Ran across this dragonfly while working in the yard this morning.

They are mostly uncropped, but at least a couple of these were shot with a "Sakar" brand doubler, so they may appear closer than you can actually get with this lens alone.

hi everybody. just a quick question:

I'm thinking about selling my beloved Tamron 60mm f/2 macrolens. I love it for it's small size. It's very lightweight and I often use it as a "walkabout lens" for shooting all kind of stuff - flowers, insects, portraits of my kids, etc.

BUT ... I also own the 50mm 1.4 (which I cannot sell), whose focal length is quite close to the tamron.

getting a 100mm prime would be a nice addition to my existing primes (35, 50)

But I'm a bit sceptic. How do you like it handheld? Is it okay to use it handheld, because I don't wanna use a tripod. Or is it too long without IS? I have a steady hand, though.

What do you think? Should I try it or save some extra money for the L-version?

Madweasel
25th of May 2011 (Wed), 16:14
I have no trouble handholding the 100mm in normal use. Compared with the 50mm if you just notch up the ISO one stop you can use the same shutter speed. For really close macro it is often best to use off-camera flash.

Good for things that don't move, but for insects etc. flash is the better way to go.

Dirk, I agree with the idea of the flash, and off-camera is good with really close stuff to get the lighting at the right angle, although it can be awkward when you are hand-holding. I do use the tripod a lot when I can, depending on conditions and subject matter, but if not, good technique!

It's an excellent lens!

Yes, but keep it off camera if you can. The Canon off-camera cord is a good investment. I usually have a tripod around and often use it for stationary items, but more often these days mount the flash on it which leaves both hands free to work the camera.

Better still, pocket wizards or similar leave everything free!

Agreed - I should have said that. I either use the ST-E2 (hence missing out the wires) and have the flash on a macro bracket, or use the dedicated MT-24EX Macro Twin Lite for closer work.

When photographing insects(flies, dragonflies, bees), do you reckon the 100mm is enough to get a good shot? To get 1:1 you have to be 30cm close to the subject, and when you look through this thread, it's mostly photos of flowers. I'm really interested in this lens but since I mostly will photograph insects and small animals I wonder if it's really worth getting it.
Granted, it's good for more than just macro photograph, but I'm not shooting much portraits and macro is the No.1 thing this lens would be used for.

There are some really nice photos of spiders and butterflies here.
It would be nice though to see that people using extension tubes could write that and which photos they were used with. It's making it very hard to decide whether to get this lens or not when you don't know if the photo was taken with the lens alone.
Other than that, this thread is very nice!

Well, it is certainly possible to get decent shots of insects, there are examples in this thread if you have a good look through (I've posted a couple, here (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/41858/IMG_8906.jpg) and here (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/41858/IMG_5371.jpg) although they're not to the same high standard that people like LordV (http://www.flickr.com/photos/lordv/) have managed). You do have to get quite close to get a reasonable magnification on them, but I've found that bees tend to be fairly slow moving and aren't too bothered by the camera and lens being too close.

The problem with getting a lens with a longer focal length is that you need progressively faster shutter speeds to get a crisp photo - ideally you'll want to get a flash and maybe a diffuser at some point because trying to keep a decent shutter speed when you're stopped down to f/10 or whatever becomes a challenge. A longer focal length makes it even harder, plus there are depth of field issues with a longer lens.

Those are some really nice photos from LordV there!
I haven't been doing much macro, mainly due to the fact that I don't have a macro lens, I have tried some "fake" macro with the 55-250 though. I noted with that lens that a shutter speed of about 1/200(Can't go any faster with on board flash), f.11+ and the on board flash yielded some good results when it came to the DOF and exposure. I'll definitely buy another flash later too, and a cord so I can use it off camera. Until that though I plan on using the on board flash with a small diffuser on it. I've had good results with the diffuser before, though I've never tried it with macro photography.

I've had good results with the diffuser before, though I've never tried it with macro photography.

I totally endorse what Jo said...the lens is plenty long enough for most work, though you'll find a set of extension tubes invaluable as well. And go with the off camera flash...and a simple reflector if necessary.

This pic was taken with the lens without tubes. I mounted my 580 EX2 on an old tripod so I had both hands free for the camera. (Handheld)

hello people - wow, that is a great shot! Mind sharing some of the setup ??

Sure...basically I copied this guy...very, very simple...except I was indoors using a flash...he was outside using sunlight...

Those are the type of photos I am looking for! Thank you very much! I'm more likely to buy the lens than not now :) Just gotta gather the money lol, I'll come back here in 5-6 months or so with some hopefully good photos!

Thank you very much for you reply! I think the order of buying will be, this lens, a uv filter and a hood for it(Since you're gonna be so close to subjects it might be a good idea to protect it, some insects like spraying stuff around when they feel threatened), a flash and a cord for it :)

You are welcome.

I wouldn't be too concerned about a filter, though that is a personal choice, but the lens hood is a must, except for very close-up work, as often you will have the light source where it may fall on the unshaded lens and degrade the image.

Also, I use this lens for all sorts of work apart from macro, and as I shoot contre-jour a lot of the time I wouldn't be without a lens hood.

Keyzer, a good start indeed, and good composition on both shots. The second is marred by slight camera movement, showing you needed a higher shutter speed, best achieved by lifting the ISO a bit (rather than opening the aperture which would have limited your depth of field).

Thank you. Yes, you're right. I've should have used ISO1600, but I was so surprised the damselfly didn't fly away when I got so close (too close, I think, I couldn't get all of it), and fired away.
