View Full Version : POTN WORLWIDE PHOTO DAY PART 7 April 22-24--DISCARDED

So here we are again.. thanks for the theme Condyk... remember folks, this can be anything just as long as it fits in with the word Discarded..
I should probably re-post the rules it's been awhile since i've done so... really simple. You have from sun-up on Saturday until sun-down on Sunday.. post photos by the end of monday. the forum limit is two so that's our limit... no extreme postprocessing but y'all use your own judgement..... and have fun..:D and for anybody finding this thread for the first time here are a few links as to what got this idea started..

How about a blue painted tree to emphasise that a dead tree is not discarded.
Snapped this at the Mount Anan Botannical Gardens of outer Sydney - painted blue to emphasise that animals use the dead tree for shelter by hollowing out branches etc.

It's certainly a shocker, Paul, surprised me! Amazing blue.

Blue tree is a great idea ... almost recycling without doing anything.

Here is my silly entry. I have an awesome graveyard near me and I like to wander and spot stuff. Today I got a few that I could add here but this one will do as it's one of the more subtle ones. I am playing around doing B&W's at the moment :D

wow condyk.. somehow the beer can makes it. Leaves you with a feeling that the graveyard has been left on it's own and people no longer consider it anymore... definately fits with the theme....

Thanks ... my regular routine is to shoot Saturday AM and every second or third week also get a haircut. My barber is a good lad and we have a chin wag. One of my ideas was to shoot him brushing hair that had fallen on the floor, but he had other customers today so busy.

We chatted about the shots in the graveyard tho' and the theme. There are people living in the graveyard, i.e. homeless, and so the bins get filled with all sorts of stuff (much of it secured neatly in plastic bags before being dumped), and there is food and drink rubbish scattered around on the floor.

So, the theme kinda gets multi-layered in there: dead folks who are gone and forgotten, graves fallen over and abandoned, living folks who are discarded by their communities and hang out there, then the stuff actually thrown away by them and by people passing through.

Finally get to play, I'm going to do two different posts because Curtis N is asleep and I can't remember all the steps to load links to pictures we put on our web site.

Thank you Barbara and Sari, not to worry the camera has been rescued and the beer can is in the recycle container. All coffee grounds were pushed to the bottom of the garbage below the take home container from yesterday's lunch. Our garbage isn't normally very clean.

Discard. This was a hard one. I just went to the bathroom and thought AH HA! I'm discarding!

Very little PP, just 'auto-levels.' I delibertly underexposed by about 1 and 1/3 stop.

Oh.. high contrast and the black and white. Cool, it's very 'gothic' looking and I like it. It certainly presents a mood. Not a cheerful upbeat mood, but a mood. :D

Yeah, the macro.. fortuntately I'm too broke for a macro lens - fortunately for you I mean. Unfortunately for me.

It's nice to be on a forum less densely american... "loo shot." No american says such stuff. Us crass americans would say, "I like your crapper shot."

Some excellent pics so far.

I went to the Australian Frisbee 'championships' this afternoon and, while shooting, met the pro who was covering the event. Lovely guy. He hadn't heard of POTN but was fascinated when I told him about it and about our weekly 'challenge'. He thought it was a brilliant idea for people to actually get motivated and do something specific. He really liked the international aspect to it, too.

So I got a heap of frisbee pics - and I am not showing the out of focus discards...

Speaking of which...

Yesterday I was at the edge of Sydney Harbour - and, there, in the water, upside down, was one of the largest teddy bears you have ever seen - obviously discarded. Whether accidently or not is immaterial.

So I took a few shots - as you do.

Alas, I had 'forgotten' the little distance switch on the 70-200mm was set to the shorter setting. More OOF pictures.

While the intent was honourable, the reality was disappointing. I have nothing to offer for my second shot.

I did have, however, a lovely time walking around, chatting to other photographers, getting some exercise and fresh air - I am lucky to have been able to do that.

After driving around all morning in the rain trying to find something that said "Discarded" to me, I gave up. As I was driving into my apartment complex I noticed something yellow sticking out of the dumpster. I did pull his head up so that you could see what it was. The neighbors probably think I'm nuts! Not a great technical shot, but the best I could do given the circumstances.

Yesterday it rained all day, so I didn't look for discarded things. When I woke this morning, the rain had stopped, but the skies were still a drab grey. I thought that was good because I wouldn't have to worry about how to expose in strong sunlight (ever a mystery to me). So I went out ... and out ... and out. Had a terrible time finding anything worth shooting. Then, like BeccaNH, I found a dumpster. I snapped a desparation shot. Then, on the way home I stopped at a fairground where I found the second shot. After I was home for an hour or so, the sun came out. Now we're having blue skies and sunshine!

Allrighty folks.. and as per my usual I have a story to tell... I had taken some portraits at this abandoned farm... I was convinced it was on Kuna Rd... Up and down the dang road I went... couldn't find it. So, while driving home I saw some old farm equipment lying in a field next to a house... So, pull to the side of the road.. while walking closer I came upon somebody's yard that was filled with the most incredible junk.... I got a little bit tunnel visioned and didn't even hear the lady in her bathrobe yelling at me and asking what I was doing.... I explained and chimped a few pictures for her... and then she pointed out his seventy-five year old outhouse that she 'rescued' when the Nampa feedlot went out of business.... took a picture of it. Mostly to make her happy... so, here's my shots. I think there worth the very slight trespassing law I broke in order to accomplish them....

1. I looked at what I was stepping on..

2. Her outhouse.. She was very proud of this artifact, Kind of got the impression that I was getting a history lesson... LOL..

Later I took a walk downtown by an old building that they are trying to tear down and make into a parking lot...local preservation activists have even given up hope on saving it:

I finally got to download my shots and do a little PP to post here and I thought I would start with a story about how I arrived with the shots for this week.

Some of you may recall that I had to go out of town this weekend for a fairly lengthy test. The trip is about 3 hours through some fairly scenic areas. While driving I was talking to my wife about this weeks' theme and she was trying to help me with some ideas. We were thinking of stopping somewhere on the way home Sunday if we found something. I told her that I would like to find some abandoned cars somewhere, perhaps a junkyard. She thought that would be a good idea and within about 5 minutes she raises her left hand and says "There you go." and voilą on the left hand side of the road was a junkyard. It appeared to be fenced in and we weren't sure if we could get in. A few miles down the road there was an old service station with a bunch of "junk" laying around. It would work but she said "You might get shot." and we continued. Not 2 miles up the road there was a clearing to the left and in the middle of the field was a car, just sitting in front of an old weathered tree, like it was placed for just this occasion. We marked the area in our heads and planned our stop for the ride home. When we arrived I parked the car and took a stroll out to where the car was "discarded" in the field and took some shots. There were some houses behind the area and some power lines so my vantage points were limited. Here are 2 that I liked.

For those of us not travelling this is tricky, so I think some theme that could encompass the ideas around travel but allow others to participate would be nice. So that is one possibility if someone can come up with something. Travel for me is about adventure, something new, a change from the regular routine, learning, opening my eyes, meeting very different cultures, experiencing difference, etc.

How about 'something new', perhaps defined by, eg. travelling somewhere different, a new experience, arrival of a parcel, looking anew at something, etc ...

When i saw "travel" I originally thought the same thing, but it could be so vague. Travel could be a bike, car, train, plane, an actual trip someone (Tommy) is taking, and the list goes on.

On the other hand, 'something new' sounds good too.:-P

Ok lads and ladies, instead of something new ... how about somewhere new? It allows for jouneys near and far and even for a change in our normal habits in shooting or life ;-) It would include anything that takes us as photographers somewhere new.

So.. I jokingly told Don that I was gonna let Dave have his way again this weekend... but between Dave and Tommy I have compositions swimming in my head and a whole day off.... (unfortunately I promised to make cheesecakes..:( ).. so, let's incorporate both men's ideas..

So for this week no distance limits. shoot as far away or as close to home as you can get.

Let's think travel, linear perspectives, new experiences or even new compositions that you haven't attempted before... as long as it's outside of your normal realm...

If anybody else has anything extra to add would love to hear it...

eenorton
26th of April 2006 (Wed), 13:29
Yeah Mike, I'm a little confused too... but here's my take of "something new." It could be shooting at a location you've never shot at before. It could be shooting a subject you've never shot before. It could be using a photographic technique you've never tried before.... Am I on the right track?

saravrose
26th of April 2006 (Wed), 13:30
the idea is to shoot things that has to do with travel. But, any kind of travel. so you can go and shoot a plane... or shoot something that you haven't done before.... and therefore a new adventure and experience for you, which is in it's own way traveling... So, since Tommy is going to Praque anything he does there fits within the guidelines since the whole city is brand new for him... Dave can go and take a picture outside of the jewlery district since for him that's traveling.. or he can stay in his neighborhood and take a shot that he's never attempted before..... As for me, i'm kind of leaning towards the train yard, or any of those winding roads that shows distance and therefore going to a new place..... it's all in the eyes of the photographer.. nothing will be wrong.. As long as it relates to either a distance gone through or a new place, or a brand new composition that you haven't attempted.. Heck. I could go outside and take a picture of my cousin's motorcycle because I have never done it before and would fit within the guidelines....But these are just my thoughts.. somebody give a better answer if you don't like mine....

Great description. I love it.

So, somewhere new ... but think lateral unless you're really travelling somewhere. Go somewhere new with your photography: the bird shooter tries Macro, the urban shooter tries glamour, or whatever tickles you. The journey can be from the familiar to the unfamiliar. Think as big or small as you like. This one will be a challenge!! Enjoy the trip ;-)

Sari,
That makes more sense now, thanks.

EDIT: argh, now Dave says somewhere new, not travel.

We're all saying the same thing ... but travel fits inside so just do travel if you like.

My favorite part about all of this is the talks, debates and discussions before we post and then being able to see all of our own takes on a similar theme.. we all have our own personalities and senses of what works as a photo.. but the interpretations are really interesting and really does help...

Well I'm new to all of this, but how about being more specific; say a "mode of travel". As Sari said, it could be plane, train, automobile, bike, rocket, billy cart, horse or nike shoes. Hmmm, maybe that's still not specific enough.

What about...Something With Wheels?

Or even just....WHEELS?

I like the idea of going "somewhere new", whether it's geographically or photographically. I think a lot of things could fit this theme and it would be interesting to hear about "where" people went to get their shots.

I'm actually going somewhere geographically new, but I'm already thinking of new kinds of photography I could try. Can't wait to start shooting!

It doesn't need to be that specific.

I think "Something new" & "Somewhere new" is pretty wide. But "Somwthing with wheels" would narrow it down a lot.

Somewhere new sounds good to me, travel'ss bit dull as a theme. Done to death

Okay...somewhere new sounds okay. I've lived in Brisbane 49 years and seen most of it, so finding somewhere new will involve a fair bit of looking. Might have to go down to our "red light" district and photograph the hookers:-D

Does aluminum tape over cracker jack prizes count as "bling"?

Hmmm. That might be a bit upmarket. Just wear the aluminum tape.
