Ditto. I have largely gone full frame (and 1.3). But one of the reasons I hang on to my cropper is I don't want to give up this lens:confused:

Great images, Hailwood. Especially like the first and last. I've heard New Zealand is beautiful. I need to add that to my bucket list.

I used to not like UWA settling on the 17 range, but now I'm having trouble as lots of the tings I'm trying to shoot are tighter spaces and am needing something wider. I wasn't too happy with the 10-22 I borrowed. It seemed a little too wide. I bought a used 12-24 from someone here and while it seemed good, at the time I didn't use it enough so I sold it. Now I'm thinking of going back to it. But i see so many of you who posted here no longer have the lens.

If I shoot in somewhat tight spaces is 12 wide enough? 17 was only a little too long, and I think I'd prefer the 24 over the 22 since I do tend to shoot mostly from 28 to 105. I just need this for maybe 25% of my shooting, if that. I'm worried it's too expensive for such little use.

Before I got married, I sold my Tokina 11-16 and Canon 17-55 to free up some fund to make some deposits on rentals. I told myself that I was going full frame, so I didn't need these lenses. Lo' and behold, we're in no financial position for me to upgrade to a full frame set up. But I miss my wide angles. See my signature and you'll see that 30mm (on a crop) as my widest.

The 12-24 offered a good, inexpensive alternative to repurchasing the two lenses I let go. It covers my wide angle needs, although it's not as fast (and now I also see not as sharp, either). The 12-24 gives me a more usable range than the other "equivalent" options.

I won't get to shoot till this weekend. Hopefully I can find something.

Thanks! Is there any others of landscapes though? It's kind of hard to tell how it'll work in real world settings. I liked the 10-22, but only at the longer end, from maybe 15-22, but I need wider then 15 for the stuff I'm shooting now. (With my back, getting down real low to get some foreground stuff in so it's not just a horizon is difficult, so i find the 10mm too much.)

There are some local waterfalls I'm trying to shoot and 17 is just a tad long. I've talked to a few photographers who say they use the 24-105 on FF and it's enough, sometime they say they wish they could go to 20, so I'm assuming the 12 will be wide enough.

At the Pittock Mansion where I first tried the lens the other afternoon, I learned that a 10mm might be too wide for me.

Any wider than 12mm, and I think that the Fisheye almost seems like the lens I would turn too.For the present, I'm glad to have bought the Tokina 12-24m rather than the 11-16mm.

Here's one from OMSI yesterday in Portland using the 12-24mm @ 15mm ISO 1600, f/5.6, 1/50 sec

Although its pretty dark in the redwoods, I still got some keepers from this past week. Thought that the roots of this hemlock looked pretty slick. Its trunk is higher, as it grows on the side of the bigger trunk. This shows about 16 feet high worth or root system.

So will you get both?

I was thinking that the 11-16mm might be worth adding to my 12-24mm instead of just switching. Been thinking that the 11-16mm would be a nice addition for a lot of forest shots, which is my main interest.

Here's a 12-24mm shot I took south of Mt. Shasta along I-5 on the way back from San Diego. Our son just finished basic training at MCRD and had 10 days leave.

I tend to use the 11-16 for only certain types of shoots and video.
The 12-24 would come in handy more i think... It would not be so distorted as the 11-16 is on full frame..
I guess some love the distortion and some hate it.. I am shooting a series so these lenses would be a big addition to my bag

Vancouver? WA or Canada?

I've been looking at Portland Craigslist the past month and saw 11-16s but no 12-24s that I recall. And the 11-16s were Nikon I think.

Thought about selling my 12-24, but wondered if that would leave me buying an 11-16 plus something like a 20mm to replace it.

Even on a crop sensor T2i, the 12mm end is pretty amusing. I just took some shots of my son by a rock and trees, and the lens gave him hands like Kirk in the latest Star Trek movie after the reaction to the injection from McCoy.

:D

Nikon, but neither

It will look like any other 12mm lens on any other crop body, though....

The Sigma 12-24 is not quite as good as the Tokina 12-24 (even on a crop it has softer corners) and is a slower lens without constant max aperture, but it will work on both your bodies. That's a big advantage for you.

The Toki 11-16 works on an APS-H body (1D) - will the Tokina 12-24 also work on a 1D? I am moving from a 7D to a 1D mk 4 and selling a Tammy 17-50 and Toki 11-16 and this may be a solution if it fits. Anyone got any samples?

Great shots, eskimochaos!

Thanks Matt - I thought that was you, I was going to PM you regarding how happy I am with it! Considering I just started shooting 2 weeks ago and the relative plesant feedback on these images makes me feel great.

Here are a couple more but larger. Sorry if one is reposted - this lens is unbelievable!

You just answered a question I had earlier today about your pics. Because I have this lens too, and was curious about your settings.

I was thinking about getting the 11-16mm, which I likely with get eventually anyway. But am becoming inclined to keep my 12-24mm and purchase a Canon 24-105mm L instead.

Seems like a good combo, since the 12-24 is on my camera most often. Although usually daytime photos.

I know some of y'all use neutral density and graduated neutral density filters with this lens. What size? Anyone want to tell me how much cokin P size filters will vignette?

Just got this lens because of this wonderful thread. I'm just a casual shooter so an ultra-wide above $500 is not even an option:D. I bought this used. Here's the shot I took today to test the lens.

Recently acquired version 2 of this lens and I am quite happy with it. The below were taken with 60D and are all HDRs.

Does anyone use this as a walk-around lens? I feel like this would work very well for that because all I have are the kits lens and the nifty fifty, and the nifty's focal length seems so long.

you might have more luck with a 17-50 range lens as a walk around

12-24 can be wide for a walkaround, but it depends on what you're doing. I ended up using it quite a bit when I was in Norway last August -- I didn't use my 17-55 as much during that trip. In other trips, especially a winter sunrise trip to Zermatt, I needed IS (I didn't have a tripod) and so chose the tighter but steadier 17-55.

These both from the Tokina (click for larger):

I think this lens use as a walk-around depends on where you're walking around !
In these deep sandstone canyons, it works well. Here's one at 12mm.
