Ricardo, great stuff!

And yeah, it's great to get some off-camera flash going when you can!

I was able to get some OK shots of these tiny fast-moving ants hand-holding a speedlite:

You know, last year I posted one or two shots of a little spider that was hanging around my deck, but it just dawned on me that I didn't tell you guys about my "project"!

I had never done focus stacking before, so I decided to tackle it with the spider.

So, I took 5 shots at f/11, getting shots like this:

http://www.pbase.com/tonylong/image/138274231/original.jpg

Not terrible, but still typical of your shallow DOF problem:

http://www.pbase.com/tonylong/image/138274326/original.jpg

Fortunately, the spider wasn't moving all around! So, I brought 5 shots into Phososhop layers and came up with this:

http://www.pbase.com/tonylong/image/138274240/original.jpg

And, it holds together well for a close crop!:

Well, anyway, that's my story:)!

Thanks Genz...I used two off camera 580EX2 flashguns, both hand held. Because there are so many leaves in the way its quite hard to get the light just right, so I set the 2 sec delay, press the shutter and just aim the lights as I see fit. One is on an OC3 cord and set to master, the other is set to slave. Camera in manual.

I now have a bunch of babies and two large ones chomping through gum leaves in my kitchen, and pooing on newspaper on the bench!

That's great! I tried some with natural light (it was high noon!) and a few with a Rayflash ringflash. The one that I was half-way satisfied with definitely pales in comparison to your lovely shot.

Here was my best attempt. If I remember right, this one used my ringflash doohickey. I'm not sure what it is, but this guy had a powdery look to him.

Thanks for the comment, Tony...yes with macro, light is everything!

Man, those stacked spider shots are wonderful...you really made a great job. It's something I want to try some time soon...maybe this caterpillar will stay still long enough to let me try!

Wow...pretty good all the same. I can't believe how different the colours are!

I think that the ring flash gives are rather flatter light than is ideal for subjects like this...a bit of modelling helps define the shape better. For detail though, you've really done a good job.

Yowza, that one was just amazing. I definitely agree that the ringflash was too flat looking. I'd love to find somewhere less crowded where I could setup some OCF. I'becoming that guy that hates using on camera flash. I can see why canon didn't put a built-in flash on the 5D and 1D series ;)

It's amazing that you didn't have any movement. I tried to shoot some dew covered spider webs last summer and there was an ever-so-slight breeze and that was making it so hard to get just one shot off!!! Again, amazing shot. So many of my friends would be freaked out by the detail of the spider!

It's a species of wolf spider, but it doesn't look very well (i.e. dead!). What size are they where you live? They're only about 1" in UK, but I saw one about 3" in Turkey.

Madweasel, it was about the size of a penny (1/2" to 1") or so. It was dead when taking the shots. Getting focus is difficult at that short of focus distance! The DOF is so narrow. It amazes me the images people can get of flying critters!

Hey, the dead spider would have been a perfect subject for the focus stacking technique I brought up a number of posts ago!

I just got the lens, but I noticed handheld shooting at close magnifications is quite a pain. The hand-shake is amplified, you keep swaying so your subject ends up out of focus, and it's just better to have a tripod.

Yes, with reservations. Remember, more magnification equals more apparent movement, so you have to tame that movement and keep the exposure really short, just like with a long tele lens. Except that at high macro magnifications the light is usually dreadful, so you have little choice other than using flash.

As the recent discussion in this thread alludes to, off camera flash is the way to go. There are many ways of achieving this, and some are quite expensive. But you don't have to go that way as you can use manual everything, and as long as one of your flashes can work as a slave, and you can reduce it's power, then you can create some really fine setups.

Or, if only one flash is available, set it in a suitable spot, attached to the camera with an OC cord, and experiment with reflectors until you find one that fills the shadows to the right degree.

The important point to remember is that reducing the flashgun's power usually also shortens the flash duration, which helps with the hand-holding but means you may need the flash quite close to the subject.

Of course a tripod does make things easier, but when it's not practical just the flash will help you achieve sharp hand held shots.

I took mine to my daughters volleyball practice last nite to compare to my old 85/1.8. The gym was well lit and even at 1/250 I was auto iso to 600. I have to say the photos were a bit disappointing lacking alot of the sharpness you get close up with this lens. I got engaged in a conversation with another parent so didn't get to experiment as much as I wanted.

Do you think the lack of sharpness is due to auto focus, or shutter speed not fast enought to capture vball action?

Really did not get to experiment enough to say. Many of the shots were with the kids just standing there talking to the coach so I think the shutter speed was fine. I'm more thinking that maybe this lens is just not sharp focusing on subjects > 20 feet away for example. Maybe something to do with the way the optics are arranged for macro. My close up shots are incredibly sharp. The shots were in focus just not sharp perhaps due to the amount of cropping I needed to do. I even tried some with the minimum focus distance switch set to the longer distance.

This would not tally with my experience. I have landscape shots taken with this lens that are as sharp as any others I've taken. I suggest a checkup with some micro-focus adjustment procedure...or at least trying some distance shots at ISO 100 and a tripod, just to make sure it's the lens and not the circumstances at the time you took those shots.

There is good evidence in this thread for sharp pictures taken at a distance.

I don't think that 1/250th is fast enough to fully stop the motion and with the 85 it is a bit wider and you can hide that tiny bit of motion.
Is it blur or is it OOF? I will use it on a tripod at 60' and can still get vibration movement unless I go to cable release. I imagine you are shooting from at least 30'+
If I can nail the focus, it is sharp but not as much at 2.8. I didn't expect it to be either.

After further review most of the images were actually at ISO 1600 not 600. After my typical PP in Lightroom they sharpened considerably. Still not 'cuts like a knife' sharp as closer images are but very nice. In fact I like this focal length so much I just upgraded to the L version as I found a great deal on another site. This lens is already sold and on its way to another owner who I am sure will enjoy it as much as I have for the last 2 weeks.:)

1600 does kill off sharpness considerably except in the 5/1D.
The 100L is sharper than the non-L and at 2.8 using it as a telephoto your AF has to be superb because the DOF is very thin.
You probably would be better off using the 70-200 if you don't mind lugging that thing around.

I have an ongoing thread re: my challenges with a Sigma 150 macro 2.8 but will ask the now pertinent root questions here.

Do any of you brilliant minds out there know -
Do all macros suffer from the "loss of light" phenomenon as the focus distance gets closer?
Does the Canon 100L have effective IS at close distances?
Do either of the Canon lenses (USM or L) AF well at closer distances (say 2 feet)?
Do either of the Canon 100 macros with (third party) converters AF at even moderate distances (say closer than 1.6m (5')?

See the Sigma 150 Macro OS ~~ AF Issue? thread for all the gory details behind my curious questions.

Thanks,
Steve

It's much slower than the bare lens.. rocks back and forth a few time til it locks on. My Sigma 2xTC won't AF at all on it, though technically, it should.. it's @ f.5.6. The IQ is horrible though with the 2x, so i never use it. IQ is great with the 1.4x though. The lens focuses great..fast and quiet at shorter distances of around 2 feet; just make sure to use the focus-limiter for best performance.

Yes light is always a problem with macro distances.. the closer your lens gets to the subject, the less light finds its way in.

I have an ongoing thread re: my challenges with a Sigma 150 macro 2.8 but will ask the now pertinent root questions here.

Do any of you brilliant minds out there know -

Do either of the Canon lenses (USM or L) AF well at closer distances (say 2 feet)?

Thanks,
Steve

I don't have a problem at 9-12" focusing with a 40D but just with the focusing point. At that close, the sharp focusing DOF is ~1.5mm. So it is easy to be off.

Does the Canon 100L have effective IS at close distances?

See the Sigma 150 Macro OS ~~ AF Issue? thread for all the gory details behind my curious questions.

Thanks,
Steve

I just got my 100L yesterday after 2 weeks with the 100mm USM so not much experience yet but thats never stopped me before...

The 100L does AF focus better at short distances, there is a 3 way switch and you can set the focus distance to .3-.5M and AF will still work well provided you have enough light. The IS does work under all conditions and just adding the additional 2 stops helps keep the ISO down and workable in lower light than without.

However, those are the only 2 benefits I have found so far. From an IQ standpoint I noticed no difference whatsoever. The 100mm USM IQ is just as superb as the 100L IMO.

...Do all macros suffer from the "loss of light" phenomenon as the focus distance gets closer?....
Yes they do. For historical reasons it is known as the "extension factor", but it's caused by spreading the image circle as you focus closer. The same amount of light coming into the lens is spread wider at the image plane (and the sensor sees progressively less of it as you focus closer). There's a formula for working it out, which I can't remember, but I know you lose 2 stops at 1:1 macro ratio. Of course with TTL metering the camera allows for it, but you'll notice the changing exposure settings.

For small products it's fine. And it's fine for flowers, but if you're trying to shoot a backpack or something, you'll be pretty far back.

Are all EF 100mm f/2.8 USM made in Japan or are some made in a different country? I've read that for some lenes build quality can vary based on the country of origin.

I do sometimes find it a little long but not really an issue for me as I can work around it.

I tend to shoot 5D2/17-40L & 450D/100mm as an average when out landscape/coastal or urban exporing :)

Not that I really need another lens, but the sharpness and macro fun-factor combined with a reasonable $600 price tag makes this lens so very tempting. I have a 50 1.4 that doesn't get much use on my crop body, and I'm willing to sell it and put the funds towards the 100mm.

My question is, besides macro and portraits, has anyone found this lens to be especially useful for other purposes? Or have they found that it is taking the place of any of their other lens? Just wondering how it will fit into my current collection outside of the obvious macro capabilities.

I bought this lens to shoot macros, and I do enjoy macro shooting when I've got the right subject, but sometimes those subjects just don't show up!

But this is still a great lens even if you can't get up close and personal to the little things!

It takes nice shots of flowers, even from a bit away, and the pics enlarge nicely!:

When we go out doing the Urbex I like to pair the 100/2.8 with the 450D so I can keep the 17-40L on the 5D2 - Not always in the best places to be swapping lenses about.

ok... I need some objective advice. I realize this 100 macro is about half the price of the L version with IS. I only have one lens for my 60D at the moment since I just got it, but I shoot a lot of macro images with my G12. I'm thinking one of the 100mm macros will be my next addition. I don't mind saving for a little while longer to get the L but I'm trying to determine if I would benefit from the differences.

Does anyone have experience with both lenses? I'm going to ask a similar question in the L thread.

WRXTACY
27th of April 2012 (Fri), 06:57
You can ALWAYS benefit from IS. If you have the money go with the L. When I got this Macro the L didn't exist, but for me personally the price to performance difference between this lens and the L is not worth it, for me at least, thats my opinion. I think this lens captures fantastic images, may have to use a tripod but so what? Most Macro stuff you should shoot with a tripod anyway.

Cotmweasel
27th of April 2012 (Fri), 08:25
I also got this before the L, from what I understand they're optically the same, just the L has IS. Since I use a ring flash (MT-24EX) I really don't see the need for IS. but if you don't have a ring flash it could make a difference.

LeeRatters

I picked up an as new 100/2.8 for £230 so the decision was easily swung away from the L.

At the time I couldn't afford an L anyway & I don't find not having IS much of a difference really.

i really didn't like the EF100 on my 550D. On my "new" 5DC it's really great.
But on a crop sensor it's too long IMHO.

I would recommend to take a look at the EFS60mm which is great! But the best macrolens ever was the Tamron 60mm f2.0 ... awesome lens!
