can u use this lens in macro functions at 100mm? if so.. how away from a small subject like a butterfly can u be to see the effect of the 1:1 over a standard 100mm lens?

Since it is a prime, it will always be 100mm. To see the 'macro' effect take place, you may be within .31 meters of your subject. There is a focus limiter switch on the lens, that allows you to change from 'macro' mode to 'regular' mode (@ 0.48m - infinity). Hope that helps.

Boy is this a tempting lens to pickup, just so many great shots both macro and otherwise.

I was wondering about the macro shots of insects, do these require a specialized flash like the macro ring lite or can you get away with a normal speedlite? If outside with good light can you do macro without any flash?

Tristo,

Thanks for the quick reply. Good to see there are a few flash options with this lens, as the ring lite is quite expensive considering I'd only use it with this lens.

Totally awesome shots showing off what this lens can do.

Thanks

While I do have a Ring Flash for my Macro and don't use it that often. This is an example of a pic without a flash. This is a great lens and I've had great results with and without a flash.

It is supposed to be a fairly sharp portrait prime lens that also can do as a bonus 1:1 macro. It is fairly rare when I do some macro shooting that I have to pull out the ringlight, I have used it a few times as a normal flash rather than using the camera flash.
I would like to buy a faster lens than using a flash but that is me. ( ie. I don't know how to use one properly)

how close do you have to get to the bugs to get these kinds of shots like the spiders and bees and flies, etc. i was thinking you'll scare them off by getting too close.

spiders: depends on the spider
bees: no, they're not afraid of anything
flies: yes

Generally, just try and try and try. Using a flash also helps, either on a separate tripod or so, with extension cord or remotely operated, or a macro flash.

For flies there is a way to cool them off a bit to slow them down. Something like catching them in a glass jar and putting them jar and all in the freezer for a few minutes.

Kind regards, Wim

Just as a news bulletin, I will be getting a 50mm 1.8 in the mail Monday and got the reversing ring today, so I should have some reversed 50mm macros up soon! Can't wait!

Actually that image wasn't cropped, just resized for web posting (ditto with the bee shots).

Wow. That is a great shot. How did you get such close focus? Thanks. :) The bug was cooperative and wasn't very skittish. I waited for it to land on the flower and fired away (that shot was actually the best out of the 15 or so I took between yesterday and today). I was at or very close to the minimum focusing distance.

Well I finally got the 50mm and the reversing ring, but honestly its incredibly hard to use! Much harder than I thought it would be and I think its simply because you have to be so close to your subject. I was surprised to see that you have to be about 1.5 to an inch away and coming off of using tubes with the 100mm where you could be about 3-4 away, this is darn close!

Does anyone have any tips/tricks using this method?

Ok .. how did you soften those images below? Tell me now, I must know ;)

Annnd, thus ends the search for my macro prime .. It's gonna be this 100 f/2.8!
I'm tired of reading, tossing and turning and flat out head-aches .. sheeeesh,
I used to own boats, and those were money pits .. this switch from 6x7 format
to digital, along with all the bells and whistles is flat out burning my wallet ..

Alas, it'll be the 100 f/2.8 as most all of the filters I have are 58mm.
I was gonna get the 50mm 2.5, but then I'd need to re-invest in more filters.
So, I guess that's a plus .. anyyywayyy .. who's sellin one? I'm ready, now, lets do it!

Great shot Mast3rChi3f! Gotta love the detail this lens gives even after cropping!

I was going a bit macro loco this weekend. All pics taken with 100mm macro, Kenko tubes, and 430ex mounted on customized flash bracket.

4. Apparently a Psorophora Cyanescens, but I just call it the big @$$ mosquito

Great shots Goincarcrazy...but seeing that mosquito makes me glad I live in the UK! We only get the "normal" ones here!

BTW, how did you them so still? Did you by chance just get them at the right time/right place and then bring up the background in post? Or did you chill them first before placing them on paper?

Actually it was like 11:00pm when I took the mosquito shot, and seeing how slow he was moving, it was a prime opportunity. It was about 66 last night at that time so he was probably a bit chilled as well. If I don't find the bugs naturally, I don't shoot em. I don't want to fake a pic to that extent, plus it adds to the challenge.

The mosquito shot was taken on my fiances white garage door, the other two were taken on a friends (inthedeck on here) window framing (nice white surface as well). I'd love to get something in my light box but with the lights on that thing, they'd cook and die in no time, so if I can get a white surface, I'm pretty happy, plus it makes things a bit easier to spot.

Two Two Ring Shots

Got my first wedding for a couple of years this weekend. Took a couple of ring shots whilst I was having the pre wedding meeting with the B & G. They were insistant on both rings being included in the shot.

Lit with a mini maglite (2 AA version) with the lens taken off to provide a non-focussed light.

Wonder how it is when used for low light shots as a normal lens.

Yeah, it was damn near black - pretty cool, and the only one I've come across in the neighborhood.

Keep playing with the lens and remember to stop down when you're focusing on anything inside of a couple feet - the DoF gets realllly thin, and the DoF Preview button comes in handy. Also, if you're used to shooting wide open, like me, you'll have to be more aware of your shutter speed when stopped down; I'm used to shooting at ISO 100-200, with this lens, I'm more in the 400-800 range (available light, handheld) to keep the SS acceptable.

Here's a couple from this morning - it was a little windy, so I was having a hard time with DoF/sharpness with all of the blowing about -

Any reason why you didn't use your flash?

I find using the flash on those windy occasions helps you get so many keepers and avoid having to up the ISO. The last flowers shots I done on my flickr page (already posted here) were achieved with the 580 on cam during a windy day.

Yeah, I have a reason... I didn't have it with me!

I tend not to carry my flash with me when I walk around the 'hood, but I have been eying the macro flashes... I dunno... any flash adds so much weight on the strap, and it just makes the whole assembly more unwieldy.

When I finally do drag out the flash, do you have any pointers? I'm thinking tilt forward at about a 45 deg with a bounce, but I have no clue...

At macro distances you really want to try off-camera -- carry an extension cord, and you can position the flash for the best reach.

BTW, flash is also useful for little critters when you're trying to get closeups of them as they're skittering around.

Yeah agree with the above, but last time I just had it on cam and it was perfectly fine, although I wish I had a diffuser with me.

A macro flash would be the ideal but lots of those who post on the macro section use a speedlight either on cam or off with absolutely amazing results! So save your money for something else, like another lens.;)

Really like these a lot...
But you might want to tweak the white balance a bit.... That first shot is awesome but it's definitely got some tungstan lighting that's making it too yellow. If you can tweak that in ACR or DPP or whatever, it would make it even better (imho). Or if you allow image editing I'll take a crack at it...

Certainly adequate lighting (flash preferred) will help bring out the detail.

I did a reverse macro (reversed 50mm)with my point and shoot and the detail in the eye was easy to bring out - view it here (http://www.flickr.com/photos/pridash/1288717566/in/set-72157600954054645/). I believe extension tubes do something similar.

I haven't tried, but I imagine that for action shooting with AI Servo you will find the AF will be too slow to respond well. The range from about 6" to infinity with no intermediate limiter will occasionally cause it to swing wildly to find focus. You might do OK if you first focus manually to an approximate distance before the subject comes into focus.

If you have the lens and want to try it out, just try panning some moving cars in AI Servo and see how it does.

wimg

Do you think that half a foot would make a big difference in how the lens focuses?
Yes, because it is the half a foot that requires more movement of lens elements for focusing than all of the rest.

Up to 48 cm, assuming it stays the same focal length, it requires a move of 26 mm of the lens in the lens tube. From 48 cm to 31 cm, it would require another 74 mm were it not that it is an IF lens. Even so, the relation between the first part and the last half foot would be about the same, about 1 to 3, and that only for the last half foot :D.

Kind regards, Wim

I think the Canon MP-E 65 can get superb detail in insects eyes.. I have never owned a macro lens so i wouldn't know much else about shooting macro. But that lens is 1-5x magnification. I think the 100mm macro is 1-1x.

Somebody quote me if i'm wrong :)

My baby Girl

shot wide open

That is quite the framable and hangable shot!

Those tulip shots are quite nice as well. Love the colors!

How does that affect how the lens works? And more importantly, how does that look?!

Wow! Nice shot Mehran!

Well, it just screws onto the front thread of the 100mm via the use of reversing rings so your lens performs as normal, including AF.

Looks wise? Kinda long and a right PITA to use as the slightest movement renders the subject out of focus! Plus you have to be literally about a couple of inches from the subject.

I haven't got a photo of my set up but you can view an array of similar rigs that the macro photographers here use on a dedicated thread (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=142566). Some of them are spectatcular - with extention tubes+100mm+reversed rens+blash bracket+2 flashes!
