I'm fairly new to the dSLR market myself having picked up a Canon 40D about 6 months ago. At the moment I just have the 17-85mm lens that came with the camera (and have been looking at the wonderful shots people have been taking with that lens in the relevant thread).
I'm now looking to get a macro lens and actually looked at this one in a shop here in Korea the other day. After getting a bit muddled with advice from different reviews on the Sigma 105mm, 150mm etc etc I think I'll be going for the Canon 100mm. The pictures you guys have taken with it are outstanding, and hopefully with a lot of practice I might be able to post something on here one day that's not too bad! :)
Beofre the 40D I had a G7, so it's been a bit of a steep learning curve. Not helped by the fact that I'm lazy when it comes to reading manuals and/or tips. Loved using the macro on the G7 though, which is why I'm looking at a lens like this. At the moment I pull out the G7 for close up shots, which seems a bit stupid.

If you want macro shots you need to start thinking about the depth of field. If you just point and shoot your 40D you may not get these results. The DOF is slim with the 100mm 2.8 when shooting macro and you may want to look at some of the EXIF data on the pictures to help give you a starting point if macro is going to be your game.

Thank you, I'll check out the data on the pictures to get some idea of what's required. I use the 40D in manual mode for the most part, but alternate between forgetting to turn on the camera and forgetting to take off the lens cap still! haha There's obviously still some way to go

I seem to be in a bit of a predicament. After looking through the majority of this thread Iv'e just just about fallen in love with this lens. :D
The problem that comes up though, is I was looking to get a new lens for my Hawaii trip in June. I was planning on going with the Canon 18-200mm for an general walking around lens. And after reading through this, some people have stated how the 100mm isn't the best to take on trips/carry around. And Im worried it wont do the greatest at night time. So I guess what im asking is, should I go ahead and purchase the 18-200 first, for the trip? Or do you think the 100mm will do fine.
BTW-the only other lens I will be bringing is the 18-55 kit lens.
Thanks for the help :)

I don't know how one could compare a 100mm prime to a 18-200mm zoom. The 100mm certainly wouldn't be considered a candidate for a walking around lens. However you have the added bonus of close-focusing plus macro for the wonderful Hawaiian flora.
I'm curious about how you came to the conclusion that "it won't do the greatest at night time." It is a wonderfully sharp 2.8 aperture lens while the the 18-200 is only 3.5-5.6, which is very slow on the long end.
It certainly isn't as versatile as the zoom but combined with your existing lens, you're only losing the 100 to 200mm length. So,If you don't think you'll need anything longer than 100mm it should be great, but your 18-55mm should be your walking around lens.

If you already own the 18-200, why bring the 18-55? Same 18-55 part, and same IS.
If you don't own it, I would get the 55-250 IS instead, to have a slightly bigger range in combination with the 18-55 IS. If you don't really need the long end of this range, I wouldn't hesitate about buying the 100 macro, it is plenty long on a crop, and I am pretty sure you will have ample opportunity to use it on Hawaii :D.
For night shots, I don't think either is all that great, and for the price difference between the 55-250 IS and the 18-200 IS, you could buy a 50 F/1.8 II, which will be much more useful for low light shots, if you ask me.
Kind regards, Wim

14th of May 2009 (Thu), 17:44
I'll second what Wim suggests, the lit lens with the 55-250 will give you a great range at a budget. You have broad vistas with the kit lens, and with the long lens you have a crack at surfers and birds. And, for another $100, you get low light with the 50 and it's very compact.
Of course, if you really want to devote time to tropical flowers the 100 is ideal for that, so a lot rests on what you are motivated to shoot. If you're a flower nut and surfers and birds interest you not a whit, then the macro could serve you better!
Myself, if I were to plan a trip to Hawaii, I'd want every lens in my arsenal, but that's just me:)!

I would just like to point out. that the kit lens zooms to 1:2.5. Which is almost macro range. It likely would be fine for general flower shots...

Thanks for everyones help. Idk why, but I thought I remembered coming accross somewhere in this thread about how people didn't like the results they got in lower light. But I think since I know Im going to be buying this lens sooner or later, Im going to go ahead and purchase the 100mm, and stick with the kit lens for now.

Haha, yeah I tried to be a good citizen and order one online from Australia but they were more expensive by the time I got it delivered here.
I'm teaching English here at the moment. It's a contradiction in terms really in my opinion, but once you get the school day over and done with it's not too bad going for a hike and taking some pictures. After spending time with 40 kids in a class it's much needed relaxation time.
And I am a fan of The Castle :D I heard Bud Tingwell had passed away and thought of him in that straight away. I've made it my mission to show the movie to as many people as I can in my travels, so I've watched it a lot of times. I have it here with me in Korea.

Only if you are looking for the 1:1. You just have to look at the IQ and figure it out yourself, it is nice to be able to do macro and then shoot something else at distance without changing lenses.

I agree. THE macro lens to have, in the true sense of macro photography would be the MP-E, but the light needed, and the changing of the lens for anything less than 1:1 gets quite annoying...so yes, the versatility for of the 100 rules!

Benon,
There are two other Canon alternative for "true" (1:1) macro work . If you are shooting a 1.6 "crop" body, the EF-S 60mm macro lens actually is a nice lens. If you are shooting full frame or a 1D, that is not an option. The other alternative is the EF 180 f/3.5L. It has the advantage of a much longer focal length, allowing you more distance from the subject.
The other alternative would be the 50mm f/2.5 "compact macro", which is only 1:2 but is small and light, and with either tubes or the "life size" converter can expand the image.

Totally different lenses, so I would say yes. With this I mean that if you do like the 135L, rather get the 100 macro in addition, not as a replacement.
If you don't like the 135 mm FL, you may like 100 mm, which is the traditional portrait lens FL on FF. In that case, you may want to replace it with either of the two 100s, or maybe even both, or the 200 F/2.8L and one of the 100 macro or 100 F/2. The 200 is a great lens for candid portrait photography on FF.
Personally, I like both the 100 and 135 mm FLs, and they serve slightly different purposes to me, although they do have a lot in common, subject wise.
Kind regards, Wim

thanks Wim. I've owned the 200/2.8 before and loved everything about it so i might pick that up instead although the macro feature is really neat and i'd love to have that lens. it's not really a question of which focal length is better or more suitable, i was mainly leaning towards IQ between the 3 (135, 100x2).

Have you tried using an extension tube with the 135L yet? It is not as convenient as a dedicated macro lens, but does work very well, indeed. I even use it with extension tubes plus extender, for even larger magnifications.
I reckon the 100 macro is a better lens than the 100 F/2 is, unless you need the extra stop. This based on the 85 F/1.8 rather than the 100 F/2, which supposedly perform very similarly. I also reckon the 135L is better than the macro, except for macro, although as mentioned it will do nicely with tubes too.

7 weeks until my bundle of joy comes, can't really justify the outlay at the moment though. Even the 60mm version seems to be real pricey :(

I really wish the focus had hit the bee's eye but even in AI Servo, it missed ever so slightly - just a breeze at the wrong time. Nevertheless, I liked the shot. 5D, macro, 580EXII w/ Lumiquest softbox.

This is a stupid picture... But look closely, does that look like a 100mm f2.8 picture? Well no it does not. And technically it isn't. It's more like 40 100mm f2.8 pictures. Who needs a 50mm f1.2 when you can do this?

My friend vaguely told me about this technique that he had heard about so i sort of thought of it and it's so logical and simple.
K so the deal is that if you take a 100mm lens, you go up close to your subject so you get very narrow DOF. Here the pictures are framed in a way that there is about a quarter of the heatsink fits in the frame. and from there I just snap a bunch of shots around it with the same focus setting and exposure. and when you stitch these together you get a wide shot of your subject with a narrow DOF.
Edit: Photoshop has a wonderful tool for stitching them called Photomerge

I get what you're saying! I thought you were talking about photostacking and I was like, wow...crappy stack, but I get it. Snazzy technique. photomerging 40 pics would definitely kill my computer though, haha.

I really want a lens wich is very capable of doing portrets. Main pupose is marcro of course, but it would be nice if it can do a lot of other stuff. How is it performing when shooting handheld portrets inside the house?
So what can i do with this lens other than macro?
Does this lens has infinity focus?(sorry if i misspelled or misprased that), but i think you will know what i mean.
Maybe someone can shortly explane me what the magnificationnumber 1:1 means, and how is this number i.e. at a 18-55IS kitlans from canon, so i can compare that? I did some great insect shots with my kitlens....
Thanx for answering!

Well, yea it could be a problem. But believe it or not with some cooperation from the model you can even do portraits this way. It's a quicker than it sounds. But yea forget sports or parties or anything like that.

You can use it for portraits but you might need some lighting indoors. You can use the lens for anything you want, just remember it's a 100mm lens so everything is going to seem a lot closer. :-)

Those were all shot with the Canon 50D with the 430ex on a flash bracket tilted out towards the front of the lense with a homemade diffuser on the end of it (a fanned out cut up popcan covered with a paper towel). Although, I've been having trouble with the flash giving me full power shots when unwanted. I've been told it's a bad flash connection...but I'd love to be able to get consistant lighting like those again.

I've had this lens for a while and have found it nearly impossible to take a good handheld shot. It's been a bit frustrating. I know part of it is that I have a hard time being completely still. But this lens has given me way more trouble than any of my others. I don't believe I've taken a single good macro shot. The only decent shots I've gotten were when I used it as a telephoto.
Any tips for me. It's my first macro lens. Before this I've only ever done macro on a P&S.
I don't have a flash yet. I have a tripod, but most of the time I'm trying to get images of insects pretty close to the ground. So it's not usually usable.

^^^^get a flash
after i got my old version of this lens i instantly realized why everyone uses a flash...when you stop it down to get more DOF you lower the shutter...which just to prevent hand shake will need to be around 1/160 or so on your 450D...let alone moving bugs...even if you can't afford an off-camera flash...at least just use the on-board one, I think if you adjust the FEC then you can get shots that don't just scream "taken with onboard flash"
good luck

I might have to. I really want to do macro. I'm probably gonna start with a 430EX. One of my car windows stopped working unexpectedly and I had to spend over $500 because the window parts were supposedly rare. So that's on my credit card now. Once I pay some more of it off, my next purchase will be a flash.

White foam board, and the right light, will also net you some decent shots. ;) Easy, in a pinch, or when strapped for $$'s. :)
