hello, I am looking to buy a Canon PS S50, I am wanting to know if all the same software for the PC is also available for the Mac when you buy the camera, I am especially interested in using the stitch assist for Panoramic pictures.

thanks
Jim

Hey Jimbus!

I use my G2 and new S50 with my iMac with no problems at all, using the Canon furnished software. And PhotoShop Elements 2 is a real dream!

The only confusing thing you will encounter is the frequent references about 3rd party programs such as BreezeBrowser, which is only available for PC's. However, I get around that by using iView Media Pro, which is fantastic!! In other words, with my Mac, I can do anything that the PC,s can do, I just may have to go about it a little differently.

By the way, after several thousand shots run thru my G2, which I truly love, I bought an S50 before taking a long tour thru the 4 Corners area, because of its smaller pocket size and greater carrying convenience, and I haven't taken the lens cover off of the G2 since!! This opinion after almost 1000 shots.

For traveling and general point & shoot it is magnificent! The S50 focusing mechanism is FAR superior to the G2, and the extra meg of size REALLY makes a difference. The S50's now with me all the time and the G2 will only make an appearance when its hot shoe off camera flash capability or accessory lenses and filters are required.

And by the way, I've used the Canon stitching program to make some excellent Panoramas with the Mac....stitching up to 8 individual shots!

Good luck!

Don

thank you so much for your concise reply, it has helped me a lot, this is my first foray into digital cameras having come from a film camera background, I own a minolta dynax SLR and also some compact 35mm's including a Minox 35GT and Rollei 35, so compact and quality are important for me.

Yes I have trowled around and looked at all the different models, but now that the S50 is available in black and also as a 1GB micro drive I think I am finally tempted, and to also have the panoramic function is a brilliant bonus.

also on some reviews people say that it suffers from a lot of red eye when using flash, is this true?, and also how is it with blue fringing?

Jim........

First off, in my opinion I'd stay away from the micro drive. One, it's a tender little creature and two, it's a real battery hog! And battery life is an excellent feature of the S50. I regularly fill up a 256 chip with 90 of the largest jpegs on one battery! The micro was great when the biggest chip was 32 meg, but now you can buy a 512 or even a 1 gig chip, which makes the drive less necessary.

I have less of a red-eye problem with the s50 than my G2, but I never really worry about it, because it's so easy to fix in Elements. No trace of blue fringe in 900 some odd shots. In fact, the only time I've seen it with either camera was when I really had to do some serious over sharpening on some fuzzy/foggy shots.

If you want to see what the S50 will do (in the hands of a confirmed doofus) you can take a look at my galleries at:

All shots except the newborn were taken with the S50. Some of those baby shots would have been almost impossible with the G2 because of its focusing difficulties on soft subjects. You will also see several panoramas in the Southwest gallery.
