material from wal-mart.

Two taken over last two days.
1st one was of a red spider mite that was running around my sink after washing lettuce, its about 1mm in size. Flash at 45 degrees on hotshoe with a homemade reflector diffuser.

2nd one was taken yesterday just after making the reflector diffuser, I have a ring flash but thought I would give this a try it was from a thread on this site.

Thank you Tony, I really appreciate it, I love Macro but don't spend anywhere enough time doing it.

You are correct these were with my 580EX II off camera fired with the ST-E2 that I got a while ago. It was pretty awkward as both of them were hand held. So now I either need an assistant or some kind of mini light stand to put the flash on. A friend of mine has my 420EX Flash, maybe someday I will play with two different flashes.

The rest of the series can be seen here (http://funhouse69.smugmug.com/gallery/8887467_M99wa/1/589275420_3XBsW)...

You may want to wait a few more weeks (end of August). There is a rumor that it may get replaced with a new version. You can go for the new one (will cost more of course) or the old one at an even lower price. If you are not affected by this kind of things, then jus go ahead. But make sure to try it out first.

Goincarcrazy
27th of July 2009 (Mon), 14:41
ok, so I cheated on the flower :(, BUT it was taken with the 100mm. It's 2 images focus stacked, but I think I was at like f/4.5 or f/5.6 for both pics. To sort of save myself, I DID take a couple single shots at around f/8 and almost got the whole flower in. if I were at 11 I probably could have recreated this image as a single shot, just didn't have the light available.

Ahh, that answers it -- it's so hard to get a complete shot in the depth of field like that (especially if you are out doors with a breeze)! Nothing wrong with focus stacking to get it "right", and thanks for sharing your technique because it encourages me to try it out.

Yeah, combine ZM is a great little program, especially for macros (and for anyone with this lens+extension tubes). Sometimes it gets it wrong but there are 4 different stack types, so ya just gotta run down the list till you get the best one.

Great! So, am I reading correctly that the newest version is now Combine ZP? Is there an important difference or reason to stick with CZM?

And, compared with manually brushing a stack together with PS layers, is there any drawback with Combine?

Good stuff, thanks!

All you lucky people with CS4. I've only got CS3 :(, haha. It does what I need it to do, and CZM works for me. I've only stacked I think like 3 images, just to kinda toy with it. I will have to look into Combine ZP though.

Yes, not my statement originally, because I never owned one. Since th enew one has IF and the old one doesn't, AFAIK, that might well be the deciding factor in this case.

And please, yes, do get something up.

I'm glad you found it. Those shots are great. After playing around with this, I've been wondering why cameras do not purposedly incorporate a focus bracketing function, just like they do it for exposure (some even have white balance bracketing ... who cares!). Just manual focus on the middle ground, press the shutter, and a series at different focal planes (with customizable intervals of course) is taken automatically. Wouldn't be great?

That would be great, but as you know macro has a very narrow DOF. So, if you are like me and don't use a tripod, you may end up with several shots with the same focal point based on which way you move and how much you move during the bracketing process. You are right, it would be glorious for product shots so everything is in focus though.

You could just try a stofen (or diy version) of it, but I've found using a mini-softbox - like the Lumiquest type - to be very useful.

You could just try a stofen (or diy version) of it, but I've found using a mini-softbox - like the Lumiquest type - to be very useful.

Last night I built 2 different DIY diffusers. Once simple, and the other a bit more complicated. I'm testing them both in a few minutes.

The first one was made with an isopropyl alcohol bottle. The thing was actually so perfect of a fit that you would think it was designed with this purpose in mind. My hope is that because it's a white tinted transparent plastic, much like the stofen, it will function the same and for a much lower cost. Free.

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b376/JasonVictorero/bottlediffuser.jpg

The other that I built is actually based off of one I saw online.

http://www.flickr.com/groups/macroviewers/discuss/72157594312315664/

It's made with soda cans, some duct tape and a paper towel. The results people on there have gotten with it are quite nice, so I'm eager to test mine out. I don't drink soda, so I grabbed 2 cans from work. And I had a roll of duct tape and some paper towels at home. So, again, FREE. It's a bit messy looking, though.

The inside of the diffuse is the reflective inside of the cans. This is to increase the light efficiency. The guy who designed said he tried many diffusion materials with it, but got the best results with a simple paper towel. So we'll see how this goes.

I was actually looking for that. It was linked in a response to a question I had, but I couldn't remember where I'd asked the question. Apparently it was in this very thread. Thank you.

I went outside and tested these. It became very obvious to me that I have a lot to learn about exposure, especially when using flashes.

This shot is actually pretty good. I don't think autofocus would have given you better results. The subject is so small the camera probably wouldn't recognize it as worthy focus material and would more than likely go straight to the background. You did it right, manual was the way to go.

Ofcourse when i will buy that any of the Canon Macro flash i will buy their diffusers, and about 100mm macro, i sent it to Canon service because of lens mount have a little broken partially and will get it back soon i hope, but i was cross my finger over MP-E 65mm lately, dunno know why. ;)

The lens was great, though. Definitely something that I would not want to own, unless I owned a macro rail, as there's no way I could hand-hold that thing, at 5X magnification. ;)

A speedlight can be effectively used with a hotshoe cord for macro use -- that's what I'd recommend. Keeping a speedlight on the camera will tend to cause shadows.

Of course, a ringlight is nice because it comes closer to the subject, but try the off-camera flash approach in the meantime.

And i know one girl [called a sister], she is a member in our photography club, owned this lens, and we consider her as a lady of Macro, many members do macro anyway but she is dedicated to macro almost 95% and the store where i took my camera and lens told me that she was waiting that lens [MP-E 65mm] for months or years and now she owned it few months ago i can see her amazing nice shots, and to be honest i saw many great shots from this lens but few days ago i saw one person using this lens posted in his deviantart page and he made me to think badly about this lens, in all cases it is cheap lens because it is about below $1000, and automatically when i will buy this lens then MT-24EX will be included in the order, and ofcourse i will not use it too much but doesn't matter, i have many lenses i didn't use that much but happy to own and never regret to have, and ofcourse i will do all my best like using mirror lock-up, tripod,.... to have better results, even with hand-hold i am experienced.
