Hi guys,

I'm searching for a macro lens and fluctuate between this EF 100mm and the EF-S 60mm macro.
I mainly want to take pictures of crabs and shrimps in fish-tanks with a depth of 25 centimeters (the tank). Is the 60mm lens the better choice for this ? I only have a Canon 300D (Rebel).

best wishes from Germany :)
Robert

The working distance (from the end of the lens to the subject at 1X magnification) is 86mm for the 60mm and 143mm for the 100mm. So you will find it easier to get more magnification with the 100mm.

Chandler.

An awesome lens to play with. Pros: It makes small things big! Cons: It is addictive.

The biggest con for using a macro lens is you need to keep your sensor clean otherwise it really shows.

I was bored last week, since it has been raining a lot here in southern california. So I wanted to test it with AI-Servo using my 30D. My GF came over for lunch and whe she left I asked her to wait. I then went on the middle of the street and started to snap shots as she drove off. The lens never missed a frame and they were all tack sharp. I also used it to shoot some BMX last year at the Honda Open Surf and the results were pretty amazing.

I think folks talk about being slow in very VERY dim light and sure it is. It is also a great lens for portraits!.

In combination with the 5D...what's the closest you can get with this lens?
(a sample shot would be great)

The lens closest focus is about 145mm from the end of the lens giving life size (1X or 1:1) magnification. Thus the area imaged is the same as the size of the sensor, so 22mm across for a 40D and 36mm across for a 5D.

I'vebeen wanting to get in to REAL macro, but don't have the cash. Is it worth it to trade in the 70-200? The 100 is 2.8, AND macro...but the focus is slower....but it's sharp....but's a prime...AHHHH!

This looks like a really sweet lens. I was thinking of just getting some extension tubes, but now I'm thinking I want this lens. I really like the idea of having a longer portrait lens than my nifty fifty, so that's a big selling point right there. I'm just not sure how into macro I would get. I know I would like it, but I don't want to be dragging my tripod around or a flash. What kind of results could I expect handheld and without a flash? Would a macro lens still be worth it?

Sigma 25.7cm vs Canon 31cm

Not too much difference but I'd still opt for the Canon between these two. If it were between the Sigma 150mm and the Canon 100mm I may lean toward the Sigma. The features betwen those 2 are much more similar except the Sigma has an extra 50mm focal length (an extra 7cm working distance).

That is the sensor to subject distance, I am after the working distance from the end of the lens to the subject. The Canon is about 143mm.

The Sigma 150 is a nice lens but with that little bit of extra WD comes a surprising increase in weight. I have the 100mm and MP-E and plan to get the 180mm but mostly for tripod based work.

More than the Canon?

You have that wrong, assuming the Siggy is internal focus

WD=MFD - Lens_Length - Sensor_to_Mount_EOS
WD=257 - 95 - 44=118mm compared to the Canon 100mm at 143mm. You must have forgoten to subtact the 44mm.

Is that the 180mm sigma or canon?

Was thinking of the Canon, a cheaper alternative is the Tamron (losing compatibility with Canon TCs possibly). The Sigma I wonder about as it is a bit soft wide open in the only life size test I have ever seen. http://translate.google.com/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nnplus.de%2Fmacro%2FM acro100.html&langpair=de%7Cen&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&prev=%2Flanguage_tools though to be honest I haven't though beyond, sometimes I could use a longer percepective macro lens.

Considering the amount of time I am not getting to take photos it is probably not a big priority.

All of my shots are using natural light since I don't have an external flash and the onboard flash isn't really great for macro. While my method can produce some nice results, you can't really work in any harsh sunlight, and you usually have to bump the ISO to around 800 to handhold. This is certainly usable, but it can be tricky.

As for having more shots, I'll check through what I have against what I posted and maybe post some more shots when I get some time. You can also look in the Macro forum for nay threads started by me and you'll probably find some more.

They do from time to time but it an expensive option for many and of limited help at life size; 8 degree of lens tilt is only 15 degree of focus plane tilt at 1x.

Dan

A closed mouth gathers no feet.

... hang on was that your foot going in you mouth?

;) Only joking.

Good for flowers, mushrooms and other still life macro with not too much magnification, but you could probably get the same effect using focus stacking (often do this with mushrooms). Not great for bugs I expect.

Well guess who got a brand spanking new one of these today!
<<< This guy! I'm so excited. I borrowed it a while back and really liked it but didn't have much time to fully enjoy it. Now it is going to be different. I don't think I'll be shooting bugs so much but I really like close up detailed shots of whatever. I've read every available review about this lens and it sounds like its pretty much as good as it gets, one of the very finest CANON makes.

Of course, you can 'crop' pictures, since the 100mm 2.8 macro isn't like the MPE-65. Both totally different lenses...and with 5x magnification, the MPE is probably the only lens out there, of it's kind. No comparo, for the 100....though, I still love my 100...hehe.

More than the Canon?

You have that wrong, assuming the Siggy is internal focus

WD=MFD - Lens_Length - Sensor_to_Mount_EOS
WD=257 - 95 - 44=118mm compared to the Canon 100mm at 143mm. You must have forgoten to subtact the 44mm.

I think he did indeed forget to subtract quite a few bits.

The Siggy is not an internal focus lens, and its WD is actually 6.5 cm at 1:1, less than half that of the 100 mm, and even 30 % less than the Canon EF-S 60 macro.

Kind regards, Wim

They´re supposed to magnify you´re subject even further than you´ll be able to do now only with the lens. Any opinions and experience?

You're better off with extension tubes if you can help it. Alternatively use a teleconverter if you want to keep some distance.

I used to use the close-up filters but I found anything more than +2 dioptre started blurring around the edges of the frame.

Yup - extension tubes all the way !! Depth of field is tiny; even at F16 and you really need a macro flash because you lose a couple of stops of shutter speed.

This is a shot with the Canon Macro lens and 3 kenko extension tubes - Approx 2x life size.

I even saw a real hummingbird today, fired off a couple of shots, but, needed more length, in the lens. He/she (not sure yet) let me get within a few feet. I'll have to revisit...once I see it again...with a longer lens. At least I know they are around. :)

There is no image quality differences at all since they are just hollow tubes.

The difference is in the build and electronics. Canon's ones are very solid and from memory will report to the camera whereas the Kenko ones feel rather flimsy (probably wouldn't break though) and they don't report.

The latest version of the Kenko one supports use on EF-S lenses as does the Canon.

Kenko's come in a set of three for less than you pay for 1 Canon.

Not realy like that but close I don't have anyone in Croatia who's importing Kenko so when I order from USA this set cost me more then 12+25 extension tubes from Canon. (transport cost, import taxes,...) So I will buy 2 Canon tubes (for 200 USD in total)

It is very useful without flash, provided light is good, or any light if you have fairly static objects and a tripod.

Flash helps mostly when light is not so good, or with rapidly moving subjects. Personally, I do most of my macro shots from a tripod, with MLU, and a wired remote control. I do use reflectors occasionally, to lighten up dark spots or remove harsh shadows. I do make those reflectors myself; plain white cardboard, or cardboard covered with crinkled aluminium foil.

Kind regards, Wim

Wow, that is a crazy gear list you have there...

Anyway, I would anticipate doing most of my macro work the same way, from a tripod, MLU, POTN wired shutter release...

I've only got the 420ex flash right now, which doesn't have that last notch-down position for macro, and I'd rather spend my deflating US$$$ on glass right now rather than a 580ex II.

I've had a 100/2.8 macro for over a year, but until this weekend never really used it except for an indoor concert. After deciding that I was more comfortable with handholding than using a tripod, I upped the ISO and started firing: manual focus/exposure, burst mode (sometimes windy), f/5.6-11. Shot only flowers and ferns (no insects).

Great lens! Very sharp when I had the focus dead on and shooting in burst caught the subject not moving. In a 3-6 frame burst, could easily see which shot was the most in focus.

I'll post some photos when I learn how to do it.
