I am just curious as to what other people most often use as thier standard settings.

Usually I have my film speed set to 100 by default and often forget to change when needed until after the fact.

Also, I noticed in the paramerters settings I can adjust sharpness and contrast among others and am wondering if most use the "standard" setting or are using one of the custom sets to add a little sharpening or contrast in the camera.

The more I learn about figital photography the more I realize how little I know.

For general purpose hand-held shooting, I use Av mode and set the aperture so that I get a desired depth of field, and then change ISO to increase light sensitivity so that I have a reasonable shutter speed. Obviously the shooting mode will change depending on the subject and scene, but this is my stand-by mode.

So far I have kept the other settings at their defaults.

Playing with the "dummy" modes, I've found that the sport mode works fairly well, and that the night portrait mode does a decent job too, even with back-lit subjects.

I will usually start a days shooting at ISO 400,.. it helps with wildlife hiding in the shade,. when things get too dark and the shutter speeds drop,. I start to bump the ISO up,.. that part for me is easy to remember ,.. as I simply won't get the shutter speed if I don't,...

Where I forget is the other way around,.. there have been many a time where i have forgotten that I was in a high ISO setting and plenty of light for shooting at ISO 100....

I usually shoot in "P" mode,. as even then I can roll the aperture or shutter to my liking.

I keep the the focus set to AI focus 90% of the time and switch to AIServo when I know I need it,.. like birds in flight (if there is time)

I have shot over 10,000 images with the 10D without adjusting the parameters,. (except I shoot Adobe 1998rgb)

but I am now experimenting with some of the in camera tweeks. (remeber these adjustments only effect the jpegs,. they do not alter your RAW images at all)

I have bumped up Sharpness, Contrast, and Saturation,. each up one notch.

So far I am not displeased with the jpegs,... but I need to do a little side by side comaprison soon.

I use normally the aperture mode.
And when using flash fully manual, because when operating in the other modes the Aperture will stay to low.

I currently use Adobe rgb in AV or TV modedepending on what I'm shooting. Right now I've only had the camera for a week just shooting whatever crosses my path and it seems any color adjustments you may want to make is best done on a full size calibrated monitor and with Adobe products. This camera has alot of tweaks but for the average photographer use your basic skills and let the camera do the rest.

ISO is important and dependent upon shooting conditions and the apeture setting of your lens. If Ihave time I put my camera on the priority mode look at the settings and and then the image that i just shot I see if I have to make adjustments. Av if i need a greater depth of field and don't forget that there is a Depth of field auto setting on your camera as well. Focus lock on point 1 the foucs lock on point 2 and recompose picture holding shutter button half way down and then shoot. Don't be afraid to experiment. Braket your shots if know how.

As for sharpining I would be carefull, I use the standard settings on the camera. My own personal opinion but, an image that is too sharp looks as bad or worse than one that is out of focus. I am more concerened with the proper white balance and a good shutter speed so get a clear sharp image to work with after I shoot .
