Curious, but was your focus point on the 'Canon' logo while shooting wide open? I'd like to see the lens sharp in that pic. as well as the Mark II label on the bottom left of the cam. Also, it seems there's a bit of noise inside the 85L when looking at the 1280x800 size.

Otherwise, it's a good artistic type shot, and once you fix a couple of things, it'll be perfect.

Cheers,
M.

The focus was on the Canon logo, but the aperture is F8.0.
Indeed, there are lots of things to be improved.
Thanks a lot!

BTW, it's 50L. And i guess the noise came from the low light environment of shooting. I really wonder how to produce the pleasant light on the lens glasses like the lens' wallpapers published by Canon on the web. Please show me how if you happen to know. Thanks!

I think you need light modifiers, such as a specific softbox. I've wondered the same thing...! I'll see if I can find something, later on...but, I'm sure it's in here, somewhere...!

And my mistake, about the lens...wasn't lookin' at it carefully. DOH!

I just want to share with those who are looking into getting a macro lense. Follow the link to find snowflake macro shots. The have been posted in the macro section already, but I don't think a lot of people will see it. I want people to see what a dedicated macro setup can do. The canon 100mm was involved in my setup.

how much more magnification does the 50mm on the end give you?...i've taken shots with a full set of tubes, and a 1.4 TC before...i'm wondering if a reversed 50 is a better idea though

It brings me up to about 3X life size. With tubes and the Canon 100mm macro I get 2X life size. I've never used the 1.4 converter, but a little bit of sharpening with the reversed 50 and I think the pictures come out nice and crisp. As you know the DOF is really shallow, but for the situation, it's pretty sharp.

DreDaze

after looking at this thread it seems as though the reversed 50 & TC both give about the same magnification...it also looks like the 100mm, plus tubes, plus TC, plus a reversed 50 would give close to 5X mag...haha...time to buy a reversing ring off of ebay...http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=578274

To tell you the truth, I had no take on it. I was simply sharing photos I took with my recently crafted/completed homemade DIY lightbox. Some of the images I've submitted to my stock-photography account to see if I can make an extra few chump change with. :D

There was no conscious decision, no rhyme or reason as to why I posted the images in that particular order. I just looked for stuff I had lying around the house that would fit into my box and I took snaps of it.

See, no story behind it. Told you your version was much more entertaining.

$31 seriously? oh, wait, $310...ok, so, I'm a little slow, haha. That's still a great lense and if you have enough room to back up, it's a great portrait lense too.

Not also just a great portrait lens, as long as you don't mind very sharp images, it's a great lens for everything.

At that price buy it for resale and make at least a $100.00. Sweet deal that will be gone if you wait.

This lens is wonderful for portraits as long as you have room! There are plenty of people who use it for that purpose. For tight situations, you still have your 24-60 to rely on.

For me, I can't bear to use my kit lens for portraits unless I have no room, because this lens is way too good! Here are a couple from me: -

Yes this lens will show flaws in skin more easily because of its sharpeness...but you you can always blur it. I'd rather have a sharp photo than a soft one! ;)

pridash, those are gorgeous photos!

Thanks!

Done another one today, as I had to test out my DIY softbox...fashioned out of an empty Amazon box and a couple sheets of A4 for diffusion - proper cheap! ;)

...Need to spend money on a decent one!

...BTW the original is sharper...for some reason it seems softer when uploaded to flickr and then attached here!

Thanks for the compliment!

...however, when examining the catchlight in the eye at 100% I can see there is a hotspot in the softbox & you can see the join in the 2 A4 paper diffusers: -

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3366/3264945752_ba350a57b5_o.jpg

It's probably because the flash head is too close to the paper diffuser. I think a deeper box will cure it in the meantime and perhaps produce a better quality of light in the absence of an ezybox! On a plus note, I guess the current catchlight looks a bit like light from a window!

Anyway, hopefully I can pick up a suitable box and A3 paper at work tomorrow.

P.S. Sorry to go off topic on this thread by discussing softboxes! ;)

Just out of curiosity, how close do you get to the subject to get shots like these with a 100mm macro? Seems to me that you'd have to be super close. Are these photos cropped in any way?

I'd love to hear comments on this from those with this macro lens. What's the avg shooting distance? How 'bout closest shooting distance (½ft? 1ft? 2ft? ) ?

I've been pondering a macro lens - I won't be shooting bugs or critters though - more likely to photograph small flowers or used for artistic compositions.

meh_meli
18th of February 2009 (Wed), 00:04
You can get fairly close to the subject ~7" for a full frame of a 3/4" flower uncropped and also use it just like any other 100mm prime. The 2nd photo could have been uncropped at about 5 feet

That would be a macro 'prime.' ;)
A zoom is a lens that has the capability to navigate through different focal lengths, say from 70mm to 200mm. A prime is a fixed focal length lens, ala the 100mm f/2.8 macro. :)

My dad passed a few years ago, and last night I decided to take a look at his camera equipment. I remembered he had a canon EOS film camera, but couldn't remember any of the lenses he had (b/c he never let me touch any of it, LOL).

Well, surprise surprise, I've got a 100mm macro now!

I've read and read about how sharp it is and I've been through this whole thread, but when I looked at my test shots last night I was FLOORED. I thought I knew what sharp was. I was wrong, haha.

I also found a Tamron 2x TC and attached the 100mm macro to it. Worked awesome! Still very sharp. A good bit of CA was introduced, though.

I've only taken indoor shots with my lens so far, and I've found that you need flash for every shot. I use a 430EX with a sto-fen diffuser. I'm seriously considering a ring flash b/c I got some Extension Tubes last night and I lost a stop or two so I might need more light.

For the water drop, I was pretty close, like probably a few inches from the clover. For the lemur, I wasn't that close. He was up in his tree and I was not within touching distance of him. He was maybe, 3-4 feet from me. The clover shot is cropped the lemur is not cropped. I used my (previously owned) XTi for those shots so I had the extra 1.6 crop factor making the 100mm a virtual 160mm which is awesome.

The 2nd and 3rd are very, very good. Very similar to some of the work I really like to do.

The first one though has some very distracting "stuff" going on in the background. I'm not sure if it is artifacts of some masking, or some severe halo-ing, but the background and to some extent, the stem, are distracting from the flower itself.

In the first pic I was trying to isolate the one lilly and in the background was an unopened bud and other stems and the odd leaf. The background was not fully black either as I think I had some flash spill over.

I thought I'd selected the whole background and brought it down to full black but then I got lazy and also just used a black brush over some parts. I didn't want to take out the stem completely as then the lilly would be "floating in space"!

But saying all this I couldn't see any artifacts at all in the background...although I am working on an uncalibrated monitor! Any chance you could point out where the artifacts are appearing - maybe even marking it on the pic, if that isn't too much trouble?

I'm at work on an uncalibrated monitor right now, but from what I remember from last night, in the upper left corner there were some serious artifacts on my display, I could almost make out like a tall upper case D shape of sorts. And the haloing around the petals and stem was very apparent to me.

One trick I learned from someone on here regarding cloning things out, is to take the final flattened image and increase/decrease levels to look for artifacts of cloning that may not be immediately apparent in the normal image.

Nice one, Tony. A 'can opener?'

Yeah it is, the topic for the "speed challenge" was a "common item". I took it without a flash to let the varied ambient light give it some color.

Some lovely shots on here,

How does this fare as a portrait lens? the wife's expecting a baby in July and am looking for a new lens to take shots of him/her with. I also would like to take macro stuff, so if it would be good for both i might be able to justify the price!!

This lens works well as a portrait lens. A lot of people use it that way. For one thing, it's very sharp (which at times can be a disadvantage for portraits):)!

Hehe, that's good news then, although i'm sure my wife wouldn't agree, after all we need to be buying things like cots etc and i'm searching for flash units and lenses!!

Good idea! I'll have a look later - thanks!
