Tripod and Patience. That's the two things I've learned are a MUST with this lens. Oh, and maybe a shutter release cable/wireless trigger, etc.

Tripod. Check.
Shutter Release. Check.

Patience. Not so much.

I've got a thing about bugs, bees, etc... so I probably don't get as close as I could.

This is probably my best insect shot so far, but I've still got work to do.

I wouldn't say a tripod is a MUST, but if you don't have a tripod you will probably need off-camera flash.

Patience... yep... need plenty of that ;)

Disagree about the tripod and shutter release. Have a wander through the macro photo sharing forum here. Overwhelming majority of the wonderful and best shots there are handheld. I'd have to say a tripod, for shooting bugs at close to 1:1, would be more of a hindrance than help. They just move too fast, on leaves/branches blowing in the wind. Just technique and practice. Totally agree about the patience.

The camera and lens, are the only musts. There are plenty of great, handheld, natural light macros.

The only other thing I would highly recommend, but wouldn't go so far to say it's a must, is a diffused flash - cheaper speedlite or more expensive ring/twin light.

Well, I've clearly got the gear to do it.

I just need to work on getting closer to the bugs, and the whole patience thing...

edit: Just a quick question regarding flash. I've never used flash with this lens. In fact, I just upgraded from a 420ex to a 580ex II a couple weeks ago. Anyway, 2 actual questions:
1.) Should I use my Stofen (tupperware) if I try this? I also have a homemade unit, the fun-foam and velcro variety.

2.) Would I be trying to use flash as my primary light source, or as fill?

If you don't have a flash bracket and off-shoe chord, you might be interested in my DIY milk bottle diffuser (http://piggo.com/~troy/photos/00_equipment/macro_rig/milk-diffuser.jpg) solution before I got a bracket. Works a treat. Just make sure the end of the diffuser is as long as the front of lens. No good if shorter. Can be a little longer without getting in view.

Also, for extra stability without using a tripod, see LordV's beanpole idea (http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=24569). I tried it recently with a broom handle and it really does help a lot.

Nah, probably not for everyone. I've got some serious shakes...so, I love having a tripod. low angle ones are cool, too.

I do have to admit I use a tripod sometimes for flower shots but for anything that is likely to run/fly away they are just impractical.

I believe it works just as well as the USM version as far as macro goes. Tubes will get you closer but you'll probably need off-camera flash.

Agree.

I also recommend a flash, especially in places with not so bright natural light like here in UK, and to those people with shaky hands like myself.

For still life macros then tripod and remote shutter release will help.

Oh, your dog is very handsome! Nice shot.

It's the face on that crab spider that is just plain creepy. The eyes & nose look more like a turtle than a bug. And I like turtles. I think they're cute. But seeing a turtle face on a bug is just not right!

For general hands-free lighting needs, I recommend a headlamp (like this (http://www.rei.com/product/771451)), but with a camera and flash up to your eye, it wouldn't be in the right spot.

Perhaps this tripod LED flaslight ($20) would be perfect for your needs:

I have an odd question...would this lens be of any use as a backup for my longer primes in situations such as low-light concert photography? I don't really want to drop $500 just to take photos of flowers and bugs...even though I'd probably be hooked on it once the glass arrived...

if anything, I believe that the 100mm macro doubles well, as a portrait lens...and is fairly fast. Just make sure the distance switch isn't set to .31m, and you should be good to go.

I, for one, would say that it works, but, I've never used it for that purpose.

As mentioned here in this thread this lens also makes a great portrait lens. So as long as the focal length works for you it will work for many applications.

That is a beautiful shot !

My comment about light has to do with macro work where the lens is so close it is blocking the light from the subject. The remedy for that is an off camera flash.
I think the lens will perform like any other 2.8 lens in low light. Johnathan

Cool shots! Perfect lighting on the bees (the wasp has some blown-out parts) Did you use any extension tubes as well? :)

So how is this lens for anything other than macro and potriat? Say... Motorsports? Any experience?

We use 300 and 400 and even 500 most of the time for sports, and those big lenses has f between 2.8 up to 4, so even 100 macro has 2.8 which is good, now there are two points:

1. Is 100 macro fast enough like those long prime, if not then ignore it, if yes go to point 2.

2. Is the working distance is good enough, because with 100 for most sports you will be really so far from those actions, so then it will be not good if you gonna crop about half of the frame or even more, sometimes even with 300 or 400 we crop something.

So if both points above are working fine with you, then why not? i saw i thread here where they used 10-22 for birds, lol.
