Just joined the club!
I've had this lens twice actually. Rented it once to take to DC for Cherry Blossom Festival and the other time I bought it to sell when I got lucky finding one during the Circuit City closing. I kick myself for being stupid and not keeping it!!! It's gone up $200 from what I paid!!!
Anyway, I'm selling my 85 1.8 to finance this and can't wait to start shooting everything as close as I can!

This thing is awesome. Looking at your lens lineup I can see you need to get a prime. The 100mm is pretty long in regards to a walkaround but I love it for pics of our boy outdoors. I love my two zooms but I use my three primes 10 times more than them.
Wonderfully.
Thanks!

The 100 and the 5d make a nice couple :).

It was regular size. I would say I was about a foot or two away. This shot was cropped and as you can see it keeps it's IQ.

I'm torn between this and the L...arghh! I think I'll go for this, I shouldn't splash out too much at the moment.
Does this one hold it's value well?
Yes it holds it's value well for now.. was better before the L came out though.
Get the L. the IS helps a LOT when you need that extra DOF at such close distances.
IS will let you handhold 1/30 . I have the non L and now I crave IS

The background is already very blurred, or do you mean you want more in focus? Are you using a tripod? You should have been able to get closer to the leaf, and it doesn't looks very sharp, either missing focus or too slow of a SS.

The tripod would be my suggestion as well - if you're goal is to have the background more defined. Tripod and slower shutter. The other question is how far away is the background?? If it's a foot or so you should be able to get more detail.. but if it's much more than that you might now be able to get it too focused.

Guys,
Thanks for your advice, I was using a tripod. There was a bit of a breeze which was causing the subject to move, but even at that the DOF is sooooo shallow. Had posted a similar request for help over on FM and got some suggestions for using stacking software.
My tripod is a Manfrotto 055-somthing or another, but it has rubber feet. When I have Live View set to 10x magnification the rubber feet on the tripod induce vibration.
After putting the lens to some use over the weekend I began to see that the shooting angle is very important to maintain clarity in the photos, what can one do but persevere!!
Thanks again.

Keep the legs on the tripod as short as possible, do not extend the center section, use a remote release or the self timer, keep it out of the wind and let the tripod settle into the dirt for a bit before taking a picture.
When getting really close up and going for that 1:1 shot the DOF is <.1" which is slim to none, even at F32. With the good qualities of this lens can you pull back and crop like crazy? It will give you more DOF.
It is my opinion that the DOF calculators for macro give you a "usable" DOF not a sharp one. If you are still having vibration problems with the tripod, go get a Berlebach one and they will end.

Sometimes if it's breezy you've just got to fire off 20 shots and hope you get one that doesn't show too much movement... other than that, try a diffused flash so you can bring your shutter speed up enough to freeze any motion. The only other thing would be to move away from the subject as already suggested. That should increase the DOF but you won't get as much magnification obviously. BTW, I think most people limit their aperture to f/11 for macro. Going beyond f/11 may introduce softness due to internal refractions.
tonylong
30th of March 2010 (Tue), 20:42
Niall, you had your aperture set to f/2.8, very wide for a closeup shot, meaning you only had that liitle part of the wind in focus. As the aperture is narrowed (higher f-number), the more of your image around your plane of focus will be focused.
At close distances, even a very narrow aperture will still leave a lot soft, but you have to balance things, realize that a Macro is meant to only capture a very small subject, and learn how to work with things.
Just to know, though, shooting with smaller apertures also means your shutter speed will have to be slower, so you really need to not do this in a breeze:)! And, practice all the steady shooting techniques you can.
Live View can be useful, but yes you show any vibrations at 10x. Again, wind really works against you and also those vibrations will show just by you touching the camera or the lens. It takes a bit for the gear to settle down so you can see things clearly.

These problems with small aperture, long exposures and subject movement are the reasons so many use flash with a macro lens. As you're in close you can get a lot of light on the subject, allowing small apertures and short exposures, not to mention better contrast.

Kevin, Dan & Tony,
Thanks for all you help, I'll have a go at it again this weekend. Using max aperture was an attempt at getting faster shutter speed to reduce vibration, in the poor light of early spring.
Next time out I'll take my flash, diffuser and cable release. I'll put a few shots up next week and hopefully they will have improved.

My husband got me this lens for Christmas, I have yet to use it, most of the images I see in this thread are something that you could take with a zoom or a 50mm 1.4 or 1.8. I wanted to close up sharp pics of ants and their hair, and things like that, after getting this lens I learn that it came from a specialty lens.
Since I do not see how I will use it that much, should I sell it? I guess I could get a nice picture with the 50mm 1.8 of a butterfly or something on a bush?

You can get these types of pictures with the other lenses you mentioned but with less image quality. If you want ant hair and such you could use extension tubes to do that with the 100 2.8 and it is cheaper than a new lens. Try setting your 55-250 to ~f8 and 100 mm and take two shots of the same object and compare or you can sell it if you are a zoom type person too.

Lenses generally do not show their sharpest focus at their largest aperture. Stopping down to f/8 will allow you to compare sharp images from both lenses.

My biggest suggestion for using a flash is to get a flash extension cable. at close distances, an on-board flash will have a tendency to cast a shadow on your subject. They sell dedicated flashes for macro use which move the flash closer to the subject, but unless you have one some creative off-camera flash can really improve your chances.

Thank you sir :), I should correct my post actually I only used 1 light. I had 1 BXRI 500 positioned overhead w/ a medium sized softbox, the light was positioned to camera-right. I had the 5D tripod mounted but relatively close to the knife. I pulled back some to get more of the handle as well.
I was going to use the black leather sofa I have as a background, but I used my leather jacket instead! I scrunched it up a little bit to give it that wavy look for some depth.
It took a number of frames to get the position of the knife right. If it was off by even the tiniest amount the reflection wouldn't catch the edge and it would be completely black.
Glad you like it though! I appreciate the comment!

Here's a couple more shots. Also taken with the 5DmkII and 100 Macro. I went out hiking with a couple friends yesterday and saw all kinds of animals and insects along the trail.
I saw this centipede (I think, not really sure what this is) moving really fast along the trail in a snake-like manner. It's entire back was silver and it looked like armor in the sun, really cool!

Continuing along the trail there was a plant covered in ladybugs and small beetles, pretty neat to see. I tried to shoot just this one that was on its own in the upper part of the plant, but it kept moving around and I missed its head lol!

Admittedly I never really try to shoot insects, I'm not a big fan of bugs in general so I typically don't enjoy shooting them. But I figured since I'm out here I may as well give it a shot.
