After a few minutes of internet browsing I think the answer has something to do with the reduced size of the CMOS sensor (in comparision to 35mm) and a smaller mirror of the Digital Rebel. Is this correct? If so, doesn't the 10D share the same sensor?

The 18-55 sticks further inside the body of the camera. that´s why it can´t be used with the 10D or any other Eos camera. The mirror of the 300D is specially constructed to swing back, and so avoids hitting the back of the lens.
