That was the first thing I thought also. The Rebel seems to be behaving as though it has AI servo. What was the shutter speed?

without the exif I'm guessing around 1/320, certainly quick enough to freeze the bird and slow enough to give the water some movement.

Thank you for your comments Paul, Peitolm, Mike, richardmincher, Dimitri and Jim. I was not going to show it since it needed light. It's pretty dark in the river edge.
