I'm seriously contemplating sending mysely to the big photo op in the sky..... I really blew it today !!!On my way to work I passed a factory with a truck in the garage door totally engulfed in flames !! No cops, no fire trucks, just three workers with their noses pointed in the door scratching their heads...I have been keeping my camera right in the passanger seat at the ready for just such a moment!
I grabbed it, turned it on, pointed the camera and click, click, click.....click, click, click.....Yes I got it! at least 10 good shots....I am just full of myself on my way to work again...I'll have great shots for the local paper, I'll demand a press pass for these photos...wall hangers.... I get to work, flick on the camera and press the view button...no images! What ...No CF card in the camera. Aghhhhhhh......I had been helping a girl at work yesterday check her camera , see if the cf card in hers worked or was the camera broken ...she still has my card that I stupidly did not replace ........ However, why do these cameras refuse to take a photo in so many cases but still click away with no card installed....My fault but I'm "having a buggy" about it !! PS, for a good photo op go to the Bucksport bridge tonight at sunset as I throw myself off! ( I promise to wave on my way down!)  :o  :(

No way Peachman!! I feel your pain!

There is an option you can select which won't let you shoot if there is no CF card in the camera. I'm pretty sure on the 300D it's a custom function which becomes available with the Hack. If you haven't installed the hack yet then now's the time to do it!

I installed the Wasia hack on my 300D the best part of a year ago and have had no problems at all since. The added features are great. I see you have a 420EX, you will love being able to dial in Flash Exposure Compensation when you have the hack.

Just did a quick search for you, this looks to be a good thread.

Cliveyboys post has lots of info and links which look good. FWIW I used the Wasia (Russian) firmware, but the Undutchables has good reports too.

When you take the CF card out, leave the door open. Don't close the door until you put a card back in.

This is the worst case of bad luck -and its because you were playing the good samaritan re the CF trouble with your friend.

Oh well, another day, another fire perhaps.

Oh well, another day, another fire perhaps. Ya, the old saying "no good deed goes unpunished" has been rattelin' 'round my brain all day!

Oh well, I've decided it is just a message to stay ready, 'cause there is a big shot (even better) coming my way!

I know how you feel. One time I took an out of state trip with our son for school. I knew the route we would be traveling so I planned on taking lots of pictures of rail yards between Michigan and Ohio. I even sat in a special spot I had picked out on the bus. When we were a good hour away from home I flipped the camera as I was getting ready to snap the first set of pictures. NO!!!!! My CF card wasn't in the camera! It was back home along with every other card we owned! So I carried my full and very heavy camera bag around all day for no reason.

peachman i have been using the wasia hack for about 18 mos or longer with no ill effect whatsoever.in fact i have only noticed improvements.i do have it set to not take pictures without flash card, and this has saved me a few times already.this only saves you assuming you have cards with you.which i usually do. i was comforted in knowing that i could easily revert back to the old firmware without any problems. i too was afraid to make the leap to the hack, but i couldnt pass up on the enhancements it offered.just make sure battery is fully charged before doing it,and have the original firmware downloaded in the unlikely event that you want to revert back. as for me i will never go back.

I'm going to the big Wasia as my weekend project ! Thanks for the info and suggested metheod of application of the hack! And yes, I had 8 CF cards in my back pack (which is always with me,), 3 extra batteries..all my lenses, my 29 gig card reading mini portable hard drive , card readers, monopod, 2 manuals, AA batteries and multipal 12V adaptors...just an empty camera and empty brain I guess !

Lol.

So far I have managed to avoid doing this.

My problem is that I only have one CF card and I always fill it up with pap before something intersting comes along meaning I run out of space :)

Example - at an airfeild car day, wathcing various modified motors flying around, and get loads of snaps of most people. I then ran out of card space when two guys in black Sierra Cosworths come out and drifint all over the airfield. Which was what I had been wanting ot capture all day :D

I need to buy some more cards....

With regard to forgetting to put a card in, I have got into the habit of checking the camera before I leave the house - I find thats much easier than just assuming I have a card in there...!

You know what's worse than that? Doing it not once, but TWICE!

You would have thought I would have learned my lesson the first time, but nooooooo.

I went to the Cubs game last year, taking pictures of Mark Prior when CRACK! The batter hit one that bounced off his arm! I think I got it! I thought, but kept clicking away at the aftermath...

When I went to check the pics in the review screen it said "No CF Card". I was pissed!

Press Passes are only given to those with Cards in the camera.
