Any chance you could point out where the artifacts are appearing - maybe even marking it on the pic, if that isn't too much trouble?
i didn't really even notice it at first...until it was pointed out...the main distraction would be on the left hand side...but there is some different coloring around the petals as well

haha, thanks guys. The dargon fly was pretty big, probably one of the bigger ones I've seen. That being said it was probably about 4-5 inches long. That ALSO being said, I used Kenko tubes (I think just the 36mm for that shot, all 68mm of the tubes for the wing shot).

You should be! They're an absolute blast. I put them on my 100-400L from time to time and that works pretty well too! I snagged this shot of a green anole (very common lizards here in FL (link only since this is for 100mm macro shots only).

That pic was taken from about 3 feet away from the lizard.
Back on the topic of 100mm macro's, do you have any if the lenses inside the camera are causing the blotches to appear? If not, then do any pictures taken of your other lenses have such defects?

I know this wasn't directed at me, but I'll provide some hopefully helpful advice for Arv.
If you want to quickly see if any of that is dust or smudges on your sensor, go outside, take some shots of the sky at small apertures, 16+, open your photos in Photoshop or similar and do an auto levels. Any sensor gunk will be readily apparent, and consistently in the same spots, no matter the what lens you used.

Thanks! Funny, I still couldn't see it until I stood up and looked down at my monitor at a very steep angle as well...the kind of angle I would never usually look at it!...I really need to get my monitor calibrated!!
At least in the meantime, if I'm cloning out things or making the background darker I know what to do to make sure that nothing remains. Thanks again!:D

I was maybe 4 inches or so. in this case it was a flowering tree, that has had around 50 bees on it everyday. So in the case of that tree, I just found a good set of flowers (2 or 3 bunches) and waited till some bees came close. generally speaking, bees wont bug (no pun intended) you unless you corner them, if they are annoyed they will just fly away. So I just stick to slow movements and take lots of shots. :)

Sounds like a plan, although I'm fairly allergic to them :(. I do wanna try to get a shot like that though. I was trying the other evening with some bumble bees (those big ones that sound like a small prop plane) but everytime I got within about 3 feet of the bush, they'd keep buzzing me until I backed off, so I figured that was their warning. I haven't tried with a docile little honey bee, although here in FL with the Africanized honey bees, you never quite know just what type of bee it could be...

it's kinda hellish...you have to be within like 1inch of what you're shooting, and the DOF is miniature...i get better results with my 1.4, and tubes...than with just the macro/50 reversed...i'll put up a pic in a bit that i just took to show you...

o.k. these are just some quick shots, that i set up of a dying flower
first shot shows the flower with just macro alone...not 1:1 flower is 3" wide from petal tip to petal tip, center of flower is 3/4"...the boxes represent where i think the second two shots with the 50mm reversed are from
honestly i have no clue how to work the lens with this reversed 50...what happens if you change the focus on the reversed lens and what not...but here's what came out...flash was off to the side held by me, as i don't have a flash bracket

I'm actually impressed with the detail you get. now that was JUST the macro and reversed 50? I don't have a 1.4x TC but just from the looks of it, I like it with JUST the reversed 50. I can tell a lot of light will be needed though.
Thanks for showing me some examples! It really helps with the decision process.

yeah it was just with my older version of the 100mm macro, and the fifty reversed
have you seen this thread it shows the differing magnifications...it looks like the fifty reversed is almost equal to the tubes...i feel like the tubes allow a lot more working distance though

yeah I ran across it the other day and found it fairly useful, but I definitely can't get that type of pic, especially that sharp of pic with the tubes at closest working distance so in that respect the 50 is much better.

I've done this 100mm macro with a reverse 50mm, from a couple of tests i've done it yields something like 3:1 ratio. But the problem is that the corners are considerable soft, stopping down the 50mm yields you heavy vignetting(i dont quite understand why though. Leave the focus on infinity with the 50mm, the focusing system of the 50(the 1.8 atleast) is very simple, it just moves the barrel away from the focal plane, thats really all it does, so if you set it to anything other then inifinity you get vignetting because that part of the housing at the end obstructs the light. As for the 100mm, I like to leave to focus to 1:1 because you get vignetting otherwise. It's fun to use, but can get very annoying for critical work, since you cant focus you got to move your camera back and forth. (oh and the amount of light you loose is incredible.
Also, these are both hand held.

That's because you shouldn't. The image forming part is the 100 mm, the 50 mm is used as a close-up lens (of 20 diopters), giving you an incredible 2:1 from the start. Stopping down a close-up lens essentially means introducing a mechanical vignet, unless the aperture is still wider than whatever the image forming lens sees. You can compare it to looking through a tube. The wider the tube, the more you see, and the less vignetting there is. The narrower, the less you see. And if it is so wide that the edges are outside of your vision, you don't get vignetting; you can't see the edges after all.
Because of the large magnification, there also is only very little depth, and at these magnifications every fraction of a mm counts.
Nice shots, BTW!
Kind regards, Wim

6th of March 2009 (Fri), 16:51
That makes crystal clear sense and I never really thought of it that way...certainly clears quite a bit up cause you're right, that's essentially all it is: just looking through a tube...a tube with aperture blades...haha

Yup, perfect explanation. I sort of thought it had something to do with physical obstruction but wasn't ever absolutely sure.
Just one little thing I want to mention, if you get a macro coupling ring, be very careful because mine got one and didn't want to get off of my 100mm anymore. And it was not because of cross-threading, I took it off with a special wrench but god that was annoying. (also I don't use any UV filters, if you do, the chances of this happening will be lower ofcourse.)

I remember I got a CPL stuck to a UV filter and I DIDN'T have the special filter wrench. I sliced my finger up good while trying to get that thing off. My lesson from that day? Don't put a filter on a filter in 72 degree indoor temp, then take it outside into 85 degree heat and expect the metal NOT to expand, haha

Hey 100 Macro gang, I've been messing with stuff!
I was comparing using stacked tubes with the idea of a reversed 50 f/1.4 that I held against my lens 'cause I didn't have a ring. It seems like the field of view is somewhat the same (when stacking a 36, 20 and 12 tube) although the MFD with the tubes is longer, that is, with the 50 on there you have to get extremely close.
Is this correct, those of you who've tried these out? Is there a practical advantage to the reversed 50 that I'm missing?
Thanks!

I can't really answer about the reversed 50, but I just got a set of tubes last week and played around with them a little bit.
This gallery shows some of the samples: http://photos.kodanja.net/p158353433
With all 3 tubes and the 100mm macro, I had to get the lens within about 1" to 1.5" from the subject to focus correctly.

Looks like you may have a bit of cracked die on that nickel right through the 2. I've used this setup to take pics of my growing uncirculated 20th century type set. The pics can be seen here: http://coins.www.collectors-society.com/registry/coins/SetGallery.aspx?PeopleSetID=56634
I used a homemade light box with 2 100watt lights (one from top, one from left of center) with the 100mm mounted on varying amounts of tubes.

this was my initial thought on the reversed 50mm
have you seen this thread it shows the differing magnifications...it looks like the fifty reversed is almost equal to the tubes...i feel like the tubes allow a lot more working distance though
Thanks!

Nice, thanks for the tip. I went to Ritz to see if they had one (why bother, they never have anything I need, anyway...) and they just looked at me like I was stupid. One person actually told me they didn't make such a thing and that it would mess up the camera if you COULD do it...fun stuff.
But yeah, thanks again for that link! I'll have to see if they have a 58-52mm

I really don't have an issue with it, it really only comes into play if you shooting right at 1:1. I have tubes that I can use for closer, so it's no big deal.
That being said, I also have a 1.3 crop camera that I use for the Live View utility with some macro shooting. Either way works with me, I just grab the 5D more often for "casual" shooting because it's more light/compact/portable than my 1DM3.

Thanks!

This is a macro lens so by definition it focuses CLOSE up. When you are a few inches away from your subject you are now dealing with razor thing depth of field.
I've got plenty that aren't cropped and this is one of them

CPL filter for 100mm macro: Does it have to be SLIM?
I am planning on getting a CPL from B+W for my 100mm macro. SLIM fliters are necessary for wide angles to avoid vignetting. But I guess it will be alright with a standard CPL for the 100mm macro (or my 70-300mm zoom that is also 58mm wide). What do you think? Please advise asap. Thanx!

I use a $20 Tiffen CPL and it works fine. This isn't a wide angles lens so it isn't an issue. At the same time I am using a Crop Body that could be different with a Full Frame but again this is not a wide able so it should be fine.

After having done the obligatory orchid post elsewhere in this thread (HERE (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?p=7269913#post7269913)) I would now like to say how great this lens performs as a telephoto on low light situations. I took it with me to Jazz Club Fasching here in Stockholm and got some amazing shots, very sharp given the circumstances. Here are a couple of pics. The first of guitar player Oz Noy enjoying himself, the second of tenorist Seamus Blake blowing the heck out of it. Both at 1/100 f/2.8 ISO1600.

Still not sure if this lens will get enough use from me though as I also have a 50mm 1.8 Mk1 on the way and also have my eyes on a 17-55mm 2.8 as a walk around lens.
Convince me I should keep this or is it just too 'specialized' to keep unless macro is my thing?

Well, spring here in the Pacific NW is typically another shade of damp grey. It's drizzling outside as we speak, and a few days ago it was trying to snow in the middle of the day.
The best month of Spring here, I think, is May because we actually get some very nice days. Until then, they might as well have a prerecorded weather forcast that just says "90% chance of rain":)! And that would apply pretty much for nine months of the year!
That being said, there is a lot of beautiful stuff in this region:)!

You're by Bellingham, right? Pretty much the same as us but a bit more, right!
