Like all Canon EOS cameras, the G5 Powershot locks focus when the shutter is half depressed, then releases the shutter when the shutter is fully depressed.

I am an outdoor photographer, and recently decided to purchase a G5. It was terrific. Images are very sharp. The option of deleting
less-than-desirable images on the spot, is a big plus. I love that lens.

After a couple of trips to a forest site, and then to a coastal site; the G5 started fooling around.

Half-depressed, focus locked. Go all the way down...nothing. Try again. Half-down, focus locked. All the way...NOTHING. On a third try, flawless. On a fourth...NOTHING.

Any of you have had this problem? Or is it possible that I have change some of the settings?

Never had anything like that.

With the camera off, press the button slowly several times and see if you can feel anything mechanical.

I don't know of any setting that has a lock-out, but if you push too rapidly while the camera is still writing to the CF card (green blinking light), or another function hasn't completed, the shutter can be delayed, and if you release the shutter button because of the delay before the shutter go off, no pic.

I know what you mean. the shutter lag.

Its not that. Ithink it has something to do with the fact
that (in the manual, it says that) this camera is not even
weatherproofed.

salty air. dust. a bit of spray. more likely the culprits.
why? I tried applying pressure on different points, e.g.,
right side, left side, front, rear..and found that I got the
darn shutter to work on the right rear side, but no where
else. this is not right. I mean, a shutter should work
fine when you depress firmly, period. Right?

A bit disappointed, seeing that i have been a very loyal
Canon user for 30 years now. And have dearly loved,
and profited handsomely, from the sale of my photos.

Well... it's not a 1Ds, but that sounds like a simple switch problem. There a number of electronic switch sprays that might be enough to blow out whatever is in there, clean the contacts and put you back in business. You might press the button firmly and grind around in a circle a bit and get the contact back that way.

I've carried my G2 to India, La Reunion, Bali, Malta, Greece, Seychelles, all around Europe where I live. Through jungle, in vulcanos, on boats, airplanes, cars, you name it. I've taken many thousands of pix with it in all kinds of wearther. Not a hitch, not a problem. A scratch on the bottom and lots on the lens cap, but otherwise in perfect shape.

My G5 is now getting the same, plus a bunch of macro stuff.

No complaints here.

I think I've had this problem. I take one pic, fine. I go to take a second, it focuses on semi-depression...I full depress and nothing happens. It will happen 2 or 3 times before it might work again.

It doesn't happen too often, I wondered if I was trying to take a picture too quick after the first...
