I got the regular 13-inch: 2.26GHz with the 160Gb HD. Probably gonna upgrade some things later on but for now it's just great! I already have Snow Leopard Installed since I only got it yesterday from the Apple store, they included a copy of it for me. And for now I'm trying out iPhoto for organizing and basic editing and Aperture 2 for everything else. So far so good.

i´m a bit nervous about the install of SL...windows used to produce problems :D

nice choice...love it already:D

I think these may be my first non-macro shots posted to this thread. I found myself unexpectedly at the shore around sunset this week, with just my 20D and 100mm Macro. No tripods, no wide angles...

Still, I think I came away with some decent results:

Goincarcrazy
8th of September 2009 (Tue), 09:51
First 2 were extension tubes (just the 36mm, but not as close as I could have got so they were probably achievable with just the lens), and the second 2 are just the lens. Here's one more that was taken with just the lens that shows how incredible it can be.

Here is a native insect eating plant. It has one of those long names that Who knows I would have walked right past these, they are so small. The naked eye can hardly see the detail you can bring up through the lens. One plant is taller and upright while the other is small and circular but the "Dew drops" are the stick stuff that captures the insects and they are then slowly devoured. You can see from the second shot the outer arms have bent inwards to push the insect towards the center.

The circular one I shot 4 photos and photo stacked them in photoshop CS4. Some of the later ones are also stacked with between 3 and 5 shots.

Thanks Daniel, I am glad you like the shots. The lens makes a great portrait lens and even a great f2.8 lens so long as you don't mind using your legs as the zoom; but the lens really comes into it's own as a zoom lens, thats for sure.

If you have enough room to back up to fit the whole subject in then this is a great portait lense. Just the fact that this lense is prime and yet so versitile makes it a winner. I think for full body shots I had to stand around 50 feet away, but that number could be off. Long story short, if you have the room to zoom with your legs, it's a very nice studio or controlled portrait lense. It is not however a great wedding lense, or event requiring different focal lengths with little notice. Hope this helps some.

Thanks for the response Dan. I won't be using this lens for full-shots, mainly just head and shoulders portraits. I'd also be sticking this on a 5D II, so it should behave rather similarly to my old 50mm on APS-C, a combo I rather enjoyed for portraits.

Col,
the newly released Canon 100mm macro will be even better. It is now an L series lens with the red ring and is also image stabalised so should do your job just fine. It will be a real 100mmlens on the full frame of the 5DMkII. For macro work it would shorten your lens too much on e a full frame for me I would have to go to the 180mm for working room.

I tend to use flash pretty much most of the time - it just makes it easier getting sharp, well exposed shots. However, you will need to diffuse it well - the Lumiquest-type softbox works well for me, but you could always fashion something effective out of plastic or even a white plastic bag!! :)

Samina, I do use flash for a lot of my macros. I think it really makes the subjects pop. I use a really simple rig (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showpost.php?p=8599030&postcount=550)

the trick with flash + water is to watch your reflections. here the flash was horizontal to the flower to minimize the direct reflection back.

It's considered a normal safety margin to have your shutter speed at twice whatever the focal length of the lens is if you're shooting hand-held so 160th is actually in the danger zone to a small degree if you have any kind of shakiness in your grip of the camera.

Cheers!

I hadn't shot macro for awhile, but yesterday a little beetle bug had the temerity to show up in my domecile, and I decided to try to take some shots of it.

As it turned out, the bug was determined to escape from captivity, so I had the brilliant idea of putting it briefly in the freezer to slow it down. Unfortunately, I got a phone call that distracted me from retrieving it in a timely manner and it expired.

So, I had to make do with laying it on its side in a prone position and taking shots, but then had to pretend I was getting other interesting shots...

I shot with the 1D3 and the 100 macro, and added three stacked tubes because it was so danged small, but here is a shot, the first full frame, the second rotated and cropped to yield a "Portrait"...

I went out and bought an eye dropper to splash the water, and set a coffee mug filled to the brim in a tupperwear. I'd go with a much bigger tupperwear or some sort of container next time, cause I made a huge mess! haha

I found it was pretty tough to drop the water, and use the remote trigger to catch the waterdrops by yourself, especially because the drops didn't fall in a very predicitable way. It was a lot of trial and error. I am hoping next time it goes a lot smoother =)

As far as setting it up, the trick I learned after a bunch of research was to kill off all of the ambient light and use the fasted flash possible to stop the water... apparently it is the speed of the flash and not the shutter spead that is most important for this type of photography. Anyway, that is my amatuer experience with shooting water drops for the first time haha

I've got one, and it's very crisp, and very handy--especially when you don't have time to set up a macro rig. The autofocus/Canon compatibility make it fast for quick close work; they also make it a very good walkaround lens.

The only downside I've discovered in mine is a touch of garishness in the color. I don't know if that's me or my camera body or the lens, but I've noticed I must tone down the colors a tad in editing. Of course, I've been comparing it to my Voigtlander 125, so maybe it's not fair to criticize it. The Voigt wins hands-down in my estimation, but at two or three times the price, of course.

But, the 100 is very versatile. It is super lightweight and small. I'll probably hang on to mine even though I've got the Voigt. I've found it works nicely for macro, and just as nicely all-around.

newb2pro_1day_or_so

The black bar looks similar to the shutter lag when I use flash and shoot beyond my shutter sync speed. This usually only happens with off camera flash, for me at least. I'm not really sure what would cause a black band besides it looks like you are taking a picture of your shutter partially closed.

Yes you are correct , I'm shooting in "M" mode , off camera flash when I use any speed more that 200 , so I reduce the speed to 125 and the bar disappeared .
but how others are doing the drop shots with very high speed ?

If your flash is on cam, set it to high speed sync. With OCF, you'll need the junior poppers or new PW's to do higher than 1/250.

first is, with that lens, the distance would be mere inches from the front of the lens...so the question is...how could you get that close without it flying away? it is a fly after all, not a spider or other bug. pardon my stupidness if i don't get it.

second, with that lens the dof, is extremely narrow, so it seems like it would be dificult to keep the fly sharp, however the fly didn't move much (which is another thing i'm wondering)...but the question is did you have to continuously manual focus or change focus even slightly at any point? i'm assuming this is shot wide open? (not sure how the video works with regard to if you can choose aperature, then does it set the shutter, do you adjust the iso, does it do it by itself, etc.)?

Great videos, Romy. Thanks for sharing them.

The second clip is totally something I would see on the Discovery channel (minus the music, plus narration). It reminded me of Planet Earth, actually!

Thanks, Krepta! :)

1. I've to inch the rig very slowly till the front element is just about 5"-6" away from the fly. I guess flies are more alarmed with sudden motions, and one can get really close if the movement (approach and focus fine-tuning) is very slow.

2. I manually focused before each recording. Can't touch the focus ring during recording because shake will be noticeable. I shot f/7.1 - f/8, and this is still very thin DOF when shooting at minimum focus distance. However, I couldn't stop down much more for deeper DOF because I was already using ISO 1600 - 3200 on a shutter speed of 1/60 sec. I reckon the 100 2.8 macro loses a couple of stops of light between infinity and MFD even if the aperture is held constant. With the 5D2, you can shoot in auto mode (the camera chooses the Av, Tv and ISO) or full manual (you can set the said three parameters, which I did for that footage).

This sweat bee was about the size of a grain of rice.

Yes, there were taken in available outdoors light, no artificial lighting.

Hi Romy

Great vids! The love bugs look like ladybirds or ladybugs depending on what part of the world you are from.

Look forward to seeing more!

do you mean sharp enough? cuz the water droplet seems clear enough.
i'm sure you are either missing focus (because of dof, or the focus point is off) or shutter speed is too slow.

Manual focus? Stick a target where the water droplet will land and focus there.
Looking at your pictures though it seems you are shooting at an angle to the path of water, unless you have huge depth of field with the 100 (you don't) you will get OOF shots most of the time.
Shoot perpendicular to the path of water and use a background, this way the water will at least be in the focus plane.
I've never shot water drops but this sounds logical.
