Aah the memories, sheltering from the rain, the smell of cigerettes and urine and of course needing two people to open the 80lb door.
nice pic of a relic.
p.s. I also think thery're dissapearing fast because half the british themed pubs in the us seem to have one.

That is sad... Same thing with the double-deckers. :(

Oh, plenty of double deckers - just not the jump on, jump off Routemasters.
Too dangerous to the environment and to passengers apparently.
Bollocks - forces you to pay attention...
Red phone boxes are all gone from Islington, they are replacing some of them with similar-styled, but black/slightly more modern ones, but it's not the same. :(
I',m 23 and I remember the old red boxes. Like routemasters, it's part of Picture Postcard UK and it's all disappearing :(

Ahh okay, that's what I was thinking of - the Routemasters.
There's a bunch here in NYC still making the rounds. I think they wanted to get rid of them here, too.
Definitely postcard UK!

Yeah, they fittted a few dozen routemasters with newer Cummins, emissions freindly engines to get over the emissions problems, then, IIRC there were a couple of people who were [I want to use a far more offensive term but I had better not] complete bloody idiots who fell out the back of the Routemasters as they were moving and threatened to sue or summat, and Transport For London have now pretty much withdrawn them all, and replaced them with nice new double deckers [which are actually pretty good!] and those bloody bendy buses [which aren't - hate using them].
Not a lot that can be done though I suppose. :(

What about the contests to see how many people can fit into the phone box?

Those double-length "bendy" busses are scary for sure. I don't recall ever seeing any on this side of the pond, and if so - in very limited numbers. Could be worse - in Australia I understand there are "truck trains" or three semi-trailer long trucks cruising across the Outback. At least there's nothing around out there.
Here in the States it's the same way with people wanting to sue over anything and everything. You have your fun until some idiot ruins it for everyone! ;)

The whole lawsuit mentality came over from your side of hte pond anyway so I blame you. Personally. It's all your fault ;)
I just don't like any form of tranport that shows less stuctural rigidity than a diluted jelly. Makes me feel terribly uneasy.
I'm also terribly concerned about what would happen in the event of a wet/icy road, and then throwing in lift off oversteer. A normal car will fishtail badly enough, I dread to think what an extra five tons would do to the arse end flailing about....

They were talking about getting rid of the London cabs last year and replacing them with mini people movers. Hope that idea quashed?

As far as I know, yes - I haven't even heard of that and I've been working in the City for over 18 months and lving around here for three years.
If they get rid of black cabs there would be rioting on the streets and we would overturn our opressors and live in a land free of turmoil and poinless political correctness
[or at least the Mayors office would get some nasty letters :) ]

Ah I rememeber now - it was proposal to allow licensed cabbies to use mini vans as an alternative to the black cab. It was only in the news for a week or so. Main concerns with the black cab were the costs and its turning circle which isn't really a problem if the cabbies used better judgement than doing u-turns on Oxford Street.:)
