If you have this lens please post some pictures you took with it. If you're thinking of buying a wide angle lens, consider this one.

Below is a photo of what the lens looks like and the first shot I ever took with my Tokina 12-24 lens.

Snir, your lens is still amazing and its my most fun lens in my bag. I love it ! Yes the Canon and Sigma 10-20 are 2mm wide, but the Tokina is still a great lens for the money.

The 2mm difference I think goes into the build. I feel like I can throw this thing across the room and it wont break (not trying it). Just amazing.

i'm happy that you like it, its always nice to know that your gear is in good hands. honestly, i would have never sold it if i needed UWA. however, i find my 17-40L a little better fit for my needs but i do miss my Tokina when i take landscape shots :(

Ha, I replaced my 17-40L with the Tokina, and you replaced your Tokina with the 17-40L. For me, the 17-40L was too much overlap with my 24-70L, where as the Tokina fit in perfectly. I'll have to get some pic's up. My avatar was taken with the Tokina.

I am speaking my memory, but I remember to have read something about it is vigneting until 17 mm over a FF camera body. But the most iportant to know is that this lens is specially designed to work with APS-C sensor types (geometrical and optical speaking).

Just so you know, I got a dodgy copy first of all with repeated Err99 error and it would not function. That is the only problem I had with it. The replacement worked fine...

Depends of your camera body !! If you have FF or x1,3 crop camera -->> NOT , go for the Sigma due to vignetting issues.

The Tokina is specially design for APS-C sensor cameras, aka x1,6 crop factor bodies (300D, 350D, 20D, 30D). If you are in this bag, itīs up to you, but for the price & IQ I suggest you: RUN & GO FOR IT ...

I LOVE THIS LENS....just wish my 17-85 IS was as sharp, as distortion free and well built :( I would seriously consider the 16-50 2.8 when it arrives and sell the 17-85!

I would buy the Toki, not the Sigma, mainly as the wider end shows less distortion than the Sigma, and that is worth losing 2 mm - as you gain 4mm at the other end. Also the Sigma shows weird wavy distortions on straight lines, such as buildings and horizons!

Does anyone use this lens as their 'standard' zoom? Or is it too wide? If I was to only get one lens, would most of you get this still, or is it more fun to use in some, but not all situations?

Ie, if I could either get sigma 17-70 or this (as my only standard zoom lens), would this be impractical?

Some great pictures by the way

hmm... for use as a 'standard' zoom? hmm.. debateable. everyman to his own. I could quite happily spend a whole day walking around with this lens, but I am fan of 'wide' stuff...

...but i doubt it could be described as a 'standard zoom'.

perhaps you can describe it as an 'un.zoom', or 'reverse.zoom', as it zooms backwards/out : ) hehe...

I would not want a super wide as my walk around lens...I think the 17-70 is a much better choice. I compemented my Canon EF 28-135 with the Tokina 12-24...gives me 19.2 trhough 216MM with the 1.6 crop...a nice range for my shooting style.

sugest you go to a shop and try them out if they have any in stock... i have both of these lenses. i like both but i hardly use the 50mm anymore since i bought a 28mm 1.8 which suits my needs. everyone is different : ) do you have the 18-55mm kit lens? if you do, i suggest you set it to 50mm and spend the whole day with it on 50mm and see if you like the feel of this length. it will give you at least some sort of idea as to how it will work for you...

Does anyone use this lens as their 'standard' zoom? Or is it too wide? If I was to only get one lens, would most of you get this still, or is it more fun to use in some, but not all situations?

The question is more complicated than it seems.

I've used this lens as a general 'walkaround' lens in a number of situations, most memorably on a trip to Russia in which I was surrounded all day with stunning architectural wonders. In some other trips (see my Waimea Canyon picture above) it's been the one indispensible lens for landscape shots.

But I'm not sure you want to rely on this lens as your sole walkaround to the exclusion of a more standard zoom length (i.e. 17-50 or 24-70). The Tokina, for all its many merits, is not a good portrait lens -- 24mm is still on the wide side for portraits, and the wider you get the more perspective distortion you'll see near the edges of the frame (not a lens problem, it's just an optical given). So for your trip to the big city or to the mountains it's a great lens, but for your family get-together it's not the best lens for you.

This is why I'd advocate the combination of a superwide like the Tokina 12-24 along with a longer lens (I use the Tamron 28-75). If you want a single lens solution that is wide but still allows you to zoom in a bit and take nice portraits, the best focal length range for 1.6 crop cameras is roughly 17 to 50. The 24-70 and 28-75 (and 24-105 now) lenses out there are good, but they're designed more with full frame / 35mm in mind, and they sometimes leave you wanting on the wide end.

cjm
12th of May 2006 (Fri), 12:20
Yeah the zoom on this lens and other wide lense is not much, basically maybe enough to go past something unsightly like a garbage can or something you don't want in your picture. It comes in handy sometimes but all the times I have ever used this lens its usually at 12mm focal distance. How much is that compared to say 70mm? (the start of my 70-200mm f4 L)

Look and see.

I don't have a CPL on my 12-24. Too expensive :D so when shooting landscape with blue sky, I try to underexpose it a little and push local contrast and curves in PS to help bring out the blue. Since it's landscape, the fine details can be scacrified for the overall image.

interesting...just curious why you chose a high ISO to get a slower shutter speed? i take it you didn't have a tripod? if you did, would you choose the lowest possible ISO?

i was trying to take some full moon shots and used a makeshift tripod, but i probably should have adjusted the EC lower because all the moon's detail got blown out and it looks like a sun.

I didn't have a tripod with me so if I shoot at ISO 400 it would be like 1 sec hand hold :)

I leaned against the rail and braced myself on it for the 1/8 shutter.

ps-i do think its a bit too wide sometimes, and im always lookin gfor something in between the 2 lenses i have so ill be using the 12-24 for wide, the 50 1.8 for "in-between" stuff and the 90 when i need it!

Thanks aRJun...

Actually I don't travel as much as I used to...I live in Southern California and those shots were all taken relatively close to where i live. I am however about to hop on a plane...my birthday is Tuesday and my wife surprised me with a getaway weekend to Park City, Utah. She rented a 4 X $ with Nav and said go have fun with your camera gear on Saturday and Sunday...looks like I will be shooting some cold, winter landscapes :)

does this work on ff bodies?I have heard this lens works on a FF camera but it basically useless upto around 18mm or something because it distorts so badly. The pictures I have seen from UWA lens like this and the Sigma don't look too great because its sort of a squished fisheye look. So I would not recommend it on a FF camera. A Canon 17-40 L used can be had for about $100 bucks more then this lens is new and is well worth it on a FF camera.

It was a 2 day hike. The second day I switched to a Tamron 18-200 for the day to see how it would go. I didn't change lenses whilst actually hiking. I prefer the 12-24 in those conditions although the Tamron was good for an occasional portrait.
There was very little wildlife around as most of the hiking was above the tree line so I really didn't need the extra length of the Tamron.
Day 2 is here:

just got to know. why would you buy this lens if you have the 10-22 canon len? i had the 10-20 sigma and just traded it for the the tokina. do you think it might be sharper? i'd like to feel good about this trade i just made.LOL

cjm
3rd of March 2007 (Sat), 20:30
If you are talking to me, I had the Tokina lens first but sold it for the 17-40L because I thought I wanted more reach, then I bought a 24-70 L and got much more reach but the 24 and 17 wideness was pretty similar so I wanted another UWA lens again and made an offer on a Tokina, didn't go through and found a great deal on the ultimate UWA lens the Canon 10-22 efs lens. I guess if I knew I was buying a 24-70 L down the road I would have kept the Tokina lens. I do know I got rid of it far too early which I later regretted.

I personally believe the UWA go like this. Canon is #1. Tokina is tied in #2 with the Sigma 12-24 and the Sigma 10-20 is number #4. The Sigma 12-24 gets higher marks over the 10-20 because it can actually be used on pro bodies like the 1D series. The Tamron I have never used, tried of even looked at.

DrPablo

The light falloff is a function of the angle of view -- any wide angle with 99 degrees of coverage (as does the Toki 12-24 at 12) will have light falloff in the corners, because the farther away you go from the lens axis the less direct light contributes to corner illumination. Stopping down helps this a little bit, because among other things it evens the illumination across the image circle.

Just testing my new lens, and not the best photo. However, the lens is very sharp as far as I can tell.

Shutter 1/6, aperture f/4.0, flash off, ISO 400, 15mm, lighting: two room daylight fluorescent lights that have a sort of incandescent glow. No PP done, except for frame and name. No filter used, and no sharpening.

Nice shot,

Thanks.

Spring is finally "almost" here. We have had a very long and cold record winter. It's approximately 50 degrees F. near Fairbanks, the warmest so far. But it gets to around 20 degrees during the night after sundown. Don't have a filter on this lens, and noticed that the big glass in front easily gathers dust. Maybe I should have an UV filter, but decided to spend the money on a Hoya ultra-thin polarizer instead (should get it in a week or two). But the brush portion of LensPen works well enough to skip the clear filter.

I really like the AF/MF ring on the Tokina, but don't like the front cap. However, the hood can be reversed on the lens when not needed, which in turn reduces the likelihood of losing it.

Does the 5D has a FF sensor? If so, the Tokina may not be the best lens for it, since it's designed for cropped sensors.

The Tokina vignettes from about 18mm on, making UWA kinda moot since you can just get a 17-40L or similar. I had to sell mine and pick up the Sigma 12-24 for my 1D. Awaiting its arrival this week.

The first digital camera I used was a borrowed DR-XT with my 28-135. Had heard/read about the effect of the 1.6x crop factor on wide angles but it wasn’t until I tried to get an around the table shot with my back against the wall that actually I understood it.

Ordered a 30D with a 12-24 and have been a very happy camper with both of them.

I don't think it will do well at parties/discos that have low lighting illumination... It will probably have a hard time focusing, as this lens does, in low light situations...
