Hi there,
just have to say, ive been reading and admiring all your work and hopefully learning how to use my recently purchsed 400D, after seeing some great shots with the 24-70's i opted for the Sigma, now having seen these wondefull pictures i have just pushed the button on this lense,:D

Does this lens work fine on a 1.3 crop?

pheelfresh
22nd of October 2007 (Mon), 07:30
MaDProFF: I think it will work, but the lens is designed for the 1.6/1.5 crop factor cameras. You will probably experience some severe vignetting at the low end. I tested it on my 5D and it was unusable from 16-17mm down to 12mm. I can't say for sure how it's gonna perform with a 1.3crop camera though. Would be advisable to look into a different lens.

And aximrocks, those were some pretty nice photos. Loving the second one.

do you guys ever feel like you wish you had 10mm? im considering trading my 12-24 for a sigma 10-20 :(

Very, very rarely. I'd say maybe one in 150 shots. There's very little you can do with 10mm that you can't do with 12mm if you are good at planning composition.

I will say that I use the 24mm end far more than I ever wish for 10mm, so the extra 4mm on the long end is more important to me than the 2mm on the wide end. Heck, at 12mm, I was able to get the entire John Hancock Center in Chicago in the frame, and I was only standing 25 feet from the base (considering the Hancock building is 1127 feet tall, that's pretty darn close). I had to use the diagonal, but I think the composition is more dynamic that way anyway, than if I had 10mm and just lazily did another vertical.

I went the other way around. Had the 10-20EX (fine lens), then ultimately went with the Tokina 12-24. Both great UWAs with their respective strengths.

Hey, I want one as well! What do these things run, and will they work on a FF 5D?

They will work, but not below 16-17mm. I don't recommend the Tokina 12-24 for the 5D. If you're looking for wide angle on the 5D, check out the 17-40L or 16-35L (mkII preferably). 17-40L is a steal really.

If putting a 17-40 (using the 17mm end) on a 5D, would it produce the same UWA effect as the 12-24 on a 350D?

Multiply 12-24mm range by 1.6 and you get a FF equivalent of 19-38mm. So no, it wouldn't be quite as wide as the 17-40 on the 5D. I have the Tokina along with the Canon 17-40L and I love them both!

I just want to see if I was expecting too much in terms of IQ.

I love my 12-24 as well - but I've not captured anything (yet!) like those Walter! Those are just amazing. I'm beginning to really like Tokina. I bought (and sold) the 11-16 and it was just as amazing. Even more so along the edges. I sold because I decided to sell my 17-55 as well and wanted 12-24 coverage (up to my 24-70).

I'm really deliberating over selling my 24-105 and going with a Tokina pair: the 10-17 fisheye and the 50-135/2.8. I know the 10-17 is well-loved but it seems the other is not mentioned much.

Do realize that 17mm fisheye to 50mm rectilinear is a HUGE gap. 17mm fisheye is SIGNIFICANTLY wider than 17mm rectilinear. In fact, my 12-24 picks up more or less where my 10-17 leaves off.

NorCalAl
8th of July 2008 (Tue), 10:30
That's why I'm keeping my 12-24 and 24-70. With the possible addition of the 50-135, and my 100-400, I should have no gaps.

The 10-17 is just a creative addition - plus, I've seen some of your shots with it and I love the look!

I haven't had it very long, but so far love it! I have only owned one other lens with the AF to MF switch like this and it was a sigma 105mm macro and it was nothing like this. This is super smooth fast and easy to switch to MF and to actually do the focusing. The AF makes a small bit of noise, but its barely there, kinda cool really. Everything seems to be fine with mine. Now I just have to get used to a wide lens :p

Oh, as far as quality goes, it is by far surprisingly awesome! Very solid and confident, not very different than that of an L. Not better or worse than one, just different.

Just a quick couple of snaps while I am getting used to it:

Talk about an awesome lens. Light, sharp, and relatively inexpensive!!

Is this lens fit on a FF?
The Tokina 12-24 is an EF configuration, not an EF-s, so it should fit the FF bodies. I have the 40D and the 1D Classic and it fits both of them fine. I don't have access to a FF 5D or 1Ds though, so have not tested it. When you go to the B&H site, it does not have the notice about it only fitting the 40D though, like other EF-s lenses do.

The Tokina 11-16mm will not fit though, as it is an EF-s configuration.

Important Notice!
Only fits on the EOS Digital Rebel series or 40D, 30D & 20D SLR cameras

It fits, but it doesn't work properly until about 18mm. Otherwise, you get the black edges. It does say on the box that it is for Digital SLRs.

If you do the math, then that is better than either the 1.6x or the 1.3x crop bodies. On the 1D, at 1.3x and starting about 15mm for vignetting, it works out to 19.5mm. For the 40D at 1.6x crop and at 12mm, it works out to 19.2mm. And on a FF of course, it works out to 18mm at 18mm for vignetting. :)

Yeah, I research every lebns I buy endlessly before I buy it. Took me a year to finally decide on the Tokina. I got to handle the 10-22 and put it on the body and mess with it a bit in the shop, and the same with the 10-20. I wasn't impressed, especially with the price. Sorry, they both just felt plastic. Then a member here that lives close offered to send me his Tokina 12-24 for a test and some shots. No hurry. It took me a day of using it and I was sold and ended up buying it. It's my most used lens now, my walk around and it just performs flawlessly. I don't see a downside to it all and it is well made, silent and very fast to focus. Just a great lens and even more so for the cost. Better, it's not an EF-s mount, meaning it will also fit my 1D. It doesn't get any better than that. :)

I recently went to Hoover Dam for the first time. My wife and I were looking forward to the tour, but security is tight these days, so I wasn't allowed to carry in a backpack full of gear. I had my 10D and 2 of my Tokies (16-50 f/2.8 & 12-24 f/4) with me but I had to choose one for the tour... I decided to go with the 12-24 figuring that wider is better. I also decided to go without my 580EX... I knew I was taking a risk. Here are a few of the photos I got:

10D/Tokie 12-24 f/4 combo at 12mm, Av=f/8, Tv=1/400, ISO=100. Hoover Dam as seen from the observation deck of the visitors center.

10D/Tokie 12/24 f/4 combo at 12mm, Av=f/4, Tv=1/30, ISO=1600. This is a photo was shot through glass. It's the top of one of the 30ft dia. pipes that guide water to the power plants... the tunnel itself that the pipe is in is 50ft in dia.

10D/Tokie 12-24 f/4 combo at 12mm, Av=f/4, Tv=1/5, ISO=1600. This photo was taken hand held... it's one of the tunnels that we were guided through as part of the tour.

Mitch- -- I have always respected your opinion when it comes to bird photography (and photography in general), and decided to pull-the-trigger on the Tokie 12-24.

So for use only on a FF, would you go with the Tokina 12-24 or the Canon 16-35?

I would suggest the 16-35 for FF cameras... yes the Tokie will fit, but it will vignette badly. On my 1D MkI, to prevent vignetting... I would have to use it from 17-18mm on.

canonloader
15th of December 2008 (Mon), 06:41
The 12-24 is wider angle than a 16-35. If I want wide angle, I would go with the wider lens. Quality of the Tokina is not an issue. It's all metal, focuses fast and silent, and it's cheaper than Canon lenses, by a lot. :)

My new 12-24 arrived, and I'm very pleased with the initial photos.
Unfortunately, it's below freezing ouside, and my home is a far cry from 'spacious' architecture. However, I experimented with some inherent features of an UWA in my home gym.
This was probably my favorite shot from the session. Extreme DOF is easy to obtain. The sports towel is about 12 inches from the lens, and the heavy bag about 12 feet. :D

These photos were shot in RAW format and PP'd with Aperture. During PP, I did a little bit of work to boost the reds... this lens takes great photos, but I felt the reds needed more "pop". I just hope I didn't take it too far.

Just got mine today $332 shipped from ebay. No box or manual.
It's very soft at 22-24mm from f/4 to f/4.5 (with haze and dreamy look)
But once stopped down to f/5.6, it's sharp across the entire focal lenth. (Still not as sharp as Tammy of course)

The build quality is the best I have seen in non-L class.
No USM but it is not loud at all. I actually like the high pitch focusing sound. :D

This beast is wiiiiiiide. The lens hood was almost TOUCHING the mirror!

Great lens...not perfect, but very serviceable and workman like lens. Usable at f/4 but nice and sharp at about f/5.6 onwards

Here's a crappy sample from the 5D Mark II (at 12mm...vignetting from the reduced image circle and hood stops at about 19mm because this lens is designed for a APS-C sensor not a FF sensor) (Don't let the poorly exposed incorrect WB photo put you off the lens though, this is for illustrative purposes only):

If you guys are using a lens hood, that could be the reason. It could also be light fall off from using the maximum aperture of the lens.

Is this thing able to be used on full frame?

Sure can (from about 18.5mm onwards - see my post on the previous page) :D And it looks sharper as well due to the generally lower pixel densities of current FF cameras vs current Crop cameras. However, the downside is that CA is much more visible at the high resolutions of current FF cameras like the 5D Mark II

Here's a handheld FF shot on a 21 Megapixel 5D Mark II, using Standard Settings:
http://dawei.zenfolio.com/img/v6/p628344883-5.jpg

And a 100% Border Crop of the lower left. Note the Significant CA. The shot is a bit oversharpened by the Standard Picture Style's Sharpening but note how good the resolving power of the lens is, you can see the words "limited" and if you squint can just make out the words under the number plate:
