Does anyone know if Adult flies/hoverflies get bigger as adults or do they emerge full size?
Took these two pics of Dronefly hoverflies yesterday.
First one is what I would call a normal adult, the second one though was smaller and looks kind of babyish compared to the first.
I suspect they are borne full size and they are different sexes. Just noticed the gap between the eyes is different so they are different sexes.

I used to fish and in my box of maggots full sized greenbottles would emerge. Egg/larva/pupa/full sized adult = Endopterygote life cycle.
Shieldbugs on the other hand emerge as miniature adults from the egg stage then progress through nymph/instar to full sized adult by moulting = Exopterygote life cycle.

Thanks RM- thought that might be it. I suppose the different sizes you see in say bluebottles are either different sexes or indeed maybe a different species or may be you do get different sizes adults depending on how well the larva stage actually fed.

Well humans/Rottweillers vary greatly so no reason various species of fly shouldn't.

nah they aren't born full size, everything comes from an egg and maggot. Maybe top one just more mature, or one's female and one's male. stuff like that.
