View Full Version : I *knew* I shouldn't have let them take it...

Well, brand new $900 dollar camera, I let the wife and 2 year old take it on vacation to Gramma's house. First phone call back, the camera has been dropped (bumped off a table) 2 feet down onto a hard tile floor.
*grrrrr*
Wife hasn't had chance to download any photos from the camera, but says that it still takes photos, and they look good on the LCD (again, not a good test for calibration/etc.)
I need advice on what to do. It seems functional, and in good operating condition, but I'm worried that it could be knocked out of alignment, or that it will take slightly out of focus pictures from here to eternity...
Any hints/clues on what I could do?
Thanks in advance,
ng2

Ng2,
I don't know about you, but I can tell you how it would go around my house.
First I would hope, pray, and wish that when it gets home that it works just fine. :)
Second, I would like it to have a scratch, scar or dent that could not be taken out. :p
This would allow me to continue to make great G2 photos and assure me the ablity to get some more toys as well. :D
Win, Win.
Hope this turns out to be a great new years for you.

I don't follow your logic! Why a perma-ding?

i follow the logic! the very first car i bought with my own money was an sparkly new acura integra in '88. i was so picky about it that i insisted on waiting for one that just got off the truck and that no one else had driven before! well, i took delivery on it on a saturday night and drove it to church the next morning only to have one of the little old ladies back into it, leaving a nice 1-inch crease in the corner of my rear bumper. i never bothered having the bumper replaced...instead, it served as a constant reminder that *people are more important than things*.
i think what eric is telling you is that, now that you got the "newness"-thing out of the way, you can really start enjoying your G2 without the constant worry about keeping it perfect. make sense? and, as eric also pointed out, your wife will feel so bad that she'll be COMPELLED to let you shell out another $200 for a canon 420ex flash or some other goodies! ;-)

Interesting. Well, here's hoping no optical/electronic damage is done, then!
The 420EX will have to wait for my birthday. Until then, I suffer with this Sunpak 266D that strangely works in TTL mode with every *other* camera on the market EXCEPT the Canon.
Thanks for the replies!
Oh, here are some photos we've taken so far:

Way back in 1978 I restored a Ford 1966 Pick up truck, everything from the ground up. Painted and looking fine I took it to the grocery store. This was the first trip out Well believe that a "Little old lady" with the shopping cart left the cart in her parking spot and pulled away. There was also a slight hill and breeze. The cart began to move and you can guess were it ended up. In the side of my door. The paint was still soft and you can also guess the range of emotion and blue air, but the truck still ran OK. If the camera still works OK don't worry about it. My Canon F1 is missing most of it's black paint and it still works fine. I have found that scratches and dent add character and sometimes can be great for conversation. Good Luck! I hope that everything works out fine.

I tend to worry when it comes to precision optics and electronics. The G2 isn't a very sturdy feeling camera (unlike the Sony DSC-85, for example which feels like it could handle a drop down a ravine...), but I very much love the work it does.
Thanks for all your input.
*Update* Wife went out and bought a large, well padded camera bag where it will be just as convenient to lay the camera in when she is not using it, that velcro's shut quickly. So I think this may be the last horror story we'll hear (at least about dropping it.).
Perhaps the next tragedy will be when I drop it in the ocean. 8-O
