I just got done looking at press releases on Canon's US website and was startled to learn that they are planning a September release for a digital version of the Rebel. According to the press release it will be 6.3 Megapixels (hmm that sounds familiar) and will sell for about 999.99$!! I am a D60 owner and about a month after I bought it canon released the 10D for about 1000$ less. Now they appear to be dropping the price dramatically again. Also, according to the press release, this new rebel will have items such as a batter pack made exclusively for it. So I guess you can't use the battery pack from your D10 on it. I guess my big gripe is....when is all this price slashing going to effect the 1Ds? With the price of canon's 6.3 megapixel cameras having dropped almost 1750$ since the release of the D60 I'm thinking they also need to loosen up on the 1Ds. Of course that's probably just wishful thinking on my part. Anyway, I'd love to hear ya'lls input on this subject. Take care and stay safe.

I would recommend having a look back through the forum, this topic has been covered extensivly.

1. Digital Rebel / EOS 300D is already out. DO a google search for it.
2. Canon have carefully marketed the new EOS 300D for a totally different area of the market, so the EOS 1DS, the 1D, and the 10D will NOT be affected and they will NOT have to cut the price. It makes for bad economics if a company releases a product that will affect pricing of their other products, all that can do that is the price of the competition.

OK,
Both the 10D and the new Rebel have 6.3 megapixols. Both use the same 7 focus points, both use Digimarc. Explain to me again how they are marketed to different areas. They look like the same camera to me. Maybe a cosmetic change is all. If there is a significant difference I'd love to know about it.

David, as Richard said, a little searching on this, and other photo forums will reveal to you quite a substantial difference between the 10D and the 300D. As an economist I can guarantee you there are quite major differences that cause the 10D to be currently sold out round the world at $1499 for a body even though the $899 body-only Digital Rebel is only a month away. If many (most) people thought, as you do, there was no real difference between these cameras, you'd be able to pick up a 10D at reduced prices with no wait. A friend of mine is waiting 4-6 weeks to get a 10D, and yet is very happy that I am getting a 300D when it's available. He wants a better camera than me.

cheers,

I hear what you're saying, and I'm by no means arguing with you. However, when the 10D was introduced, for about a grand less, a month after I bought my D60 it kinda made me wonder. Based on this experience it doesn't seem quite so unrealistic that the price could drop additionally. Anyway, I just wanted to discuss the tipic and get others input, which you have both been very helpful with. Thank you.

The 10D was a significant improvement over the D60. Better body and significantly better performance.

The Digital Rebel is a downgrade of the 10D. Plastic body and fewer features.

The 10D replaced the D60; the Digital Rebel targets a totally different market.

As others have said, search the posts and reviews and you'll quickly understand the differences.

I guess I should begin with the disclaimer that I am a photo hobbyist who has outgrown my Canon G2 and am looking for a digital SLR. I'm no professional....

Like bigsexy I don't understand what the significant differences are between the 10D and the digital Rebel, and I'd really like to understand it.

I was prepared to pay $1,400 for the 10D until the Rebel was announced and since it seems to have the same major features as the 10D, the decision to save $500 on the Rebel should be simple. I'm not an economist but Canon almost realized an extra $500 profit before their introduction of the lower priced SLR and again I see no MAJOR differences which command an extra $500.

After reading the threads, I've come to the conclusion that something hasn't penetrated this thick skull of mine. From what I can tell, the 10D has a few extra features which must be very desirable extras for the professional photographer. But when it comes to the things I thought were important, I see few MAJOR differences.

I can understand the advantages of the magnesium body, but do the pro's often use the custom color temperature settings for white balance? What about exposure compensation and flash compensation at 1/2 or 1/3 steps versus just 1/3? What about selectable AF modes in P, M, Tv and Av modes? And finally how often are you shooting in the range of 1600 to 3200 ISO?
Other than that, I see no MAJOR differences.

Am I missing something? Please don't flame me too badly.....I really want to understand the MAJOR differences.
