Can some one tell me what the self timer is used for and should i use it at the 2 sec delay or the 10 sec delay.

The self timer is used if you want to delay the shutter release, for example if you want to make a photo of yourself. You set the timer to 10 secs, focus to where you will sit/stand, press the shutter button, (normally a light will blink, or a sound will be heared during the 10 secs), go the the place where you want and wait til the timer releases the shutter.

Another example for using the timer is if you want to make a night shot. If you press the shutter without timer, this will move the camera slightly and the picture will be blurred, if you set the timer to 2 secs and press then the shutter button, remove your hand, the camera will take the photo 2 secs after that and your hand will not shake the camera and the photo will be sharp (best use a tripod or set the camera on a wall or something)
