Insane! They let you carry an SLR in there?

Disney has no problem with cameras of just about any type... even dSLRs. If you do a search, there is always someone asking "what/which/how many lens(s) should I bring?" I haven't been there in years (either Disney World or Disney Land), but my next trip will include some of my gear.

Hi!

I bought this lens today, but all pictures of anything more than 3 feet away are extremely out of focus, UNLESS I use the middle autofocus point. All other eight focus points on my 50D give out-of-focus shots, the whole picture is like bokeh.
Same with manual focussing, works until 3 feet away, but when set at infinity and shooting something far away, everything is out of focus. Apparently I can only use the middle focus point. Never experienced this with any lens before. Is this normal?
Thanks!

PS SALT that shot is magical...

Hmmm, never thought of that being a problem. Because the lens has such a spherical contour, the focus points other than Center might give strange results. I only use center point focus for everything, so never noticed it.

It's still dark here, so I can't try it at any distance, but when it get's light, I will. :)

I did test mine and while it was not as sharp as usual, it was not like bokeh either, even at f/4.

Thanks, it appeared to be a camera issue, which must have occured at about the same moment I bought this lens. Now suddenly other lenses can't focus with outer focus points either. Camera is under repair.
Sorry for blaming the lens, just stupid coincidence...

I've learned to give up "keeping up with the latest gear"... whether it's worth the extra $100 or not is up to you, but IMO, if you have the MkI version and it makes you happy, then why replace a perfectly good lens? Those who are now just looking into this lens, you have the option, buy a brand new MkI (as long as they are available) or MkII or buy a used MkI... as you can see from the samples here, the MkI performs great, but how much better does the MkII performs???

I think the difference between the new and old version is a motor for autofocus for the Nikon D40 and D60 which means nothing to us Canon owners and a new multi-coating to help with flare and ghosting.

Just got mine today from B&H and WOW!

All the comments/reviews were bang on. The colors, contrast, and sharpeness of this lens are even better than I was expecting, and the build quality is really great.

Couple that with the bargain price of the Mk I ($399 @ B&H) and I feel like I got a real deal.

Here's a shot of my favorite test subject taken 12mm 1/50 @ f4:

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b102/Hailwood/IMG_4904a.jpg

And another of one of our miniature lemon tree 12mm 1/13 @ f4:

I really like the mild perspective distortion and the fantastic center sharpness.

These are really nice pics everyone

I'm getting interested in this nice lens

My question is
I've never had a UW lens, The wider lens I've used is my 17-55IS

Is 12 mm that much of a difference?
I love the perspective that one can get with this ultra wide approach, and I get close with my 17mm on my 40D

Will this Tokina accentuate this FX?

Thanks

canonloader

The Tokina 12-24 is a true Ultra-wide. On the 1.6 crop body, the 40D or 50D, it will not vignette at 12mm. The beauty of this lens over the Canon 10-22 or Sigma 10-20 is that the Tokina also fits the 1D and 5D bodies. However, you will see vignetting up to about 15mm. You can crop it out, but it's there. The real selling point for this lens though, is build and image quality. There is nothing third party about it. ;)

Oh, by the way, if you have seen the effect of buildings leaning in towards the top or out, that is caused by user error or on purpose. If the lens is held perfectly level, this does not happen. Buildings or trees leaning in at the top means you leaned the camera back to get more sky in. Leaning it forward produces the opposite. The same effect applies to subjects like long walls. Tilt to the right or left of perpendicular to the wall and one end will pinch down. :)

Never got to try one, but it's advertised as "Not compatible with 35mm or digital cameras with larger image sensor than APS-C size". Have you actually tried it?That just means it will vignette. If you go to the Tokina site, you'll see similar language there for the 12-24, "Digital single-lens reflex DX lens_ dedicated to digital SLR cameras with APS-C sized sensors."

canonloader
29th of June 2009 (Mon), 14:19
I did some searches for the Sig. The reason the EF-s lenses won't fit the 1D or 5D is the rear end stick out too far, hit's the mirror. The Sigma is like the Tokina, short, so I guess it fits. Just never tried it.

I am very tempted to bite the bullet on this lens, more like experimenting with it than really need a UW

The price tag and performance ratio looks like a winer,

Will I miss having 10mm instead of 12mm? or is just not that big of a deal onece you get used to the 12mm?

I've been wondering whether or not the 28mm short end of my Tamron lens was enough for any landscape shooting that I might do. After this past weekend I found that it fell way sort and so I needed to get myself a good UWA lens. I've been watching this thread for a while and so it made the choice quite easy for me...I ordered one of these today. Can't wait to attach it to my 40D and see what it can do. :)

Thanks - this was handheld. F 4.5, 1/40 ISO 400 24mm. I love the Tokina for handheld interior shots. One the wide end you can handhold it to 1/15 or 1/10, provided decent technique. The only fault I would say is that you're not going to get great shots of people at that speed, but if you're focusing on architecture, no worries!

Albeert, you need a GND filter for shots like that. It will really help.

My lens suddenly has aperture sticking. It's stuck at f/5 and won't open up or go smaller aperture.
Took it to the THK at Huntington Beach, CA two weeks ago to get it fixed. Cost about $75 total.

What you don't see is the BMW SUV & Jaguar convertable in the garage that accompany the Mercedes and Porsche in the pictures above. Must be nice to be loaded!!!
Speaking as an Englishman I find such ostentation rather gross. Good pictures though.

i own the 2nd version and from the looks of my first few pictures, i like it a lot more than my brother's 17-40L. obviously it fits my aps-c sensor better as an ultra wide angle, but the color, contrast, sharpness are as good as the 17-40 except maybe in the extreme corners. really happy with this lens!

Hello

Wondering if this lens AF is fast enough to take motorcross pics & should I go for the 11-16 2,8?

canonloader
13th of October 2009 (Tue), 13:47
AF on this lens is not the fastest. I use a Sigma 105 Macro lens for MX, which is not Canon fast either but might be a bit faster than the Tokina. I was just at a MX race last weekend and used it all day. It takes great shots and is fast enough to catch them in the air as seen here (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=765400). These were shot from about 15-20 feet away, too far for the Tokina.

Thanks but are there any wide-angle lenses who is fast.

I,am thinking of

Sigma 10-20
Canon 10-20
Tokina 11-16
Tokina 12-24
Tamron?

I have only tested the Canon 10-20 for a few minutes, a couple years ago and on an older 30D. It was not as fast as a prime lens, but faster than the Tokina. However, let me explain about the tokina 12-24. When I said it's not the fastest I meant it will take a second or so to focus from minimum to maximum focus. If your shooting at the races and you pre focus to the distance your going to shoot at, the small change you will need to focus on a bike going by will be quite fast enough. I did use my Tokina at the races, but the wide angle made the bikes look too far away, which is why I used the 105.

Ok thanks, I got a racetrack were one of the curves I can get very close about 1meter. I tested my Sigma 18-50 2,8 but with fast shutter. but I want more wide-angle not fisheye.

Well, my Tokina was definately fast enough to catch a passing bike, as long as the lens was already focussed at the point on the track the bike would pass. :)

Craving something wider than my 18-55 IS kit lens, I bought a used Tokina 12-24 f4 for my Rebel XS last week. Have to say, its pretty awesome!

Here are some early shots. One thing I really like about the UWA is that you can handhold at relatively low shutter speeds and get good results.

On a suitable camera that can take both lenses, how does the Tokina compare with the Sigma 12-24? Do they both give the same angle of view? I have the Sigma, but having a FF camera I can't use the Tokina.

The Tokina 12-24 for Canon uses an EF mount, not EF-s. It will fit the 5D.

Yes, but it'll vignette badly in the wider half of its range. The Sigma works throughout its range. I just wondered if anyone had tried both on the same compatible body?

Looking at this lens to be my gap filler between 16-24mm. Have considered the 17-40L also but the overlap seems too great with my 24-70. From what I see the two have similar performance, being both f/4 lenses. Have the faster 11-16 for any low light needs, and know that this is also a quality lens to compliment it with a bit longer reach.

Thanks. If you're ever up that way, visit Lincoln Minster and photograph the fan vaulting in the ceiling. Ideally after dark when the exterior floodlights shine through the clerestory windows. It's truly ethereal. I used to sing there many years ago and had the run of the cathedral, and I have photos I took back in the '70's either in spaces closed off to the public which you wouldn't even suspect existed, or inside the nave late in the evening when I'm the only person there. Just me and my camera. I'd LOVE to be able to do that again.
