I'm thinking of buying a 10D or a 300D.

On:
http://www.digitalreview.ca/cams/CanonRebelDvs10D.shtml

they compare the 10D and the 300D.

First I'll wait for the review on DPreview.

Anyone else having trouble with choosing one of them?

I have a 10D and I love it. I have a mate who is trying to decide but is leaning towords the 10D as well. I like the 300D but its a cut down version of the 10D and for me I wanted maximum flexibility with the camera.

Cheers
Jason

To decide you need to consider whether the features that the 300D misses out are important to you.

I wouldn't want to lose the 9 frame buffer, 4 is not enough for me.

The viewfinder is not as bright, I would have to use it to know if I would be OK with it or not.

I like the heavier more solid feel of the 10D, maybe you would prefer a lighter camera?

The 300D sounds a little inflexible for some situations.

The 300D certainly kicks ass on price though.

I believe that the decision of buying either the 10D or 300D is mainly based on the price, as the difference between the 2 cameras are probably not significant enough to the potential buyers.

Canon does a very good marketing job by introducing the 10D first at a significant reduced price (from D60) to get a lot of users to cross the line from the P&S world. After Canon captured a lot of new users (10D), Canon put out another DSLR at much reduced price with slightly less features to get whoever are still waiting for the DSLR to fall below certain price point.

It will be interesting to know how many current 10D owners would have been 300D owners instead, if Canon introduced both cameras at the same time.

If you do not consider the differences between the 10D and 300D to be great then definitely get the 300D. Personally, I think the differences between the two are HUGE and would not touch the 300D, except for maybe a less expensive backup, but then I already have a D60 as a backup, so I highly doubt you'll ever see a 300D in my bag.

The 300D will have its own market-base and is at an awesome price-point which will push folks looking at high-end point-and-shooters into the world of dSLR. I think it's a great move by Canon, but they need to update the 1D before those folks blow an artery. ;)

If your only going to use the camera on holidays and special events then go with the 300 but beware most likely it will have a low trase in value and very little room to be creative. Now if you carry your camera more than once a week and plan on being serious about photography then the 10D is the only way to go. Spend $$$$$$$$$$$ once and be happy for years to come instead of regrets. I love my 10D has had it over a week and has not had any problems.

I don't think you need to wait for a review. The quality should be very similar to the 10D. The thing to look at is the difference of features you will be missing on the 300D. If you can live without all the feature differences then get the 300D. As all or most of us current 10D owners would probably tell you is we'll stick happily with our 10D's thank you very much :).

Thank you all for your reaction. I think you convinced me of buying the 10D.
Only one problem...the money. Can I give my bankaccountnumber? Or somebody that want's to buy a great G2 for € 2000,- ? :D

After study the specs from canon.co.jp, the main differences are :

300D has
1) NO Flash exposure compensation, that means you can't adjust the output level of the built-in flash
2) NO PC terminal, so
3) Can't update the firmare by user
4) NO custom functions

Of cos, there are some slightly differences.
300D has titanium-like plastic body layout vs 10D metallic body
300D has 2.5 fps vs 10D 3 fps
300D has max 4 shoots on continuing shooting vs 10D has 9 shots.
300D has battery life of 600 shots (no flash) & 400 shots (50% flash

use) vs 10D has 650 shots / 500 shots.

Hope these information is useful to all EOS users or future EOS users.

Don't forget, the 300D has an iso range of 100-1600 whereas the 10D has an iso range of 100-3200. The 300D is quite lighter as well which may be good/bad.. depending on how you look at it.

300D is a nice camera if you're a beginner and want to check out DSLR's.. The EF-S lens looks interesting too (its closer the the CCD)

Canon is not so stupid that they will introduce a camera that will undercut the sales of a model as successful as the 10D has been. There will be differences that matter.

On a recent visit to San Jose Camera, I asked one of the salespeople what he thought about the Digital Rebel (300D), and he was very unimpressed. He gave several reasons that he felt the 10D was a superior camera, but his two main points were:

1. Overall feel and quality of construction
2. Lack of rechargable battery in the Rebel.

If the second point is accurate, then the price of batteries (almost $20) could be a factor over the life of the camera.

I don't know if this is true or not, but if it is, that would be a deal-killer for me.

The 300D uses the BP-511 battery common to all the G-series and the D30/60 and 10D cameras. No worries in that department. The flash compensation, and AF mode controls present serious limitations for me, however.

Belmondo,

as anybody remotely interested now has had about a week time to study the characteristics of the 300D (including the fact that they use the same batteries as any other Canon digicam :)), this doesn' exactly make the guys at San Jose Camera appear as experts...

Just my 2 (Euro)cents,
Andy

Guess I'm not remotely interested. Sorry about the bad information---usually the guys at San Jose Camera are pretty reliable.

Maybe that's why I moved to Southern California.

Obviously you read my posting, so you know I said I didn't know if it was true or not. Nonetheless, I should have checked it out before I opened my mouth (or in this case, flexed my fingers).

Mea culpa

Can I plead temporary insanity?
