Great forum, have been reading hundreds of messages here for a few days and this is my first jump into the discussion. Great information here.

A little background I suppose.. I am a new convert to the digitla SLR. I've been using an Elan II e with a tamron 28-200 LD.

Well, the Tamron lens on the 10d isn't really doing it for me. I have ordered an L glass 100-400 for sports shots, etc, but I am looking for a workhorse lens for everyday 'keep ready for that NOW shot' use... the Tamron isn't bad, but I think the results could be better.

After reading tons of high praise here for the canon 28-135 IS USM lens, I had almost decided to grab that one but here is a strange thing I've come across... it's a comparison between the 28-105 and the 28-135 and neither seem to give very crisp performance on a D30 (camera used for his comparison).. In fact the pics in the review seems to be less crisp than the Tamron, which is hard to believe.

Anyway, here is the link with the comparison shots...

Did this guy just have a bad set of canon lenses?

Thanks,
David

I beg to disagree, Canon 28-135 really is a good work horse on a 10D. The pictures are sharp and the lens is really non that much bulky.

Scientific tests require a lot more man-power. Does one swallow make a summer? I do not see anything scientific in that person's test. There is no mention of distance, for instance. Was the newspaper fluttering at the time of test due to air movement? Was it completely flush with the wall? etc.

28-200 is almost an 8X zoom, 28-105 is almost 4X, and 28-130 about 4.5X. In general, 4X should give sharper images than 8X zoom. Because we generally throw away worse shots, perhaps one should compare the sharpest images in the mid range of these zooms.

I've owned both the 28-105 USM and 28-135 IS USM. Both are sharp and well built lenses.

The only reason I sold the 28-105 was to but the 28-135.

The 28-135 and 50 f/1.8 II are, IMO, two of the best deals you can get from Canon. You can buy better glass from them but you'd better be willing to pony up a lot more cash.

FWIW, I just received a Sigma 24-70 f/3.5-5.6 HF this last week to have more wide-angle, and a lighter more compact lens. I'm pleasantly surprised at how well it compares to 28-135. Better at 28mm, a tad less sharp at 50 and 70. Well built. Includes hood. And it only costs $100! It's a keeper.

Good Luck
