Well, scary day for me and my 10D today, we are going to an indoor rock concert together :)
It will be loud, hot, incredibly busy and I plan on shooting the band from the crowd.
I must be nuts!
Wish us luck! :D

Good luck to you and your 10D. If you get nervous just sing the words 'me and my 10D' to the tune 'me and my shadow'.;)

Good luck, mate! I got this shot last week at Bunker Hill, Notts:

Now, that was a crazy gig! :)
I think gig photography is what I most enjoy at the moment. It's so unpredictable, in terms of lighting, movement, framing, access etc. Challenging but enormous fun!

I was thinking more along the lines of "Me and my RC" for the tune...
".what's good enough for other folks,. ain't good enough for me,....."

Thanks for the well wishes everyone :)
We survived, just :)
It was a difficult gig to photograph. All the house lights were down, the stage lights were minimal, so I did what I could.
Link below to the gallery. Some of the images I though would be for the bin came out well once desaturated :)

Enjoy

Jyoti, is that Notts England? Good shot :)

Ooh, nice pics! I haven't been to well-lit gig in ages! I envy you..
Yep, the above pic was from Nottingham, England. The Bunker Hill pub, just down in Hockley. I've started doing colour gig photos recently, going for an over-saturated look mostly. Before, I'd convert everything to b&w and squash the dynamic range, which gives more conventional rock'n'roll photos like this:
http://www.bzangygroink.co.uk/Galleries/HFT_26_6_2003/image/killyourself_hft_09.jpg
I'm torn between the two. I love the warmth and involvement of colour but for gig photos, b&w always seems to have more drama and is more in-your-face.

It was a great gig too, the band just *know* how to perform live and play great music - no doubt you'll know the venue well - Rock City :) :D
Hopefully going to photograph more bands in the future. The Darkness is next on my list :)
Thank is a really nice looking photo, I am going to try that with a few of mine, but the original images just don't have the clarity to do the style justice.
Oh for a 135mm 2.8 lens, that extra stop would have helped the camera shake :)

Ahh, yep! Never taken any photos there, mind.

Heh...they should be good for plenty of rock antics. Scissorkicks, monitor-straddling, gurning solos.

Cheers! The look I was going for was classic hardcore punk photography, like this great one of Minor Threat:

(Sadly, I don't know who took that shot)
As you can see, these kind of shots are often very noisy/grainy but I love the raw, immersive quality they have. I've got close to that with this shot I took:
http://www.bzangygroink.co.uk/Galleries/HFT_26_6_2003/image/killyourself_hft_17.jpg
The good thing about small gigs is that I'm able to get right up to the band. But I always make sure I ask each band's permission before I start snapping. Most performers love being photographed but I have had a couple of mardy buggers. Don't really want my 10D knocked out of my hands!

For the b&w shots, I used my Canon 28-135IS. Lately, I've been using my Sigma 17-35 and I'm enjoying the width for close work (the first colour shot was taken with the Sigma). All the shots were with my 550EX which I love using, apart from it rips through batteries! Good thing I use rechargeables :)

Here is a modified shot from the gig, looking little more like I intended.

My problem is I don't want to use a flash, so I need teh fastest lens I can get :)
Another good shot there, very nice :)

I prefer the modified shot but of course that's just my personal taste - maybe others would prefer the original. I just think with the conversion to b&w, it adds a little sparkle and makes the pic seem more...live?
I like the angle you've got there - I know how difficult it can be when you haven't got on/near-stage access. But some great shots can still be done, like this one of the Dead Kennedys:

(Again, there's no photocredit for this shot :( )
I also think your website is lovely - there's some beautiful shots there! I showed my mrs. the one with the otter being held and she was cooing for ages :)

IT certainly has added a bit more to the image. I showed a few of my collegues the pics today, and in every case the adjusted b+w was favourite. It just has more of a rock feel to it.
Thanks for your comments on my site. If you want a little story about the otter have a look back at the pic on the site now :)
wait for a while, I broke my gallery :(
