Question:

Is there an advantage to setting the resolution of you images to match the printer? If so, how does one know the printer resolution and is the bicubic resolution adjustment in PSE2.0 good, or should I pick up a stand alone applet?

The simplest and easiest is to work on whatever you prefer to get out of your camera (Jpeg L or RAW for example) in PS and save it when you are happy how it looks and after any cropping. Don't bother changing DPI or image size. Then, the best bit, is get a copy of Q Image to do the printing. That's it, a simple work flow and the results are excellent.
