Let me just say I'm big into sharpness so I have always boosted up sharpness settings in cam while shooting jpegs. Well today I was messing with Contrast settings in picture styles and was very happy to see the difference in shots. More color and less harshness in shadows. To all who haven't played with this yet I strongly recommend trying this. Yes, I know I can do this in PS but I'm trying to minimize PS in daily situations.

The 1DMkIIN has the "new" styles...I get very sharp jpgs out of it.

I shoot 99.99% RAW but shooting the various styles do not seem to make that much difference, so I turned the sharpness, contrast, and saturation all the way up and that seemed to make a visible difference. I'm really not sold on the picture styles, but I really don't care either way b/c I shoot RAW.

I think if you shoot JPEG, I'd rather change the setting manually rather than going with a specific picture style.

According to the Cannon rep the mk2N (i'm guessing same pic styles/sharpening as the 30D) has the ability to have even more in camera sharpening than the 20D does. From using my N and the settings I use I'm guessing that if you turned it all the way up you would not need any USM in photoshop. Using the "Standard" pic style +1 shapening I am amazed how much I had to turn down my USM in photoshop. And I still could go another +2 on sharpening. But I still like to sharpen in PS because each image is different.

As far as the pic styles in general.......I hate them. Just to much of everything. I work off of the standard pic stlye, and adjust it.

Anything but people....Standard +1 Sharpness.
People, or studio....Standard -1 contrast & sat.

If you shoot RAW, picture styles are useless. They're only applied to a RAW file if assigned one in DPP (and DPP only). If you shoot JPEG, that's when they affect your actual captured image.

Now, I don't know if it affects the image as seen on the LCD (even when shooting RAW) but I believe it does.

They're great if you just want to shoot JPEGs that require little to no PP. Right out of the camera - sharpened, saturated, etc.

The 5D has picture styles, too.

I leave my picture styles at Standard and adjust them in raw. But I do like the effect of landscape, very vivid greens ans blues

Share your settings ... Where did you end up?

I'm User Def 1 -> Standard -> +1/3 Contrast -> +1 Sharpening

I also shoot RAW and actually find picture styles very useful. They really cut down on my pp time, because the image is already prepared for conversion - no adjustments necessary.

I guess it all comes down to if you like the outcome or not. I am personally a fan and use them extensively. I often extract the embedded preview jpeg, for web publishing and emails, for impatient friends and family members, who doesn't seem to appreciate the necessity of waiting a day or two on PP...:)

I'm User Def 1 -> Standard -> +1/3 Contrast -> +1 SharpeningThis is where I am happy, I only adjust sharpness...+6 and contrast..-2. (keep in mind when I say -2, I mean -2 lines from neutral, Call it what you will) Saturation defintely doesn't need to be changed unless ofcourse your shooting alot of reds, Than I would think of turning it down because we all know how reds bloom with the CMOS sensor. But all I did was adjust the standard to the above settings and use that almost exclusively. I did adjust the Nostalgic, clear and the other I forgot, I upped the sharpness to +6 on those also. It all depends on what finished result you want, but for me, these are it.
