I'm using 30D and the file number are all mess up after I swap in a CF card with picture taken from another canon camera. The file number jumped a few thousand and the folder number changed too... It's not a big problem but kinda annoying. I thought the camera itself keep check of the file name and not based on the files in the CF card.

No, the camera bases the next file number on the greater of the file number last used by the camera or the file number on the current card. If you reclaim a card with the proper numbering sequence, you can use the Manual Reset file numbering option to start where you left off. This is new with the 5D/30D, and is one of the unheralded bonuses of the new cameras for people with multiple cards and cameras.

I thought I tried many different things included manual reset. I guess I just didn't do the right combination. I really thought I did a manual reset and the "right" file in card.

Doing a manual reset won't help if the card has a "bad" file number on it at the time. Manual reset with no card in place, then inserting the card with "good" file number should do it.

The camera remembers the number it had reached UNLESS you put in a card with different numbering. So, the easy way to avoid this if you use a card in two different cameras is to simply format the card in the camera before using it. Then the file numbers will run continuously for that camera.

Sometimes you can't do that. Last weekend I went to take some soccer pics. My card went out of space, so I borrowed a card from my sister which has pictures in there that I can't delete.

I thought the folder name was different and would be ok, but.... you know... I ened up like this.

Frame number gets updated as soon as you insert the card, and a reformat in-camera at that point will simply remember that number. Reformat in the computer is the only way to clear all file numbers and folders before insertion, and, as noted, isn't alwways possible.
