Hello All
I want to buy a new lest and I think macro is what i need
in my country the Canon lens are more expensive then Sigma or tamron
I have found a good offer for Tamron SP 90 2.8 but i dont know what to choose
Please let me know if is a big diference between these lenses ( canon 100/ sigma 105 and tamron 90) For me is important image quality
best regards

Better to post your question as a new topic in here (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=33) so you don't get a biased response.

Or simply do a search in that forum for those lenses. Similar questions have been posted before.

I was "busy" doing some bee shots and knew the hummers were around. Then he started buzzing around me and I shot him about 50 times. He really seemed interested when I shot him at high speed. He was within 10' and the greatest thing was when he turned the iridescent colors in his head feathers changed.
These are the true untouched colors.

Easy, I was trying to capture the bees on the flowers and knew the hummer was around. Then he came for a visit 10' away. He really seemed interested in the noise of high speed shooting which is why he was looking directly at the camera.

Nope...just the 100 f/2.8 connected to a 50D. That's not a 100% crop either. :) If I recall I was very close though.

Yeah, that'll definitely give away the secret. I've got so much help here, why in the world wouldn't I share it?

I took it at the ophthalmologist's office using one of their pieces of equipment for checking eyes. The hard part was getting the appointment to do it and convincing them to provide both a model and a technician to work the machine. :)

You will not be disappointed, it takes a little getting used to since at f/2.8 and macro distances your DOF is razor thin. Combine this with a Ring Flash and you never will run out of thinks to shoot :-)

Here's an example of a shot with a Ring Flash and the Razor thin DOF, this was taken at just the slightest angle but was hand held.

Macro is tricky in the sense of, "How big was it to begin with?" I'm sure those aren't tiny blades of grass judging by how large the drops are. I do not have the 1.4x, but I use the kenko extention tubes and they make a world of different. I bet the 1.4x does just what it says it does. Is it worth the cost? I guess we'll have to wait for porky101 to respond.

Porky101. Those are great shots imo. Very sharp on the drops and very nice bokeh.

The teleconverter increases your minimum working distance not your magnification. To increase magification use extension tubes. With all extension tubes on you can increase from 1X to 2X magnification.

The teleconverter increases your minimum working distance not your magnification. To increase magification use extension tubes. With all extension tubes on you can increase from 1X to 2X magnification.
If you phrase it that way, you'd have to say "it increases your minimum working distance at the same magnification". This because it magnifies (!) the FL, by a factor similar to the factor indicated on the extender or tcon. In principle, it should increase the WD with the same factor indicated on the extender or tcon in that case, potentially minus the thickness of the tcon or extender.

However, at the same WD, it does magnify more than the same lens without the extender or tcon. Add extension tubes, and put the tcon or extender between body and lens with tubes, and it still magnifies the amount indicated on the extender and tcon, on top of what the tubes give you.

Kind regards, Wim

hello there guys,

whoa sorry for not replying, i didn't know that this would spark such a big debate.

based on my own research, i was under the impression that the tc did in fact increase the magnification by a little (if i remember correctly, it was by the extension factor.. thus from 1:1 -> 1:1.4).

i haven't tested it out myself but from what i've been able to eyeball, it does appear to me that the magnifications are increased (could be wishful thinking, as my methods are not scientific in any sense).

in any case, the two pictures which i posted were blades of grass about 3-5cm long. they were not cropped at all, just resized for posting. if you guys are interested, here's a shot of an 100% crop that i took a while back (100% crop when viewed on the 1200x800 res, also with the 1.4 tc:

here's the full picture:
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y242/porky1011/_MG_7104_sml.jpg

again, referring to what newb2pro said, how big were the water drops to begin with? i'd be kidding you if i'd be able to tell you which drops were smaller ;)

Ah, ok, apologies. I tend to confuse people at times, it happens at work, too, especially when I get overenthousiastic :D. I need some help occasionally, to make my thoughts more clear.

Anyway, in short, I am saying that with a converter, you get greater WD at the same magnification, because the FL is multiplied by the converter.

And secondly, it does add extra magnification at the same WD, because of the multiplier factor of the converter, and this extar magnification is equal to this factor.

F.e., let's assume you use a 1.4X converter, and are at 1:1 with a lens, with a WD of 10 cm. At the same magnification of 1:1, you now have, in principle, 14 cm of WD. If you go to the WD you had before, 10 cm, you now have a magnification not of 1:1, but of 1.4 : 1.

I hope I made myself more clear this time.

Kind regards, Wim

^No, doesn't 'need' a tripod collar, but, I'm sure one might help, especially if you are using extension tubes, or your hands aren't steady (kinda like mine). I don't have one though...and just keep the cam. on a tripod, when natural light starts dimming.

Both shots hand-held. And I've tried using my monopod and think that's the way to go.

First shot shows the lovely bokeh, second kinda arty-farty use of pure colour.
Got a long way to go, but I love this lens, and find the AF to be as fast as anything, as long as it's nowhere near the macro area!!!

macobee, I really like what you're doing with these. What's causing the specular highlights on the first 2? Is that the work of the mirrors? I really like that touch.

Now, I'd like to see you push it further and open up the background for some depth. Make an environment out of it, but you can use DOF to keep the attention on the subject while adding depth.
