i think the angle you're shooting at is a little strange...you shouldn't really be able to see what's underneath the water...shoot more straight ahead, this way you won't be shooting from above like it looks you are...if you're shooting from above there's no way the whole drop/splash will be in the limited DOF...

Hey, those are some nice shots for ambient light only and at such a high ISO. I shoot with the 50D as well and mine gives quite a bit of noise at that level. Did you use a noise reduction program?

-Solved-
And does anyone else's manual focus ring make clicks or sounds when you turn it to the left? It makes turning it a little less smooth, it doesn't happen when I turn it to the right though.
WhyFi
28th of December 2009 (Mon), 22:02
No, no clicks, but you've got to stop down a lot more when you're focusing that closely - f/3.2 at MFD isn't going to do you any good.
edit - oh, and your shutter speed is absurd, unless you're on a tripod with a remote trigger... and you're at ISO 100 - you've got all kinds of things working against you, first and foremost being light, or lack thereof.
JonSC
28th of December 2009 (Mon), 22:16
^ I think I've got the sharpness issue fixed now, thanks! I was using a tripod and I had it on timer.
The issue that still stands is the clicking. It isn't very loud but noticeable because it causes turning the ring to the left less smooth... and I can actually feel it. I wonder why that is?
wkahwkah
29th of December 2009 (Tue), 00:37
Thanks, on those corals shots, I probably used F8~F11, iso 100, remote shutter release on tripod.
Even w/ F8~F11 DOF is still thin so focusing was done in liveview at 10x mag

Happy New Year to you as well!
I'm thinking they're a special edition and that Coke is trying to pay off the moulds in a hurry. :) I think they were something like a couple of dollars each but Mehran can tell us for sure once he's up. :)

Yea they are special editions for the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics. They are normally something like 3$ each but my friend works at a dep so she got them for me at like 2$ for both.
They are really expensive and I think the amount of aluminium used for each is about 3 times a normal can which actually contains more. But to be honest they just look way too cool. I just like to collect them. I never drink coke anyway. I have yet to get Diet Coke which is a silver bottle.

I'm not a heavy drinker, only on very rare and special occasions will I drink to get drunk. And even then I am blessed, I never ever get hangovers no matter what.
I am one of those rare people that actually likes the taste of whiskey and scotch, and when I get drunk there is no more taste so not good anymore.
Oh yea and I absolutely despise vodka. Even grey goose. With that said, a friend of mine gave me a vodka with 2 big pieces of vanilla inside, it had turned brownish and it actually tasted very good.

Greetings,
I attached it to EF1.4x TC, 25mm tube extension. This is what I get. Should I still want to trade it for the new 100mm 2.8L IS macro? Enjoy...

Just purchased the 100mm 2.8 macro non usm off of fellow POTN member STETSONAW today. Thanks Andy!
Here is my first macro pic. I think I am going to get addicted to this lens...

Yeah, going the route of the 100L, though, it was tough to choose between that and the brick. Wife vetoed the brick.

Good to see you, Manish!

Well we had our own cold spell a while ago -- I went out and took some pictures of frozen waterfalls! Now it's been moderate, and I heard this morning that things are warming up on the east coast. The situation in Haiti has been pretty heart-wrenching, though.

What are the arguments for this lens over the newer L with IS version?
I've looked at both threads and really can't tell if one does better over another?
Trying to find the justification of the extra $500+ for the L IS model over this one.
palaima
16th of January 2010 (Sat), 05:54
Well the new one seems to have L-colors, weather sealing, better built overall and some say it is sharper, this one is 500$ less and still has IQ that matches his big brother. Oh yeah, the autofocus on the new one is better and the IS comes kinda handy at close distances.

the new one has weather sealing, its more sharp wide open, and has IS.
IMO for macro it isn't worth the difference, but if you plan using the lens for portraits, then it can start justifying it.

Well, part of the reason I want this to be my next lens is I do shoot some portrait type shots of my 7 month old son and lots of my friends and their kids too, and I'm wanting to start shooting still life macro type shots of action figures etc, so making it dual use is what I'm after. I already own the 24-70mm f/2.8L so I wholeheartedly believe in the value of an L based on my first lens. I'm just trying to see if there is a real $500+ extra value in the L version over the this one. Weather sealing I don't care about, not using it in any weather situations. I will be shooting some macro of aquarium life too, so extra bright colors are important. I guess the L is sounding better the more I consider it.

do you need IS or not...that's the difference to me...if you're taking macro shots of somewhat moving objects i think using your flash plus the non IS would give you better results...of course you could do that with the IS version as well...but the IS isn't really neccesary...i think the IS would be more useful for non-macro shots...

Some of my macro shots would be moving a bit, the reef aquarium shots. The rest would be still life. I would think the IS would come in handy when taking the portrait shots of my 7 month old...?

I love IS but not the tag which goes along with it.
I was in SF at the museum inside taking shots with the 2.8, I finally gave up and switched to the 28-135 3.5-5.6 with IS so I could at least come home with something usuable. I think trying to shoot macro on the fly would be the equivalent of trying to hand hold a 500mm prime without IS.
That's just me, I go out unprepared.

Having ISO is great when shooting hand-held in less-than great lighting, but of course it won't help with moving subjects.
If you do shoot macros hand-held it could make a real difference in how many keepers you end up with, since macro shooting tends to benefit from narrower apertures to squeeze out more depth of field, making slower shutter speeds more needed. IS may swing the difference there.
I personally don't feel compelled to jump to the L lens because I don't use my 100 a lot and when I do I am typically not shooting hand-held, or else I am managing my light for what I'm shooting. and, this lens delivers great shots.
I am, though, happy with my L lenses and happy with IS, so if I was doing it over again I'd certainly consider the L, but, well, I'm happy enough with this lens that I don't have the motivation to jump.
As far as whether it is worth more money, over the long haul whatever benefits your photography is worth more money. That's the choice we make when we choose an L lens or an IS lens -- if this will provide a long-term benefit to my photography then it is worth more to me.

I've been scanning some of my old slides to convert them to digital and ran across this. It was taken with the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM lens and Fuji Velvia 50 slide film; probably with my old Canon EOS A2E. I kind of miss that camera & film combination, but digital is so much more convenient. Available light...no flash used. This is a wonderful lens.

Not sure if the 24-70 will do it, if you look at the video I posted the guy looks to be using a 17-40 L, maybe a 24-70? I cant tell. He definitely isn't using the new 100mm L macro.

Yep, you're right - it is a little unsharp. No fault of the lens though. Its a 100% crop, ISO 800, and I was shivering at the time with no tripod. And shooting through a fence. And wide open, which this lens is slightly soft at.

mine was a simple setup with shutter speed at 1/200th of a second,f16.0,iso 100. I used the canon macro flash underneath a half 10 tank (a 5 gallon with the same foot print as a 10 gallon) i set the focus by laying a folder across the top at the point i would let the dropplets go
thats about it for mine
